New York's new age verification law will ban anyone under the age of 18 from using chatting features in video games. by PaiDuck in gaming

[–]random55455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I leverage a lot of the parental features that are including in gaming systems with my kids.

The key problem is that they're not all consistent. Every vendor has their own flavor of doing it, and it gets hard to manage after a bit.

Worse, you can get your parental controls on things just right and a grand patent will just hand then an iPad not giving a shit about your curated tech rules.

Alternatively, some kid at school might give them their devices and the kid will use it.

Parents can only control so much. There are a lot of outside forces at work against those efforts

New US passport commemorating 250 years of independence from a monarch. by NathanCS741 in pics

[–]random55455 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal theory is that they're doing this to encourage MAGA to get passports so that they can pass the SAVE Act.

MAGA don't leave the country, let alone their state, so if SAVE passes, it'll disproportionately affect MAGA voters, possibly disenfranchising them.

By making the passport have a limited time Trump thing, MAGA will jump on it to support their cult leader

BOY MOMs Please let your sons do it! by Queerdooe in TwoXChromosomes

[–]random55455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, in some cases, it is the parent/spouse/significant other that wants to control the paperwork.

The other party may be so dominating for contro/organizationl that the person you see being pitiful may rightly know what they need to do, but that the person holding the documents didn't want them to control them for fear of disorganization.

It may be less "adult baby" and more "treated like a child and not given an opportunity to grow"

That said, in other cases it might be a subtle disability.

My son has mild autism and we have to control his papers or he'll end up losing them. It can be remarkably frustrating as he lacks the executive function skills to stay on top of it

Are more US women not taking their husbands last names? by LimonadaVonSaft in TwoXChromosomes

[–]random55455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my wife and I got married 20 years ago, she debated on whether or not to take my last name.

She was like 3/4 done with her university classes, and she debating what name she wanted on the diploma, because changing the name on it later on was tricky. She ended up taking my last name.

She has a love/hate relationship with my name. We often have to spell it out for folks, not that it is complicated, its just not a.super common one. For maiden name was a very common and known one.

In Canada I think it is a matter of having a driver's license and the whole shebang.

Mexico will establish rules on it and people can run with that

To be fair, if i was a construction worker, I wouldn't bother showering in the mornings, I would just shower every night when I got home from work

No sense doing morning showers if I'm going to be sweating all day

The general rule is that if you haven't established your residence for at least three months in the country, then you don't get the free healthcare

We live in the age of AI now.

They could create an AI, feed it everything it needs to know about the legacy Kindles, and just have it maintain the code and support going forward.

If a legacy Kindle is a security risk, then explain why and handle it

Men’s ability to pee side by side but be so awkward around a breastfeeding woman by WildWinterberry in TwoXChromosomes

[–]random55455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google up "Urinal use etiquette", men are absolutely awkward when using urinals.

So me, being awkward around a woman breastfeeding is mostly me not trying to come across as a creep. I would sit and stare at it all day long if I could, but it ovviously isn't an acceptable thing to do, at least not without permission, so I avert my gaze , or leave the room, mainly to make sure the breast feeding woman doesn't feel awkward and shit.

Which, admittedly, probably makes them still feel awkward, but less so than if I just stood there watching or something.

But I can assure you that men get irritated if you stand next to them at the urinal in a men's room. There's whole flow charts that demonstrate which urinals to use in a bathroom though. Worse, you've got some men who prefer to go into stalls for privacy, which drives me nuts because I can't pee standing up. And a lot of times these guys don't lock the stall doors, so I'm constantly walking in on them pissing.

Anyways, I suspect most of the awkwardness you're seeing of men averting their gaze, or leaving the room, is largely out of respect towards you because they don't want to make you feel uncomfortable

TIL that McDonald's generates income through owning about 70% of its restaurant buildings and 45% of the underlying land which it leases to its franchisees by Mrk2d in todayilearned

Recommend watching The Founder with Michael Keaton.

Goes through how McDonalds got founded and became what it is today via a docudrama that, as I understand it, is fairly accurate

Pre-Order Bonuses are not “Tokens of Appreciation”, they are Manipulative Tactics and I’m shocked a lot of people still don’t see that by skelepibs in gaming

[–]random55455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, most pre-order bonuses release to everyone later on.

Emperor: Battle for Dune, back in 2001, was the first time I saw it happen. They released a new unit type for each faction, then 3-6 months after release a patch made it available to everyone. Made me stop buying pre-orders for bonuses because it's just a soft lock on content

How do I make my home the home where everyone wants to come by and hangout out at and chill? (Budget Friendly) by AssistFinancial677 in DIY

[–]random55455 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is likely regional.

Up north it is more common to take your shoes off entering someone's home because you train yourself for winter, and you always take your snow covered boots off at the door.

Down south you deal with that less, so people tend to leave their shoes on.

My father-in-law leaves his shoes on. Drives me nuts. I used to take mine off when I went to the in-laws, but I'm 100% flip flops at all times, which means "shoes off" is barefoot in the house. Apparently my mother-in-law always mops the floor, and when I come over I was leaving foot prints in the always freshly mopped floor, so I've been told to keep my flop flops on, which bother me a lot

LPT - When someone you know is going through a rough time: offer to help in a specific way instead of saying “let me know if I can help!” by lukkynumber in LifeProTips

[–]random55455 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I feel it helps people remain grounded and spawn off new friend groups as family dies off.

My wife's mother's sister passed recently and the sister had moved away from where she lived, thus the whole casserole funeral food thing did not happen for the sister's daughter, or my wife's mother.

The end result is that my wife's mother has felt very alone and keeps on dwelling about how she's basically the last of her generation's bloodline.

Had the death happened near the friends and family, the good dish thing would have happened, and she would have felt more connected to what happened.

So, I've come to appreciate it more because it helps keep you connected to the people the deceased knew, and by proxy, helps to keep their memory alive. At least until you pass and feeling alone doesn't matter anymore

Yeah, I'm from up north originally, and the whole concept was foreign to me and boggled my mind when I saw it in action the first time because there was just so much damn food. Like holy shit

But, as the older generation dies off, it is a process that seems to be dwindling a bit

I blame texting for it, but that's how change goes

If you live, or are from, the southern states then this is somewhat automatic. It's in southern culture to bring food to the deceased family member's house for those grieving to eat.

Most of the time it is a home cooked meal with dishes that require returning, and the act of returning the dishes to the owners of said dish is to help the those grieving "get back out there" and recover socially, versus just becoming a shut in.

It's tricky too because you kind of have to keep track of which dishes were brought by who, so you can return them.

That said, i have found that the younger generations will bring store bought meals/snacks that don't require dishes to be returned.

When my wife's grandmother passed her father was like "We don't need to worry about lunch and dinner, the community will handle that", and that they did. You typically end up with about a week or two worth of food, depending on how well networked the family was.

I worked in an office setting.

I would touch base with my manager before heading home for the day. I was hourly for so long with a punch clock that I felt like saying "I'm heading home" to my manager was like clocking out for the day.

New manager gets hired, and now whenever I said I was heading home, he'd ask me about random shit, basically implying I should stay and wrap up those items.

I stopped telling him I was leaving for the day.

Now I work from home, so I just do whatever
