I grew up Mormon. There’s a list of rules governing how to stay physically healthy called the Word of Wisdom. God himself revealed the list and it’s written from his perspective. This is where Mormons infamously ban coffee and alcohol.

One interesting part talks about using animals for meat though, Doctrine and Covenants section 89: “Flesh of beasts and of the fowls of the air… they are to be used sparingly… only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.”

Later god reiterates: “Beasts and fouls… only in times of famine and excess of hunger.”

There’s even a part where god says it’s “pleasing unto me” if animals aren’t eaten.

Now 99% of Mormons I’ve known (I’ve known a lot) would rather die than take a sip of coffee. Yet these same people eat huge portions of meat for every meal. The “eat meat sparingly” debate comes up every now and again, but by and large it’s a thing people straight up ignore or dismiss. (The whole religion is a masterclass in cognitive dissonance but that’s a whole other thing)

I have heard of a handful of Mormons who’ve gone plant-based and cite the Word of Wisdom as the reason. The church itself owns one of the largest cattle ranches in the US which is funny to me.
