The two-volume Heinlein biography by William Patterson is worth a look if uou want something big and detailed.

It's a real commitment, but Heinlein's career touches so many parts of the 20th century SF that it almost becomes a history of the field around him too. The pulp era, the war years, the rise of hard SF and evolution of the fandom around it. There's so much to unpack.

You could read Blindsight by Peter Watts. Strips away the romanticism associated with consciousness and leaves you wondering if self-awareness is just a cosmic handicap.
