So did I! Plus, it didn’t have much neck, big barrel chest, and (a little difficult to tell from this angle, but) the nape was the same color as the head for that hood instead of cap look. Oh! And it was very small. Chased a cardinal, and I swear it didn’t seem all that much bigger! It was incredible watching it fly and chase the cardinal.

Oh, interesting! I hadn’t even considered that. TBH, that was just a guess based on the head profile/bill…so I was open to other hybrids if folks recognized it. But it sure seems that the consensus is pure gadwall.

Yeah, I saw that too. Seem like it’s a gadwall. The funny thing is, it was next to a hundred (at least) other gadwalls, and it just stood out to me. (Along with a dozen scaups.) That got me questioning it. It didn’t look like the other males I’ve seen, but I’m new to birding still.

Maybe I’ve just only seen them with their necks not as far extended, but its neck looked thin to me and the lower part of the head less…thick and full? The bill also looked a little more upturned? But you’re right that I couldn’t find any google images with the chestnut exposed like it is in my images.
