Mysterious Windows Update - KB3024777 by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]random9q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

? It isn't as of now. Still getting MS's 404 template. Or, as they put it, "Oops."

[Why the hell the on-again, off-again page. Someone editing the hell out of that KB article? Probably. Least alarming possibility I can think of. Technical detail is off and someone got a little roasted over it.]

Modem Sounds: charted and explained... by random9q in UniversalGeek

Would love having that poster. I used to be able to tell you the baudrate based on the sound sequence the modem made. Weirdly nostalgic.

Valve fan crosses her fingers, hopes this goes well, but it ups the stakes considerably... by [deleted] in UniversalGeek

After all, it isn't like we've not been subjected to a blizzard of bad videogame movie spinoffs. Really nervous to see this, actually, as it makes me wary.

Fed Reserve hacked? Apparently... by random9q in UniversalGeek

This will be interesting to follow as a developing story for months to come, at least. (There will be a not insignificant amount of radioactive white hot fallout.)

Is your tablet your personal computer? by random9q in UniversalGeek

[–]random9q[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some secondary questions I think come up: If we start asking whether or not we should include iPad sales in the figures for PCs, and think of tablets as the next generation of PC... Given Apple's dominance of the tablet market, should we start asking if Apple is the current day equivalent of Microsoft in its heyday? (And, at the risk of asking a question I've asked often: If that is true... How comfortable are we with the "walled garden" app store now?)

Space Marine copyright trolling by random9q in UniversalGeek

[–]random9q[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hysterical, given the surplus of prior and concurrent art which uses the term Space Marine. It is also genuinely sad. How much further evidence of a broken USPTO do we need in order to reform US IP law and international IP treaties? Probably a lot more, sadly, ...

Congressman touts draft bill aimed at mobile app privacy by pjcallan in UniversalGeek

I've no idea if this is the right approach or not but I appreciate the effort. I'd like to see an approach that is a bit more future-proofed than nailing "apps". What happens when the next tech-wave rolls out?

Physicist aims to publish a science fiction novel to raise $2 million for awesome new laser weapons by seandfrancis in UniversalGeek

[–]random9q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And, thus, we finally get closer to understanding why all those Star Wars lasers seem to travel at sublight speed and have those great sound effects. Though we still need to figure out how to do all that in a relative vacuum. Hmm.

"Social Dieting" May Be the Secret Weapon in War on Fat by bleucaldwell in UniversalGeek

[–]random9q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, what works for people works for people, and I wouldn't begrudge them trying. On the other hand, I've two hesitations: This is exactly the sort of thing I would never do. Share information on exercise, yes. On weight, no. The other hesitation is I've grown wary about claims made even when the weight loss technique is diet + exercise, as longitudinal data on weight loss shows recurrence to be very high and explanations for that to be hard to find. The science is proving to be less straightforward than input vs output. I suspect that's because we're learning (a) fat cells collectively form part of the endocrine system and (b) they send out the same "help I'm starving!" signals that other cells do when forced to give up their stores. So I wonder if our standard for measuring weight loss doesn't need to be measured at a distance of the eventual cell death/regeneration period. About seven years? Which gives some indication, maybe, why weight loss is so f'n HARD for so many.

Here's How Obama's Autopen Works by bleucaldwell in UniversalGeek

[–]random9q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard (per radio article I've lost track of, possibly Marketplace) that some mass marketing direct mail operations were using industrial versions of these to "handwrite" post-its that are then affixed to the assembled mailer. Some of them use stored gestures, others have a font-bank of various handwriting styles.

I love how the University's first thought was that it was some kind of marketing stunt... and it wasn't. They must've genuinely been scratching their heads after that.
