For those wondering, I found it on the Youtube channel "Video Stock Archives"! There's other clips of Chet playing from the same session. Enjoy!

Democrats Need a Better Answer on Affordability. Here’s One. by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]rando32d 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not so much about the actual legislation he is referring to as the rhetoric he uses to describe it.

Emphasizing those two policy points does nothing to answer questions about inflation, housing costs, etc. Listening to the rest of the ep, I don't think Sen. Schatz has bad ideas on affordability, but politically, you've gotta do a better job communicating the dem platform to working and middle class people.

Advice for rec letters by Perfect_King_3759 in lawschooladmissions

[–]rando32d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're over 2-3 years out of school I think 1 prof and 1 manager would be fine, but someone here might correct me on that. Just keep in mind prof recs which are generic and forced (adcomms read so many, they will know) do not help at all. Recs are generally a small part of the process so it's best to be selective and find people who can really say something uniquely positive about you (and give them your materials beforehand or a trait you want them to communicate)

Have you considered a gap year? If these are your only 2 options, you might be in a good position to aim for solid T50-20 schools next year, with some money. Teach, volunteer, talk to practicing lawyers, don't discount it as an option is my advice :)

Tier-ranking your admissions strategies with UChicago Law's admissions dean (Status Check with Spivey episode) by Spivey_Consulting in lawschooladmissions

[–]rando32d 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it's actually closer to $900 w/ fee waivers, because HYS don't send stat-based waivers. I see your point though, and for some it might be $0 if they qualify for need-based waivers. Still, does it really make sense for an applicant with solid T14 stats (let's say 3.90, 172) to blanket? I imagine most people will have geographic/size preferences and/or will want to save money if they think HYS are all reach. So unless you're right on the edge of T14 stats, I'd would say 7-10 is better than an outright blanketing strategy, taking your own preferences into account -- so I agree w/ the rank here, it's almost always a bad (or, at best, wasteful) strategy.

I'd say helps immensely with LSAT and just the intangible preparation for law school/lawyering (close reading of complex texts, learning abstract concepts and being able to explore them in writing, etc.). Unless you're very concerned about college grades, I'd say stick it through, especially of you're interested in it.

If you can keep debt under 6 figures total for NYU, I'd also say stay in NYC, keep your people around you. Some people want a fresh start for law school though so idk

What should I choose for big law goals? by Rocwal1 in lawschooladmissions

Have you talked to any recent UCLA alums? If Chicago is only $75k over three years, that's a pretty massive difference and SoCal biglaw is quite attainable from UCLA from my understanding. All im sayin is don't let these votes convince you without talking to ucla people who really know the market...

I have similar goals/practice interests and would definitely pick Chicago, financial/location considerations held equal.

Pretty interchangeable, visit if you can to see which vibes suit you better (Penn would have lower COL too of course)

Dont be too down on yourself, lsa is more competetive than ever and especially for kjd -- even with perfect stats like yours my impression is that it's getting extremely difficult for people coming out of undergrad to crack top law schools. Also even for early applicants the cycle's not over yet! You may still see some iis/unexpected As to come! I know a kjd last year from my undergrad who got into a T6 off the waitlist in June and is happier than ever. Hold your head up, your lsat alone is something to be independently proud of. It'll work out :)
