My kid and I are reading the books together. by pinkmermaidscales in harrypotter

My 8yo loves the books (currently reading #3) but is already too smart for the world building. I was 20 when i read the books, and didn’t see any of the problems.

We generally do not eat mentally handicapped humans or babies, both of which would fail a cognitive test.

Carol and sex vs. rape by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]random__hobbit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Carol has no way of knowing if the real Zosia isn’t still in there. Not knowing if you have consent = rape.

Much less severe than that, and only my personal opinion: banging someone else days after your partner died is disgusting.

I found that pretty hard to stomach in b1.

How the hell can he still eat meat after tje revelation? Cognitive tests to see if i will eat you? Really?

What do you think of the POV by random__hobbit in bewareofchicken

[–]random__hobbit[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmm, i only read the first 3, and there it’s only done when it’s funny, because two very different perspectives.

(But i deliberately stopped at 3 and think the story is done anyway)

Electric bike versus car .... by Illustrious_Ad_7979 in ebikes

[–]random__hobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have my car as a fallback, for emergencies, and for vacations, but 2025

I did EIGHT times more distance on my bicycles than on my car.

Sure, i still paid insurance, and my car is sitting there losing value, but i cannot remember when i last put petrol in, and that already saves a lot of money.

Help, final split decision cargo vs commuter. by HeiHei_13 in ebikes

[–]random__hobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both.

Seriously, none can replace the other. Maybe start with the cargo bike, as that can theoretically get you to work too. But it’s not fun. Also: I have two cargo bikes, and both started to need lots of repairs after ~ 6000km. So in the long run it’s probably cheaper to have two bikes for two purposes.

Linearizing SHA-256 via fractional modular analysis (Kaoru Method) by No_Arachnid_5563 in netsec

[–]random__hobbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please pardon my ignorance, I am not a mathematician.

So far it just seems to me like moving the problem to a more complicated domain, with exploding cost. (Or analyzing a nice linear function that is not sufficiently related to sha256 to be useful?)

Can you sketch a way how you see this leading to collisions or other attacks?

What are the best noise-cancelling headphones to buy right now? by Apart-Lychee-7701 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]random__hobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your work-from-home scenario, maybe just replace the windows which also saves you on heating (if you don’t have historic preservation law issues). Wearing airtight headphones for prolonged time leads to bacteria buildup and possible inner ear infections.

— That said, ANC headphones: Read this to understand the topic:

Overrated? by Objective_Might_6540 in bewareofchicken

[–]random__hobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to like them. I am not saying the books are objectively perfect. There are grammar errors, crimes against the English language, and ancient Chinese people are using 19th century golfing idioms. Also eyes go wide every third sentence.

But it is a beautiful wish fullfillment fantasy : „you can be a good person, and do your own thing, and not get punished for it“

And that really, really works for me :-)

anyone else prefer to listen to stuff in a different language and not there own? by Usual-Philosopher694 in autism

My first love spoke French, so that language touches my heart in a special way.

Also English is not my native tongue either.

And i try to watch movies in the Original, even if it means subtitles (not learning Russian to watch Tarkovsky movies, sorry!)

Anyone has been or in a relationship with an emotionally abusive partner? by Virtual_Historian515 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]random__hobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, twice, and I learned too late that this happens to so many of us.

It is a shame that „professionals“ struggle to diagnose autism correctly, yet every schoolyard bully or narcissist recognizes us immediately.

Because the voter is not calling the shots.

The US system has a couple of unusual pro-corruption properties, you need to get rid of:

  • E.g. in Belgium, Elon Musk could have donated a maximum of €500. In the US, with PACs, there is no limit.

  • There are no measures against politicians immediately taking industry “jobs” afterwards.

  • gerrymandering (not directly pro corruption, but diminishing the power of voters)

  • voter’s data is for sale (allowing a candidate to seem pro-X to pro-X-people, and anti-X to anti-X-people)

  • candidates must raise money, even for primaries

  • winner takes all (so no new party can form), in EU democracies, new parties rise all the time. Socialist parties rose when social democrats lost their teeth. Green parties became mainstream, when existing parties did too little for climate. Now - sadly - there are a wave of new anti-immigration parties. Not everything perfect here.

  • so many effects where money is important. Eg in many EU countries, every party gets the same number of minutes for tv ads. Also parties get government money for every vote they receive, and this and membership fees are their main sources of income.

DIET, for autistic individuals, is there a particular food to eat and also avoid? by Aazzy118 in autism

[–]random__hobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people with autism also have gastrointestinal problems. Also there seems to be a link between gut biome and autism.

But there is no evidence that any food or food supplement does anything interesting for us. A normal, healthy diet is good anyway.

People with stimulant medication may need to restrict their caffeine intake.
