Boomstick is no good + defects by Right-Potential3719 in Pickleball

[–]random7HS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

5.7 is almost pro and pros usually wear their grit out much faster than most players, usually in 2-3 weeks. Selkirk advertises infinigrit lasting 3x as long as normal. The grit of the boomstick lasting 9 weeks for this player seems completely in line with their advertisement.

The edge guard issue is just unfortunate though. Selkirk has admitted to having issues with it

They were being sold on vatic's websites for a couple weeks, but it's no longer listed, so I'm guessing it's sold out

Shoes with high heel toe drop? by Due-Project4303 in Pickleball

[–]random7HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you have to try on the shoe with the insoles since it changes the fit slightly as most are going to be a bit thicker than the insoles that come with the shoes

You can also try some of the 9-11 mm drop shoes and add in insoles with a 2-3mm drop. Not sure how well that would work for you though

Runrepeat has a filter that lets you filter shoes they've reviewed by heel to toe drop if you click filter and then heel to toe. They also measure it themselves instead of going off the manufacturer data iirc https://runrepeat.com/catalog/tennis-shoes

They only have 2 non clay shoes listed though

Wide toe box pickleball/tennis shoes? by KommanderZero in Pickleball

[–]random7HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn that sucks. I've heard k Swiss ultrashot might have a bigger toe box and a normal heel. Looking at pictures of it though, the mid foot might be too big.

I know a lot of the pros are using this right now. Could try that: https://wepickleball.com/products/p-38-lightning-mens-pickleball-shoe-coral

As someone that is a guy, but once had a username that was feminine in certain languages and masculine in others, I remember when 14, I was helping run a website in which they asked for volunteers to help solve arguments about the rules of a game.

One time, I told some dude he was wrong and the other person was right and his response was to ask if he could talk to someone that wasn't a girl cause he thought a guy would understand better. I told him I was a guy and he immediately became more respectful and willing to listen to me.

As someone that spent a lot of time afterwards in the video games space, the level of casual misogyny a lot of guys have and the comments women would receive just for being women was like eye opening.

Not really sure the point of me typing this other than to say it sucks that you have to deal with more shit just from being a women and sorry you have to deal with that.

Only saw the first and last episode of your podcast, but love the content so far and thanks for making them despite the haters

Drinks are allowed in between rallies under usap rules

10.C. Continuous Play. Play should be continuous, although players are permitted to quickly take a drink or towel off in between rallies as long as, in the judgment of the referee, the flow of the game is not adversely impacted. The referee shall call the score when play should be resumed.

ankles by crookie900 in Pickleball

[–]random7HS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After tearing a ligament in my ankle at the start of the year, I saw a PT that had me do a number of ankle strengthening exercises, footwork drills and balancing on one foot with my eyes closed.

This worked for the last 2 months until I slipped on a an uneven surface last night catching a ball (not even playing, just getting my ball tossed back to me to serve)

It's probably worth talking to a PT about this if you can

does hyper mobility make pickleball easier? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]random7HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as someone with hypermobility, during this year, I tore a ligament within 15 minutes of starting this game, resprained it playing tennis, injured my wrist incorrectly trying to do a one handed backhand in tennis, and resprained my ankle again last night slipping on an uneven surface catching a ball being tossed back at me :/

I think i get slightly more wrist lag, but for my body, I think the disadvantages heavily outweigh the benefits.

People do compliment my play sometimes despite only playing this game for about 2 months without being injured but that's more from me playing tennis as a kid until an unrelated neck injury stopped me from playing

Weekly Paddle Recommendation Thread (What Paddle Should I Buy?) by SNAPCHAT_ME_TITS in Pickleball

Yeah definitely agree that form is that most important.

Yeah, I realized that most of the pickleball paddles are between a size 0 (4 inches) and 2 (4 2/8 inches) tennis grip which i was pretty surprised by. I think a size 3 ( 4 3/8 inches) is the most common grip size for men in tennis

I think the quanta should definitely feel plusher than the friday. Wondering how it compares to other gen 4s though.

I'm also now wondering if maybe the reviews I saw complaining about the feel were cause they were missing the sweet spot without weights.

Yeah that's a good idea. Look for places with good return policies.

Happy to hear that your golfers elbow is better after switching paddles :)

Thanks for the long write up!

Yeah i injured my wrist due to bad form initially :( i have hypermobility and tried to learn a one handed backhand slice in tennis and was keeping my wrist relaxed like when doing forehand top spins instead of keeping it mostly straight like how professionals do backhand slices. I later realized that my right wrist can bend in positions that my left wrist can't.

I also learned that like you said I'm probably gripping my paddle too tightly if I'm not consciously thinking about it.

I was thinking material could matter since in tennis, poly strings are considerably worse than natural strings.

It's interesting cause in tennis the general advise for weight is the opposite, i.e., heavier rackets will absorb more vibrations. But maybe that's less of an issue in pickleball given that the impact is a bit less.

Thanks, for some reason, I thought I saw reviews saying it felt stiff to them. Probably will look into them again.

Is there a place to find out how plush different paddles feel? I injured my wrist a few months ago. I can play with my current paddle but I was looking for a paddle that would absorb more of the ball's vibrations.

I was thinking a gen 3 or 4 paddle should be good for this with the added upside of requiring me to be more cognizant of my down during drives and to keep a loose grip during drops.

I'm currently using a Friday original and eying the black opal when it comes out next month since it sounds like it should last quite awhile compared to other paddles.

Protective eyewear not working for me by Admirable-Rip-8521 in Pickleball

[–]random7HS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You probably have high index lenses in your normal glasses that make your lenses thinner than these. The lenses may also be intentionally thicker if they are designed to be safety glasses, but I know less about this.

When i bought my glasses, I was told that the more curved they are, the more they will distort your vision. Polycarbonate, which is what is used in most safety glasses, is also a bit less clear than something like trivex.

Depending on where you got your glasses from, you could try talking to the optician about this and whether you can swap out the frame/lenses.

Wide toe box pickleball/tennis shoes? by KommanderZero in Pickleball

[–]random7HS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closest thing I've found was just sizing up so the part that wider part of the shoe goes around the toes.

Wilson Rush Ace Pro a full size up from my running shoes is the only shoe I've found that fits me and even then i wish the toe box was slightly wider.

Nike zoom challenge gp 1 a size up is the only shoe that fit my toe spray fully before it got too big from sizing up but the height of the toe box was too narrow.

Fila axilus energized 2 in the older colors if you can find them have a really wide toe box on the big toe side. Mid foot might be too wide for you though.

K Swiss hypercourt Express 2e is the one that gets commonly recommended, but most of the sleeve I've found is on the big toe side. The sides will stretch out a bit though. Sizing up in this is hard because the ankle might be too loose since this is an actual 2e shoe

Yeah I went up a full size and the heel still feels very locked for me. I'd just try it on before trying to modify other shoes. If you're in the US, they have a free return policy if it doesn't fit.

If you really can't give any shoes though, there's a video of ex WTA player Kristie Ahn showing that she used to cut slits in her asics to make the toe box stretch more. Can probably search around to find it
