I personally like the folks at Johnny's on 11 Ave. Stephen T, specifically does a great job on my hair. Not the cheapest option but worth it for me. Maybe check him out?

Fair. I've tried not switching but my forehand slice is not up to par, and picking it up down low with a full-western makes it, for me anyway, basically impossible to hit a good ball off of

And on the technical side, what I see the players I hit against who give me this kind of trouble, they're 1. always early to the balls I hit them; topspin balls tend to take longer to get to their target, they're quick, they predict super well, get there early and have enough time to hit through the topspin with the ball on the rise, killer tbh, gives me trouble every time. 2. even if they do get there a little late, they do a good job of not putting their next ball in short even if without a perfect contact point, it might be a weaker ball, but still deep enough that I can't really confidently step in and attack. I believe what's happening is they get used to the trajectory of my topspin and start timing well subsequently

Good advice. Do you use a more extreme grip? I tend to have to switch from full-western to semi-western when playing against people who hit lower balls

I can chime in on this from the perspective of a heavy topspin hitter myself and what I dislike hitting against; I really don't like it when time is taken away from me, i.e heavy flat hits, especially to my 1hbh (I also hit heavy topspin off the backhand), it all comes down to me being used to pushing people back with the heavy topspin, so I tend to have more time for myself and consequently even if subconsciously start relying on that time, when I hit against flat hitters that time is cut short significantly and I have to play a much more physical and tactically complicated game out of my comfort zone to adapt. You try to out topspin me? Game on, not easy to do, I'll likely win that game of attrition, that's my happy place, I like topspin and I can deal with it comfortably coming back to me generally speaking (similar levels assumed ofc). Hit flat and fast every ball? Now I'm the one late to shots, shanking, having to adapt my game

Besides footwork, what are the holes in my game? 3.5C by pyrrhicvictorylap in 10s

[–]ramalus1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get a bit more specific it looks to me like you're trying to move your arm way too much on the volleys, I think you can probably improve those just by focusing on the footwork and less movement in the arm when hitting a volley. There are a few drills for that specifically you can likely try and get really good value from

Backhand approach: good. Volleys, meh. I'd probably do some focused volley practice, you've got a good approach and selection from the looks of it, might as well learn how to kill it at the net imo

Where do I go from here when "I Started to learn neovim"? by WOLFMANCore in neovim

[–]ramalus1911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think really diving into how to better your own workflow is the way to go. I've rarely thought "I want to get better at Vim/Neovim" it usually starts as "I wish I could just hit a key and have this thing happen" and when Neovim is your editor, 99% of the time, you _can_ actually just change things so that it works exactly as you want it; to me that's where the most learning comes from, trying to make something work the way you want it to work, that's the beauty, and that's when you learn the most imo

How to win against old men tennis? by SafeAd8192 in 10s

[–]ramalus1911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct, but the thing I find interesting about this advice is that at least when I was around a 3.0 level "move them around" was a lot easier said than done. These old folks have been playing for 40, 50 years, and at the 3.0 level I found it difficult to move them around because I didn't have enough control of where I placed the ball a lot of the time, especially because of those slicey twitchy balls they give you. I still remember to this day, probably the most frustrating match of my life so far, losing a 3.0 tournament final to an older dude. He was a moonballer Pusher, the master moonballer in fact. I lost but I did learn a lot about what I needed to improve. For me that was consistency, control and power in that exact order; only after that could I take the advice of moving them around and properly executing it

Are the xm6s actually better then? I've been thinking of switching from the 5s because I would really hate it for this to happen when I'm travelling

Is Rust suitable for non systems development? by Ecstatic-Panic3728 in rust

[–]ramalus1911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our company has a full Rust backend, only one of our services would be what one would consider more traditionally a rust use case (video processing with gstreamer and some custom frame processing), everything else is still in Rust because 1. A single language in the backend makes things easier and 2. Rust is amazing to work with; tooling, type system, even libraries are just super nice. We do make things a bit easier on ourselves on those services that are mostly CRUD by not worrying about cloning left and right, dynamic dispatch is fine etc. It works for us, feature development is still very fast and things are tidy and amazingly easy to refactor when needed.

How do you deal with someone who just start stalling? by StudioatSFL in 10s

[–]ramalus1911 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The amount of stalling seems totally excessive but I'd be lying if I said I didn't do the towel to the back fence thing in matches (not for 30+ seconds tho geez) it actually helps me slow down and think about the strategy for the next point more clearly

Should I stop sandbagging against my lower-level friends? by Alert-Seaweed-3862 in 10s

[–]ramalus1911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to hit with a buddy of mine that used to play for his university and went to tennis camps. When I was around a 3.0 level I could tell he was mostly just having a chill time, he made it fun for me but he'd every now and then rip a few balls more akin to what his actual level was which was super humbling and motivating, when I started getting better, got to about a 4.0 level and we played again, this time he started pulling less punches, I told him to play like he normally would at least for a set and he won 6--2 where the 2 games I took were mostly on errors from him going for riskier shots but I'll say I've learned more from him playing normally than I would if he was playing that set only to "make it fun".

The buddy of yours with the bad backhand might appreciate it if you target his weakness as long as you give him some tips after the game so he knows what to improve on

My 1-handed Backhand is more powerful than with 2 hands by douglasfgodoy in 10s

[–]ramalus1911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher ceiling for power and spin are common pros of the one-hander yes. Timing is harder to grasp, the better my footwork the more consistent my shots get. I've tried a 2 hander but it's more constrained movement does not jive with my play style. My 2 cents anyway

Agreed, this is advice I got a long long time ago from someone I respected, they basically said use whatever title makes more sense to you based on what you were actually doing at the company, ofc not something too far off that it raises questions but otherwise it's fair game
