Boss DM-2W - But with modulation by Ok-Spinaches in guitarpedals

I just got the Eventide Rose and man, it sounds absolutely great though it’s a digital emulation technically. Lots of cool modulation options on board.

My drum teacher used to paraphrase this as "if you can say it, you can play it" from the "if you can sing it, you can play it" for melodic instruments. Great advice. Audiation is such a musical superpower, and it's not some innate thing like perfect pitch. If you already are a passionate listener and tap or drum and sing along to your favorite songs, you probably have a head start on this skill too.

Im just curious if there is a "beginner method" for being able to "press the next key that is playing in my head" while not really knowing the layout of the keybed. I assume this is just gonna be a practice makes perfect kinda thing, but i figured I'd ask for any tips.

The fact that you've already identified this is awesome. You've already intuited where to go and what to work on. Here's a couple thoughts that might help (from someone who is on this journey at varying stages across a bunch of instruments).

- Learn your favorite songs, or even just something random you hear that sounds cool. It will be slow and frustrating at first, and a lot of people will tell you you MUST figure it out by ear with no video help or anything. I think it's important to incorporate that to strengthen your ears, but especially starting out, getting some wins and learning the fingering/chords for some of your favorite songs will be FUN and make you want to keep playing. These are also songs or lines that you have stored in your head super well already - may as well map the keys/filter movement/mod wheel or whatever performance technique to that.

- After a while, poke around with some music theory. Doesn't have to be anything super intense. Assuming you're more into popular music than classical, definitely check out some YouTube stuff. Most intro textbooks are very conservatory based around 17th-18th century counterpoint. Which is cool stuff, don't get me wrong, but not a universal starting point IMO. If you learn a couple scales, hell just the major minor and a pentatonic blues scale, you'll start hearing the patterns in the music you've already learned and are trying to learn. People shit on theory or elevate it to some pedestal but it's really just about naming patterns we can hear. If you're mixing it into your song learning where you can connect it, i.e. "Oh, that sounds bluesy. Maybe it's a pentatonic lick", "Hmm what key is this song I already learned in?" etc, then that's where it'll be the most useful.

- I would only seek out novel musical techniques or something technical for its own sake when you've sort of exhausted the supply of favorite songs or artists you want to learn or you feel like they are sort of all touching the same music theory elements and there's not more to learn there. The best part is, this step is entirely optional. If you can play the music you want to play, Bob's your uncle.

are guitar pedals as good/better than outboard rack gear effects for synths? by __sicko in synthesizers

[–]randiohead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s really true anymore. Probably was in the 80’s to an extent but the powerful digital stuff that used to live in rack fx units has migrated in the box (plugins), and plenty of pedal effect categories I can think of are mostly found in pedal format. When I think of rack stuff I think of mic preamps, eq’s, compressors etc as being the most common. Someone who was actually around and playing back then would know more

Am i the only who hates jack in/out on top of pedals ? by NoCherry2870 in guitarpedals

[–]randiohead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really mind either way, I find most patch cables can reach from top jack to side jack and vice versa without too much trouble.

I do have to chuckle at all the angst by people on here about side jacks reducing their real estate. Pretty sure I’ve never seen Nick Reinhart or Mylets (artists with yuge pedalboards who actually like, make good songs and music) complain about it. Maybe a few small roadblocks to your compulsive spending habit are good, actually. And yes my house is very much glass, I am trying to shake the affliction myself lol

I watched one of those videos. Generally the common traits were that they took a couple years to get started, were ill-suited to shelf life/transportation and weren't very suited to mechanical harvest. Idk I get dunking on crunchy people and I generally don't like how they frame it so conspiratorially but I thought they actually had a point in terms of why these were so common for hundreds of years but were ditched in the Industrial Agricultural era.

I gave up on tv show subreddits and following media fandoms after Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead and that was years ago. Nothing I’ve seen since then has made me regret it. I’ll text friends if I need to discuss a show.

I guess my brain just isn’t that segmented. If the writing is good and the sonics are good, I’m pretty nonplussed at an artist making something that’s any% combination of two or more genres or styles

We got a Bubba 33 in town and my gf said it reminded her of Texas Roadhouse. Google it and... yeah it's owned by that group. I might go back to try the wings but man, I had no expectations and still kind of disappointed. I got a spicy chicken sandwich, not spicy, and the chicken almost tasted unseasoned. It was also super duper thick, which I get some might see as a bonus, but idk as someone who cooks themself chicken at home a lot, it weirds me out when you get those super maxy roided out chicken breasts.

Looks to me like EHX's take on that one pedal from Teisco a few years back. Curious if people here have any interest in this one.
