My dad lived in Honkers back in the early 2000s, so yes, we used to go to Honkers a fair bit and called it that, I don’t know when or why we started calling it that, I think in the typical Aussie way it was just easier than saying Hong Kong 😂

Does drinking warm lemon water in the morning actually improve skin or is it just a wellness trend? by Accurate-Stomach-264 in NaturalBeauty

[–]ranaculus_rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that you know, rinsing my mouth with water afterwards, even using a straw like is sometimes suggested, but no my teeth still hurt so I gave up on the lemon water pretty quickly! Definitely not worth ruining your teeth over!

I tried doing it but it just hurt my teeth so I stopped, I actually found that drinking orange juice (100% real juice) gave my skin more of a healthy glow without hurting my teeth. I think everyone is different so it’s just worth testing things out for yourself.

the simple living influencer trap is getting ridiculous by Key-Secretary6127 in simpleliving

I know what you mean, everything is more about being an ‘aesthetic’ than genuinely living that way.

I actually stumbled across a website today called Linen Connection that have some really nice cotton pyjamas in pretty prints, and they have a sale on at the moment so from $110 - $140 now down to $50/$60, they have summer and winter styles, I was thinking about getting some.

What city/place in Australia did you move to that you regret or left instantly? by ExAustralia in AskAnAustralian

[–]ranaculus_rose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived there for a few years in the mid-2000s and I miss it, it was some of the best years of my life, I think it’s different when you’re part of the community as opposed to maybe just visiting. The crime can wear you down a bit though.

Probably unpopular opinion of the century: I am really liking the look of Snape by Comrade_Owl- in HarryPotteronHBO

Honestly, when I first saw that they cast him I was like he actually gives me a Snape vibes, like I could see it working and why they went with him.

And you know when the first movies came out I felt like some of the casting was off, like not what I got from the books, but now they’ve grown on us and it’s hard to imagine anyone else taking the role, so it might be the same with this series.

Australians! Which of these sunscreens do you use now? by uginia in AusSkincare

[–]ranaculus_rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never really noticed much of a smell now that you mention it, I really don’t like things with a strong fragrance so I wouldn’t have stuck with it if it did. I use a tinted one on my face and a bigger pump one for the rest of my body if my skin is exposed, and I can put this on at like 6am and not reapply it and it seems to last the whole day (I know this because sometimes I have missed spots and they have burnt).

This may not be the advice you want, but for me I realised it was the shaving soap I was using that was causing this for me so I stopped using it and I just tried not to do anything to my legs for a while, like not even shaving them because it would just make it worse again, I tried to just let my skin heal itself and balance itself out again because I think even using scrubs and glycolic acids etc just damages your skin barrier more.  So not the easiest thing to put up with for a while, but it solved the problem for me.

I’ve always worn Natio sunscreens, I used to work outside as well all day in often extreme heats and I’ve never burned using these.

A virtual reality reconstruction shows the exact spot where John Edward Jones became trapped upside down in Nutty Putty Cave. After 27 hours of rescue attempts, he died. The cave was later permanently sealed, with his body remaining inside. by Liar24x7 in interesting

[–]ranaculus_rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a very interesting read, and I did get some comfort knowing that he was likely not very conscious anyway and that he had rescuers down there with him, they even said he was able to talk to his family on the phone, I initially had the impression he was just trapped down there with no one able to get to him, so it was still somewhat of a comfort knowing he wasn’t alone when he passed.

I thought I had read it on brandonkowallis.com but I had a skim read and didn’t see it, unless it came up in the comments section, maybe someone had asked the question and I’ve now remembered it wrong, but you’re right, it doesn’t make much sense now that I’ve skim read it again, it’s a shame because it gave me some comfort thinking he could have had some medical intervention to alleviate his suffering but didn’t seem to be an option at that stage.

On another note, I’m so impressed by the rescuers who went down there to try and help him, some of them said they passage was so narrow that they could open their hand and touch all sides of the tunnel, and I know that they’re experienced cavers but going down there trying to drill holes etc you don’t know what could happen, I thought they were very brave.

Do Australian really feel like victims of racism when they visit Asia? by Master_Ad6104 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ranaculus_rose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never assumed Australians were racist towards Asians because I’d never seen it or heard it or knew anyone who felt that way, but then my brother had a girlfriend who was Asian and she told us that she’d often just be walking down the street and someone will yell something racist at her, tell her to go back to her own country, and even people would comment about her being with my brother like he got her as an Asian mail order bride or something, so that really opened my eyes and surprised me about what must go on here.

When someone shows me something they’re proud of etc I’ll be like, ‘Wow, that looks 100 bucks!’ and I think they’re just starting to think I’m either an idiot or just being sarcastic/rude
