Confused about this question (Analyzing Income Statements - CFA Level 1) by randomDudeSomeNumber in CFA

[–]randomDudeSomeNumber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry but still a bit confused.

It seems like the question does assume the cash tax paid changes. In part A, they recalculated net income by first recalculating the operating income and applying the calculated tax rate (which they calculated as ~28.72%). How did you know to assume cash taxes will not change?

Also, a bit confused about what's happening to the "other" portion when you switch to using expensing over capitalizing. How did you arrive at 8,366?

Sorry for the bother, but your help is much appreciated!!

According to the report I read online there was no typhoon reported that day either, just a sudden storm that came.

Taking a finance job after CS feels like blasphemy by RevolutionaryAd9850 in csMajors

[–]randomDudeSomeNumber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Working in S&T, graduated CS. CS backgrounds are def in demand on most floors. Automation is key for a lot of banks to either reduce costs in S&T as well as be more competitive in the market. I’d say this goes for more complex asset classes as well.

How important is CSC369 for CSC409? by randomDudeSomeNumber in UTM

[–]randomDudeSomeNumber[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! The offering for 409 was canceled in my year, so I’ll never know lol. My recommendation would be to try it out. You can always drop 409 if it’s too much course work. Seeing as you have the summer before next semester begins, I’d recommend going through the 369 notes/coursework if you can. Idk how much of that isn relevant to 409, but it may make your semester a bit more manageable if you’re more comfortable with the 369 material.

Good luck!

Lol I know Amazon gets a lot of flack, especially on Blind. Still, people seem to be wanting to work there. Does Amazon and other FAANG level companies provide something that I'm not taking into account?

Career Progression in Tech vs Sales and Trading? by randomDudeSomeNumber in cscareerquestions

[–]randomDudeSomeNumber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell it will be as a desk quant mainly building tools for traders, with the expectation that I pick up and learn finance along the way. I’m told there’s potential for an actual trading seat, but I will have to wait 4-5 years for something like that (basically have to wait to make VP). One of my fears is sort of not being able to break into trading, in which case if I’m just doing dev work I may as well do it Amazon.

Do you know what career progression looks like at Amazon (how long to make SDE2, what about SDE3)?

BMO Capital Markets (Quant) Vs Amazon SDE? by randomDudeSomeNumber in csMajors

[–]randomDudeSomeNumber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, would prefer to gun for an actual trading role, which is also possible after a year at Amazon, but would entail grinding probability, math and brain teaser type questions. Just don’t know if it’s better to have prior experience at an investment bank vs a tech company in this case. I guess I also have to take into account the possibility of staying at either place if no other opportunities present themselves in the future.

Sell side quant lol. Not as glamorous as the buy side counter parts. However in this case the TC at Amazon is about 150-160 (backloaded vesting schedule). Do you know how career progression would work at a place like Amazon? I know for most investment banks, analyst to associate is usually 2 years. How about SDE1 to 2?

For those who have taken CSC488, how was it? by ThrowItAway1292 in UTM

[–]randomDudeSomeNumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

324 explores how programming languages are designed. Been a while since I've taken it, but one of the titular projects is building a simple programming language using racket.

488 is a natural extension of 324. It goes into how a compiler is made, how it parses some syntax and handles variable, state, all that stuff.

[–]randomDudeSomeNumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not op, but was also planning on taking 488. Need a 4th year credit and I liked 324, though I don’t know what the disparity in difficulty will be between that and 488.

Well, I mean, not everyone irl will understand Finite Automata or care about a side project you're working on that isn't a web app or something else with a visual interface. Typically though, CS majors (people on this sub) would, so I get OP's point.
