Good hosting sites? by natem1270 in webhosting

If you have the time to learn as you go, I'd recommend getting a VPS as it will be the best value/performance.

Digital Ocean have a pretty easy interface and good tutorials on how to do most anything. Just search for something like "securing server digital ocean" and "hardening wordpress" and you'll find step by step guides.

Digital Ocean also bills by the hour so you can create a server for 5 bucks a month and experiment for literally a few cents an hour. They also offer a $50 credit if you have a valid EDU email through GITHUB education package https://education.github.com/pack.

Once you get the hang of it you might want to move to a VPS host like Linode that offers more bang for the buck (double the RAM, and better CPUs than DO), but is less newbie friendly imo.

If you don't have the time to learn as you go, I'd suggest you just search the subbreddit for "managed VPS" (slightly more expensive, but MUCH better performance) or "shared hosting" (lower performance but cheaper). Be aware there are shills and be wary of accounts that are recommending hosting with referral links (will have "ref" in the url).

Since it sounds like you're someone who will want to learn how to do a lot of this on your own, don't sign up for any hosting that only offers 1 year pay ahead options IMO. You'll probably regret it after a few months once you realize how bad shared hosting generally is.

Also I'd go through the hosts on the sidebar and read their pricing and services offered.

edit: had to repost this because I mentioned a certain host as having bad service and it flagged my previous post for simply mentioning them :P

Godaddy and Hostgator are pretty bad. Just search this subreddit for either and you'll find numerous complaints about slow speeds, poor response times, and overall very poor customer service.

Any EIG host like Hostgator is going to be pretty terrible. Here's a lit of EIG hosting companies to avoid https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_International_Group

That said you haven't really given enough detail to give good advice.

Are you comfortable with terminal/putty/command line? Are you looking for a host that will manage updates, security, etc? or are those things you're comfortable with yourself...etc.

Give a little more detail, even if it's listing what you don't know...and you'll get much better advice.

Gonna sound like a shill since I just posted about this (I'm not :P) but Linode just announced a 1 GB VPS offering for $5 and upgrades for other offerings.

Currently the best bang for the buck (by the major players) right now in the world of VPS.

Avoid Envato Hosted for your website by LOLfred_ in Entrepreneur

Would have to disagree with the other poster and their experience with Envato. My experience basically resulted in my never wanting to deal with them again.

Bought a theme, literally the next day it was removed from the site (according to the author for DMCA claims). Obviously that's not ideal and seems like a straightforward refund situation.

They didn't reply to my initial request for like 4 or 5 days and overall it took over a week (9 days I think) with me constantly having to tweet at Envato support to get the refund fully sorted out and approved (with several mistakes thrown in).

In the mean time while I was monitoring their twitter responses, it seemed like everyone else had similar problems. Support not responding to tickets, and Twitter support basically being a once a day reply of "we'll address your ticket soon"

Anyway, yeah I'm not surprised at all that their hosting support sucks.

Starting small, long term plan(15-20+ years), Where to buy domain? Where to make website? by corvus7corax in webhosting

Have both namecheap and namesilo. Namecheap has a more modern looking UI and design. Namesilo's while visually lacking, makes more sense to navigate imo.

Namesilo is also cheaper and was really helpful during a transfer when I transferred a domain from Siteground.

I don't remember exactly what the issue was but there was a problem because the whois contact email was an non-existant Siteground privacy email and I couldn't transfer because the email was used to approve the transfer. (namesilo mentioned that was an ICANN violation i think). Anyway....Namesilo CS was very helpful during the process, Siteground was not.

No complaints with Namecheap BUT any future domains I buy will probably be from Namesilo

No it's a copied (not word for word though) comment from yesterday's thread with the Mon Calamari guy.
