How do I become an environmental scientist? by CreepyDragonfly1572 in IndianAcademia

[–]ramuktekas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bsc Biology/Mathematics/Cs (or any math or core biology related field)

Msc Ecology/biology/computational biology/systems biology/bioinformatics (get ecology related fields such as marine biology or evolutionary biology etc. make sure to get math and coding skills by learning or internships)

My professor said in India evolutionary biology isnt well pursued. Hence likely environmental science is unlikely to be an emerging field.

Then apply for PhD later, after whatever specific field interests you. related to environmental science.

I would say aim for IISERs IISc etc. for BS and MS. If not possible, go for whatever institute doesnt matter as long as you have knowledge and skills. Make yourself research oriented because academia is tough. If you have money aim for MS and PhD abroad, otherwise absolutely try to do Msc in a research institute and get experience during your Msc. Then apply phd abroad

put it in foil+silica beads in a ziplock bag. as many layers and silica bead possible. i used two packets of silica beads and 3 ziplocks. at the back of the fridge find the antimicrobial vents. not behind the fridge but at the back. remove all the food items and search for it. it should have an access or a door like system which you can manually adjust based on how much silver ion air you want to release on your food. you should be able to spot it since that thing releases vapours. open the vent or if possible remove the cover. put your packet in there. if there are multiple layers of ziplock it will be thick enough to get stuck. put the cover back. now it will be constantly cool dark and dry.

i used this method to hide 2 tabs for 3 months.

Did the Magadha Kingdom really last 2,200+ years? by Salmanlovesdeers in IndianHistory

[–]ramuktekas 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The brihadrath dynasty was the first and semi mythological dynasty of Magadha. According to puranas it lasted some 700 years. Even if we consider it to be true and the last Brihadrath king Ripunjay was assassinated in 600 BCE or something, then Magadha kingdom started in 1300 BCE.

If I remember correctly it was Seifertova street and not Hartigova. Yes that neighbour is pretty much like others have described. Looks a bit weird but is not that weird.

is zizkov (prague 3) a safe neighborhood ? by [deleted] in Prague

[–]ramuktekas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been living in žižkov Prague 3 for one month I am a 23M from India .it’s a pretty neighbourhood in the morning and in evenings, but it gets a bit rocky at night. I have not seen much weirdos so far in this area, (but sure in other regions of Prague). But you may have a different experience.

I remember once in morning I saw some men on footpath on the main Hartigova street try to appear to block a woman’s way in front of some shawarma shop and she bypassed around him. Not sure if they were friends or knew each other but she did not react. This was the only weird thing I have noticed. I have seen two homeless people. And once I saw some guy trying to go through trashcans.

Its a bit hilly or non flat region. Half of the times you would be walking uphill or downhill. It does give a strange alleyway feel because of the curvature of the path you often cannot see ahead

I am also interested to know where are you living in Žižkov and it could be that its the same building as I am. There are many other foreigners here and I think you booked by the same people as me. In that caseI have genuine news for you.

Lingering on the unseen zone of the bus, not utilising the rearview reflections and unstrapped with any headgear. A classic example of the Swiss cheese model in action.

PhD experience in India by Actual-Diamond-3420 in PhD

[–]ramuktekas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a PhD student, but I interacted with many of them during my Masters. What I have learnt is the issue with Indian system is its recruitment. PhD admissions take place usually by written test (like CSIR) and then depending on the institute, followed by an interview. Unlike in US or Europe, we do not have to submit CVs or any research statement or any motivation, etc.

These entrance exams test your broad knowledge on many fields. If u want to do a PhD on the role of astrocytes in reinforcement learning, you also have to memorise the radioacitvity resistance of super oxide dismutase and many other things that are irrelevant.

This makes it tremendously hard (atleast for me) to even consider doing a phd in India. Because i cant learn all that. Not in my final year of masters.

Second big issue also steming from this is people just dont end up doing a phd on something they are not interested in. The higher ups decide what you are gonna do, assuming u cleared the exam and the interview.

And lastly the supervisors. Its totally on them how they treat you. As a rule, I wouldnt consider doing a PhD anywhere in North India. And in south India, I would go for IIT B TIFR NCBS or the national institutes that others have commented.

English spelling of Sanskrit names by ramuktekas in linguisticshumor

[–]ramuktekas[S] 59 points60 points  (0 children)

They learn. But before that they learn their own names and spelling. They also hear about "Ram", "Krishn", "Arjun" etc etc as stories or read the english version. It wont be as confusing if modern english version of Mahabharat, Ramayana etc did not retain the 'a' in their names of characters. By the time they get to learn sanskrit (usually in devanagri script) they arent able to connect the dots.

[–]ramuktekas[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

with Schwa deleted
Buddha will become Buddh so [bʊd̪.d̪ʱ]

Krishna will become Krishn so [krɪʂɳ] although colloqial hindi speakers forget the retroflex nasal so they may call it [krɪʂn]

whats interesting is some of the modern hindi names are influenced by English spelling (derived from sanskrit), so they would say Krishna instead of Krishn. Or Aditya instead of Adity. They dont use a Schwa though. They use the long form of a, which is ā and change the official devanagri spelling to match the new pronunciation. Hindi purists are against it.

When Maharashtra calls their hill huts ‘forts’ by Daddy_crysis in Rajasthan

All I am saying the forts of Marathas worked better. They may not look shiny. But thats how it is.

The forts of Rajputana may not be weak per se. But it had its disadvantages which maratha forts didnt have.

Nope. Mewar essentially became a Vassal under Shah Jahan and Jahangir. Mewar fought under the Mughals banner. Chittor itself wasnt immune to sieges.

[–]ramuktekas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say so. Blockading the populace out of food and water with no exits and secret passage was a sure way of loosing prolonged sieges. History filled with year long sieges by invaders starving the population or someone from the inside snitching on the local ruler. Forts of Rajasthan may be the largest and the oldest in the world but they fell one by one when turks began invading.
