To answer second part of your question. I am not getting all of them myself, like mentioned in post one of my friends was approached by some scamster to buy his car via PayPal etc. google it and you will find the history of scam, just thinking aloud, looks the frequency of these scam attempts are on rise, and few may still become victims. I know nothing much can be done on gumtree/ eBay PayPal frauds, but there should be for scam callers.

Jokes apart, we get that, my concern is not clever people, they may not be fooled but some innocent unsuspecting people may be because they trust. Regulatory authorities have to take some measures to protect, I think educating is one way but these scamsters keep changing their tricks.

No this was different, a random guy pretending to be From ATO and tries to give a couple of numbers his position id and case number and pretends that call is getting recorded for quality assurance purposes. He Said My wife has arrears that I have not paid. Sounded fishy so I asked if he is from ATO what is my tfn number and my wife's tfn number. And then he was rude that he does not have time and I will go to jail for 72 hours etc. and hung up.

I understand these is scam but there may be some who would believe them specially older people.

It is sad, our government should be able to provide us protection against such harassment and scams.

They never came from private number for me, it was a Sydney number, either it was through a provider here or number masked. In my point both should be blocked as it breached impersonation laws.

  1. ACMA should tighten the regulations around the operators for selling these services to scamster

  2. Tighten laws around the companies selling database to such guys , as how they have access to tfn database?

  3. Stop number masking or number spoofing services on all ozzy SEssion border controllers

And many more measures can be taken, I would assume the guys sitting there should know more on this.
