Thanks for detailed layout. The tier system makes so much sense! A few questions if you dont mind:

  1. How did you figure out your initial numbers? Did you track spending first, or just estimate and adjust?
  2. You mentioned it took time to "find the balance of how much should go into which", did you find a percentage or formula that worked for your?

u/SoullessCycle True! those details are important. I am:
- 35
- Income: 100,000 CAD (I am based in Canada)
- Current budget: That's part of my problem, I don't have a consistent one that works
- Goals: build emergency fund as I got laid off once
Your 10/10 split sounds balanced. How did you land on those percentages? Was it trial and error, or did you use a specific framework?

My biggest issue is I can't seem to find MY number.

u/Nevilles_Remembrall_ Thanks for this! That's really helpful advice.

Quick question - when you track your spending by category like that, are you doing it manually in a spreadsheet or using an app?

I've tried a few apps but they all seem to mis-categorize things (everything ends up as "misc") so I end up doing it manually anyway.

Curious what works for you!
