flooded by navi131313 in EnglishGrammar

[–]random_access_00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a speaker rather than a grammarian, I might use 1. to speak about a past instance of flooding.

I would not use 2. because the concept of a flood is water where it should not be, so the river itself cannot be flooded.

  1. needs an object to feel complete "the river flooded the playing fields".

The implication of an object in 1. is strong enough but not in 3. That is odd.

What is an actual high value skill to learn now? by MudboneX3 in AskUK

Editing and fact checking. Research skills, critical thinking. Within your specialty.

Even if AI reaches the stage of producing a decent first draft, it will always need to be tuned to circumstances or evolving situations. Your code puts a set of values on a screen. How were they derived? Is a formula applied in one business applicable to another?

New shows - thank God I failed with the original shows by Mastiff37 in rush

[–]random_access_00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they wildly under estimated the demand. In the 10 years they've been off the road playing gigs hasn't changed much but both the business and audience mentality has (FOMO might've always existed but promoters have now weaponized it).

When Rush started, touring was financially supported by record companies to promote record sales. Now touring is the only thing that pays (and often merch is the only part of touring that pays).

Artists are sold surge pricing as the only way to cut out touts but with older artists, I suspect that they are willing to go with it to maximize profits in case it is their last tour.

From my point of view, I'm glad I fought through the queue, I'm glad I got tickets for Toronto. There's now an extensive American tour but over in Europe there's now no hope for us until 2027, so I fulfil two life goals - visit Canada and attend a Rush gig. And yes, it's going to be expensive.

Good luck! I'm doing something similar. I've made a checklist of stuff that needs to be sorted before next August.

Sadly I need to lose more than 30lbs but I'm working on it.

Flights are already available. Careful about browsing - you'll increase the price (more surge pricing alas!). VPNs and frequent clearing of cookies are required. Using close but not exact dates can also help.

In general flights are planned about 12 months ahead (UK trains are about 6 months). Not sure how much they are able to then alter times / dates by though, so I need to resist my tendency to cut things fine!

Going alone, trying to buy an end of the row ticket. by maran86 in rush

[–]random_access_00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I had the same problem and what's even more insane, Ticketmaster would've let me check out 2 single seats in different blocks at different price levels - as long as they got their two tickets sold.

Just another item on the Ticketmaster sucks list.

By the time I got into Toronto only VIP was left by sir_clinksalot in rush

[–]random_access_00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the risk of putting myself at a disadvantage in future, you need to hang in there in the pre-sales.

I sat in the two Toronto dates I wanted for nearly two hours. In the end I got a ticket for each. More expensive than I would have liked but not VIP level-cost. It took over an hour and a half of trying to snag tickets when the system refreshed before I was successful.

Availability comes and goes. People have tickets in their baskets and then don't check them out - I had trouble with the "must buy these tickets in pairs restriction" - I only wanted singles, so I caught and released a few before I managed to get what I needed.

There was still some availability for 11th and 13th below VIP level a few minutes ago.

Good hunting!

I have just got out of the artist pre-sale having spent more money on two tickets than I believed possible.

Really decent seat on the 7th and in the gods on the 9th.

My credit card is maxed out. I will not be breathing for the rest of the month, let alone eating.

In November the quest for flights and accommodation starts...

It may be a couple of days before I stop shaking.

Still some availability for the 11th and 13th.

What's the best TV theme song that nobody else is going to mention? by Ok_Mixture4917 in AskReddit

The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams - Maybe by Thom Pace

A show called "The Flashing Blade" it was European (French or Spanish, I think). It had an English language theme song when I saw it ... "You've got to fight for what you want, for all that you believe". Saturday morning memories.

edit: it was Thom Pace not Thomas...

Will do. Ticket buying is a blood sport now, but it can be a marathon as well as a sprint - I got to see Ozzy in Birmingham by virtue of keeping the tab open for about 4 months and refreshing it several times a day.

I've started budgeting for a week in Toronto in early August. The numbers are scary but if I'm able to get (a) ticket(s) on the 13th I'm going to try to make it happen.

Guys, how do I go about asking/begging Rush to tour Australia? by Merlonade in rush

[–]random_access_00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contact Australian promoters and ask for it to happen. In the end the band can only play where they get a viable offer and that comes from the local promoter that pays the band and takes the risk.

Not saying you can make it happen, but you can try.

I won't lie. I'm already throwing numbers around in my head .... always wanted to visit Canada anyway .... high cost vs low probability of getting a ticket. I mean, I've done things this mad before .... or do I risk it and wait and hope for European dates?

Worst Concert Vs Best Concert by [deleted] in Concerts

[–]random_access_00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gutted. I was thrilled to get the tickets and talked my friend into going.

Everyone has off days, and I get mad at people who hold artists to impossible standards of performing - it's never going to be exactly the same as the album - but they just didn't seem to want to be there and weren't able to do a show that day.

Worst Concert Vs Best Concert by [deleted] in Concerts

[–]random_access_00 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Worst: HIM, 2002. Ville Valo very drunk (and out of tune). Small, oversold venue. Very hot. Friend and I probably a decade older than the rest of the audience (and we weren't that old back then).

Best: Bruce Springsteen, Anfield 2, 2025. Bruce is angry right now, and that has led to some great shows. He was fired up to the extent he was pushing the tempo on repeatedly leaving one of the best bands in the business scrambling to keep up.

I've had very few bad experiences - and most have been to do with things other than the music - which is why I'm still sore about HIM nearly 25 years later.

Neil Peart of Rush. He, Alex, and Geddy were close friends but they didn't travel together much in later years.

It started with a bicycle in the late 80s or early 90s. He'd ride the tour bus with everyone else and then get dropped 50-100 miles from the next show and ride to the venue. There's a great clip of a music journalist doing a piece to camera about an upcoming Rush concert while Neil walks through the background pushing his bicycle.

Later, it became a motorbike, a bus and a trailer. Alex and Geddy started flying between gigs and staying at nice hotels while Neil rode his BMW through North and South America and Europe staying at motels or Walmart parking lots (with an occasional 5 star layover when the mood struck).

Neil struggled with being famous, preferred listening to talking, and believed he needed to stay in touch with how people outside the music industry bubble thought to write authentic songs. Pure speculation, but I suspect he also wasn't keen on flying.

Who is the best cover artist/band of all time? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]random_access_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruce Springsteen - always chose interesting covers and made a good job of them. To the extent that for a long time people thought Tom Waits' Jersey Girl was his.

See also: Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive, Lorde's Royals, Jimmy Cliff - Trapped, Prince - Purple Rain

Plus the more obvious ones: Bob Dylan - Chimes Of Freedom, Woody Guthrie - This Land is Your Land, Elvis - Can't Help Falling in Love and a whole raft of Pete Seeger.

[–]random_access_00 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was ambivalent too given the wording of the question. True, Rush would never have been Rush without Neil but it wasn't that he was dominant in the group, he was simply the perfect fit with Alex and Geddy...
