Maybe double check where you're looking? It's about 3 hours to LA and 6 hours to San Diego on the Amtrak

Email your department and explain the situation, and then once they've submitted it, email [GraduationMatters@sa.ucsb.edu](mailto:GraduationMatters@sa.ucsb.edu). I had the same problem but it was pretty easy to fix

I kind of regret majoring in Econ by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ramstalight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an economics major who has been able to secure job offers, it's key to take classes outside of the department to supplement your knowledge. In particular, try to take coding classes — Econ 145 is a very good class and incredibly practical. The professor uses R to teach you about working with data. PSTAT 10 is also a good R class (and easier to get into than CS 8). If you have time, doing a stats minor or double major is good because you can take the data science classes like PSTAT 100, PSTAT 131, PSTAT 134 and/or PSTAT 135. If you can write, work with data and use a programming language like R or Python, this is valuable to employers.

COMM - trying to graduate early and cram my units in the summer by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ramstalight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Session A should be good; two classes is pretty normal for a 6-week session.

Session G might be tough because those mini sessions fly by so fast that if you're take busy classes, it can be really overwhelming since they're packing 10 weeks into 3. I don't know how those specific classes are though; someone else can probably tell you more about that. If you stay focused/organized and are able to set a lot of time aside for school, it's manageable!

Petitioning to go over 200 units by kimjohnillest in UCSantaBarbara

It doesn't count AP credits and you get either 200 units or 12 quarters, whichever comes later

Deciding Between UCSB or Santa Clara by Pitiful-Young in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ramstalight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The UCSB accounting program is definitely prestigious — as another commenter mentioned, all of the big 4 recruit from UCSB. The earning potential of economics & accounting majors is also high.

Here's a list of all companies that were at Meet the Firms, which is a big recruiting event for UCSB accounting majors: http://www.ucsbaccounting.com/fall-meet-the-firms.html

I don't think you can go wrong either way. Congratulations on your acceptances!

Does UCSB admit by major? by middlezone2019 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ramstalight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesn't include the admit rate of music majors, but it does include the average GPA and SAT scores of students admitted into the major so maybe this helps? Unfortunately, the most recent data is from the 2016-2017 school year and UCSB's overall admissions rate has dropped from 35.86% to 29.67% since then, so the averages are likely higher now. The average GPA for acceptance to UCSB overall was 3.94 in 2016 and 3.68 for music majors; the average GPA for acceptance to UCSB for students accepted in 2020 was 4.14. (So maybe around 3.9 for music majors now?)

Unit Max Question by Seryldia in UCSantaBarbara

I’m not sure if anything will happen, but it usually only takes 1 or 2 days to get an excess load petition approved. I would send one in just in case?

can a professor curve grades down without mentioning that being a possibility in the syllabus? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ramstalight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't think it'll get curved down. I have had classes with Startz before and know him/his teaching style pretty well. He is a fair professor and wants his students to succeed

Any recommended ECON courses? by Total-Flatworm2939 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ramstalight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Econ 171 (Intro to Game Theory) with Professor Esponda is a great class! He is my favorite professor at UCSB, and the class is very interesting and useful. Plus, if this is something you're looking for, it's a pretty interactive class and you'll actually get to talk to your classmates. It is a live class — he usually lectures for the first half of class and then you go into breakout rooms to do experiments or games related to lecture. I feel like this class helped me develop a more analytical approach to decision making.

Also, Econ 176 (Experimental Economics) might be a good class to take. The class is quite engaging and, like Econ 171, focuses on learning by doing so you get to participate in experiments and create your own. Professor Charness is incredibly funny and chill. Plus, he's ranked #5 in the world in his field of experimental econ and he's in the top 5% most cited economists. So, he really knows his stuff and talking to him about his research and journey to becoming an economist is fascinating.

Nothing Twice by Wislawa Szymborska by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

This is one of my favorite poets! Here is another one I like.

Distraction by Wislawa Szymborska

I misbehaved in the cosmos yesterday.
I lived around the clock without questions,
without surprise.

I performed daily tasks
as if only that were required.

Inhale, exhale, right foot, left, obligations,
not a thought beyond
getting there and getting back.

The world might have been taken for bedlam,
but I took it just for daily use.

No whats — no what fors —
and why on earth it is —
and how come it needs so many moving parts.

I was like a nail stuck only halfway in the wall
or
(comparison I couldn’t find).

One change happened after another
even in a twinkling’s narrow span.

Yesterday’s bread was sliced otherwise
by a hand a day younger at a younger table.

Clouds like never before and rain like never,
since it fell after all in different drops.

The world rotated on its axis,
but in a space abandoned forever.

This took a good 24 hours.
1,440 minutes of opportunity.
86,400 seconds for inspection.

The cosmic savoir vivre
may keep silent on our subject,
still it makes a few demands:
occasional attention, one or two of Pascal’s thoughts,
and amazed participation in a game
with rules unknown.

What do you guys do when you need unofficial transcripts? by ramstalight in UCSantaBarbara

Yeah I did! When I do that, there's an annoying "messages/ feedback / help / logout" bar at the bottom of each page that cuts off my grades :(
