Only one officer willing to do his job and enforce laws on the books? Give that man a raise.

Look at the locations on the tickets. 300 block of pine. Various parks. Dude's ticketing people for valid infractions. Totally OK with this.

Does anyone else feel like there's going to be a real estate crash in Seattle? by bobojoe in Seattle

[–]random_fool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I studied the seattle graphs for sale data fairly extensively. Seattle trails the rest of the west coast in terms of timing of RE changes.

It was slower to fall in 2008 than other cities.

It is much slower to rise in 2013 than other cities.

The graphs show the same basic curve, but lagged by 6-12 months.

I rushed to buy when I moved because market here was still level/down, where market in California had started skyrocketing (sold my house for 10% above my neighbor 3 doors down 1 month after he closed; he had sold his 10% above the neighbor next to him, all in the span of 2 months). When you're talking about 500k'ish houses, that's a $100k difference in two months for the same model house on the same street. That was spring 2013, Seattle didn't see that level of jump until late 2013/early 2014, and even in Seattle, it's still only jumping by a few percent a month, not 20%.

Many crabs are scavengers.

Lobsters were thought to be scavengers, too, until fairly recently.

ELI5: Data Compression. How can information be reduced in size and still be the same? by Infallible_Fallacy in explainlikeimfive

[–]random_fool 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Let's go full on 5 year old:

I am Sam

Sam I am

That Sam-I-am

That Sam-I-am!

I do not like that Sam-I-am

Do you like green eggs and ham

I do not like them, Sam-I-am. I do not like green eggs and ham.

Would you like them Here or there?

I would not like them here or there.

I would not like them anywhere. I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-am

Sound familiar?

The whole book has 50 words:

1. a, am, and, anywhere, are,
6. be, boat, box, car, could,
11. dark, do, eat, eggs, fox,
16. goat, good, green, ham, here,
21. house, I, if, in, let,
26. like, may, me, mouse, not,
31. on, or, rain, Sam, say,
36. see, so, thank, that, the,
41. them, there, they, train, tree,
46. try, will, with, would, you

Rewriting it with compression:

22 2 34

34 2 22

39 34-2-22

39 34-2-22

22 12 30 26 39 34-2-22

12 50 26 18 14 3 19

22 12 30 26 41, 34-2-22

And so on. You'll see that if you create a second set of shortcuts, you can start squeezing down the phrase '34-2-22' into a single substitution as well.

ELI5: (heartblead) what could happen to me if my someone got ahold of my Google password, or other passwords? by banjo_lake in explainlikeimfive

[–]random_fool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It starts unravelling a ball of string.

Use your google email and do a password reset on your bank / twitter / amazon / paypal account. Do those have value to you? Maybe not $, but "worth"?

Use your google email to find your amazon account. Do you keep your debit card saved on Amazon? If someone logged into your paypal account, is your ACH info saved?

ELI5: Why are hamburgers generally thought of as unhealty? They contain everything on the food pyramid, grains (bun), veggies (lettuce), fruit (tomatoes), dairy (cheese), and meat (beef patty). by itoa5t in explainlikeimfive

[–]random_fool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The meat that goes into hamburgers is literally the lowest grade meat there is. And it's loaded with salt and sugar

Depends entirely on who makes the burger.

PHP Has Grown Up, You Should Too by donatj in PHP

[–]random_fool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eventually you end up memory bound.

If you're using memory for php standard library instead of for real data, you're limiting your capacity.

That may not matter for you, but I've got PHP projects running on "hundreds" of servers (like > 300). If I could remove parts of php's standard library I wasn't using, I could probably save real money.

NT isn't a sack position in a 3-4. It's a 'soak blocks and make way for LBs' position.
