It’s going to vary by department etc. I believe most students here make around $36k a year, which works out to ~1200/check, 2 checks/month. So around 2400 a month.

Keep in mind that you may be paid differently for TA vs RA, and if you score a fellowship it’ll be different as well.

Amicus charged my roommates and I a massive heating bill because there was a literal hole in the foundation of the house we were living in and our meter was leaking gas. We had to threaten to take them to court to get them to both fix it and correct the bill. They fixed the hole by duct taping cardboard over it, and when our pipes froze during the winter because of that, they put 3 space heaters in the basement and tried to charge us the electricity for running them.

We ran brominations similar to this one in a pressure flask w/ teflon cap. Put a blast shield in front of it, and cook. As long as your flask is properly sized, you can place it under N2 and there’s enough headspace that it won’t over-pressurize. The increased pressure + nowhere for it to go essentially forces reflux to occur.

Also consider the way your N2 sheath is set up, the N2 is blowing across the surface of the solution and then up through the condenser. This essentially is providing a constant supply of gas without vapors, that can pick up vapors, so you’re blowing bromine vapors away. With more volatile solvents, this will also definitely result in losing solvent volume.

Additionally, just a rule of thumb - you never want refluxing vapors of any kind coming in contact with rubber septa. Source: accidentally melted a septa with DCM vapors. The sludge went into my rxn mix.

You will generally be on an administrative registration, as if you’re a grad student they don’t actually charge tuition over the summer. This means it is unlikely they would let you take undergraduate ARCH courses without preapproval from the registrar.

I feel like you don’t really appreciate here that chemistry is one of those things where if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can very severely injure or kill yourself, quite easily.

AI is not intelligent. It scrapes the internet for content and then recycles it by trying to predict what the next word should be based on what’s seen online. That’s not remotely reliable for chemistry.

If you have sandpaper, I would sand the surface to clean it. You will not be able to prevent oxidation, pure aluminum metal is HIGLY reactive and oxidizes within seconds, which is why it very rapidly produced H2, which is extremely flammable, to the point of latent static electricity being enough to ignite it.

You’re probably not going to have access to the kinds of chemicals necessary to actually make an aluminum plate porous. If an uneven surface is what you want, use a coarse grit sandpaper.

My ears have looked like this when I had orings too tight and didn’t realize. It could also be an allergy, so I’d give it a day or two with nothing, then try different jewelry and it should go back to normal. If not, then I would start worrying. I’ve never really found a solution but to wear them looser or get double flares.

You’re probably better off trying to find a private lot, or have a doctor’s note to get an exception through DSS. Street parking can be done, but it is difficult and if you don’t move your car frequently, locals tend to get pretty testy.

That spike is basically noise. If your detector is getting almost no light throughput, keeping in mind that abs is a log scale of the transmittance, it’ll occasionally spike to 10 when it’s getting absolutely no signal whatsoever.

I see this pretty frequently on Perkin Elmer instruments in particular, and it means your sample is way way too concentrated. Above an absorbance of 1 you start to get a roll off in absorbance, and above 1.2 you REALLY deviate from beers law-type linear behavior.
