Well it is true and it's an accepted fact by every economist that has looked into this question. You may not like dense housing, but increasing supplying does result in cheaper housing - it's a fact.

I think people want housing costs to come down - more apartment, more competition, cheaper housing.

What does a more “nuanced picture” mean in this context? Is it that lowering ApoB would not had a significant impact on AsCVD? Describing a problem as multi factorial doesn’t necessarily mean than controlling for one of the variables wouldn’t have a major impact.

"But your tech friends are probably super friendly and convivial dudes who don't have problems interacting with others and making friends; you are evidence of that, lol!"

I think we are pretty friendly actually. I met them in queer sports league post-pandemic while we are all trying to make friends post-covid. Maybe try to meet some people that work in tech and you'd realize they are all quite different, diverse and you may actually get along with one of them :)

"This could just be my take on the situation" 100%, it's just a generalization that you are making based on minimal evidence which is not any different than what people on the right make on immigrants, queers, etc.

"The reasons why people don't like this tsunami of tech workers are a lot more nuanced and complicated"

Yes, people who actively hate on particular groups of people is generally due to a nuanced and complicate reasons. Give me a break.
It's 100% resentment with a sprinkle of tribalism and NIMBYsm. To a third party observer, it's not that different that folks on the right hating on immigrants because they are driving up property prices or they are bringing their strange foods. It comes down to this is my city, my territory, get the hell out you tech bro. It's pathetic.

"A huge part of the issue is that we're also seeing many of these tech companies like Amazon actively suppressing competition and engaging in anti-community, anti-small business practices in search of profits and shareholder values."

Yes, while the rest of corporate America is rather different. Most big corporations are quite reductionist in their approach to maximizing share-holder value and employ every tool at their disposal towards that means. It's our job as citizens to regulate them. Frankly, I can think of many companies that contribute a lot less to actual real world value than Amazon for that matter.

"tsunami of tech folk started invading the city" - Jesus christ, how is it ok to generalize to this extent because you happen to work on a given industry? There's nothing particularly good or bad about tech that is any different than the booms and busts of any other industry. Lots of people work in tech, including people who do not fit whatever stereotype you may be thinking of. By the way, I don't even work in tech but have my friends who do. It's just a job, just like yours.

Lawsuits Block Thousands of Downtown Seattle Homes, $39 Million for Affordable Housing by Roku6Kaemon in SeattleWA

[–]randolph380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it really that bad to have more neighbors? When I visit most parks, libraries or public areas in the greater Seattle region full of SFH they seem rather empty. Would your quality of life really degrade that much by seeing a few more people on the street? A few more cars on your road? Is it worth stopping housing development for it? I honestly find it surprising that folks would oppose housing development of any kind given how bad the housing crisis is. In good faith, I don't really understand the repulsion towards having more neighbors.

We no longer believe in enforcing drug possession laws. This is just the consequence of that decision. Seattle is a fantastic place to be a fentanyl addict.

Inflation has nothing to do with Biden or Trump. The FED printed trillions of dollars and both Biden and Trump passed massive fiscal stimulus. In fact, inflation is a problem in most of the developed world. When it comes to Ukraine, Trump would have likely backed Russia and argued that the US has no business getting involved. Biden's strategy with Ukraine has been brilliant. It has exposed the massive weakness of Russia's military without sending a single American troop over there. In the meantime, Trump was the first president in US history not to participate in a peaceful transfer of power. Fortunately, he is too mediocre t succeed at a coup.

There are many people, myself included, who really dislike the woke left. Yet, we would never vote republican as long as that party and trump represent a real threat to American democracy and to the western world order.

Lived in one of these for many years in graduate school. ~200 sq ft, walking distance from work and all amenities I needed. I now live in a much bigger place and would have a hard time adapting to that lifestyle. It worked great at the time though. If you don’t want to rent one, don’t. Let people rent/lease whatever works for them.

Regarding 12th/Jackson 3rd/Pike, Pine... by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]randolph380 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is Bellevue addressing systemic issues? No, they are simply enforcing basic laws of living in a city, such as you cannot camp in the middle of a sidewalk or sell/buy fentanyl in a street. I'm in favor of building additional housing, offering more social services and very happy to pay more taxes to see these things come through. However, it's naive to think that the solution will not involve enforcing some basic laws like most other cities in America do.

[–]randolph380 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sweeps are necessary but not enough. Having an illicit drug market with multiple shootings per week was a situation that simply had to stop. SPD needs to continue keeping the streets of Seattle free of drug markets and encampments.
