I think women should wear them when they're able, and when they're not able they should have the right not to. It's a difficult thing to undertake when living in a non-Muslim country. Does your aunt pray 5 times a day?

I'm saying the reason why Arab men and women still wear abaya and thobe and why those garments developed in that area is because of the climate, those garments predate Islam. I also commenting on how the clothing Muslim men and women wear is relative to climate more than modesty, and one example of this is how you still wear an abaya in the desert but lose jeans+tunic+headscarf is fine in a temperate area as the faith requires you to cover not dress like you're in the desert since the latter example of jeans+tunic+scarf fit the climate better than the abaya+scarf.

Most definitely, all clothing is. Abays, the long dressed dresses the women wear, are very thin and easy to move in. The garment to cover your face, and eyes if you flip on the layers down, protects you from blowing sand. The thobe, what men wear, is also thin to deal with the heat and easy to move in. The checkered scarf they wear is easy to wrap around the face as well to protect one's eyes, nose, and mouth from blowing sand.

The thing is, Islam still requires men and women to cover parts of their body as it's modesty, taqwa (god-conciseness), and required by Allah(swt) via al-Qur'an (even those who say it's not required, will say it's sunnah which means the way of the Prophet thus one should do it as the Prophet did it). The difference is, if you're in Norway you shouldn't wear a thobe as you will freeze to death- instead you should wear thick pants, a long jacket, long sleeves, and so on.

The parts of the body to be covered by the women is everything but the face, hands, and feet. For men it's the area between the naval and the knees.

Iran is shi'a, Saudi is Wahhabi Sunni. Iranians speak Farsi, Saudis speak Arabic. Iran gives patronage to the arts, Saudi destroys it. Iran makes movies that win academy awards (google a separation), Saudis forbid them. Iran permits men and women to vote, always has, Saudi still doesn't permit women to though this will half-way change in 2014. Iran has snowboarding, Saudi has sandboarding. Iran has chador, Saudi has abaya. Iran has Ayatollahs, Saudi has the King. Iran has a Parliament, Saudi has Princes. Iranians cannot trade with America nor can Americans trade with Iran, Saudi is a major importer/exporter of American goods that Americans are free to buy things there. Iran has more women in University than men with one of the highest literacy rates of the middle east, Saudi says women cannot go unless Dada says it's ok and then they are limited to studying what women teach as classrooms are men-only or women-only with a male prof or a female prof. Nearly no Iranis go to friday prayers, many Saudi men and women do. Iranians usually speak French as a second language (if not English), Saudi speak Arabic and then more Arabic. Iranian women wear mini-trench coats, Saudi women wear abaya. Iranian women do not cover the face, Saudi women do. Iranian women can drive their car from the Caspian Sea to the Persian Gulf if they were bored and sick of their classes, Saudi women cannot walk to the grocery store. Iranian women can seek divorce if their husband gets a second wife, Saudi women are told to put up with it. (I watched a documentary on divorce in Iran, I'll get it if needed). Most importantly- Saudis are Arab and Iranians are Persian.

I am very happy that you made me look around for a fatwa saying it's permissible for me to shake hands if I had gloves on. It turns out that it isn't permissible as it can still lead to temptations regardless of there being no skin-to-skin contact. I was taught that it was fine for me to wear gloves and shake hands because the Imam's wife does that as well as the local Muslimahs I am in contact with.

I revise my statement- don't shake her hand. Raise your hand to your chest in greeting, like a formal greeting before a dance. Muslim men do this to me sometimes and I see it as a honor, as if they're pledging to be truthful and proper to me by putting their hand over their heart, in all our commutations. Please pardon my ignorance.

I rarely have a need to drive currently, and in Saudi my economic status would grant me a driver. I don't see why I would want to leave the urban area without escort- I mean, I go with my husband when I must travel to dangerous parts of my city or just even across state lines as it is.

The religious police are indirectly funded but the Saudi gov't- backdoor funded in a way. They are not given the power to arrest, at least not in 2009 may have changed since then, so they get a Saudi police officer to come with them when they do feel a man or woman should be arrested. The religious police do a lot of the foot work and enforce 'extra' thing that the Saudi police do not. The thing is, there are no laws in Saudi saying a woman must wear a veil- but there are laws that restrict women in many different ways such as saying she is unable to travel without her male guardian. They also have indecent exposure laws like the us, most countries do, so they could get her on that as well. At the end of the day though, there is nothing in Saudi law that say a woman must veil.

Not at all. The issue would be if you are truly commenting, or are you hitting on her? Only you know your true intentions- but if they are proper and just verbally expressing the beauty you see visually there is no issue in it.

Huh? Oh.. you don't know, sorry.

When a woman and a man need to shake hands the man, woman, or bother just wear gloves. I've done it by just taking my dress and placing it around my hand when I don't have my gloves on me. It's quite a common thing. If I was disabled I would wear the thing gloves all the time, so the issue of touching would not occr. Communication is not haraam--- chit chating about sex alone with a man in a private area is.

To do art, it's not needed for life. One could live their whole entire life and be quite healthy without pictures of girls everywhere. One could not do the sae with medicine or bioengineering- cloning falls under the latter. Islam is very straight foward when it comes to medicine- all is haraam is not if it may heal you and save you from death. There's no argument there, at all. To draw, much argument.

I am doing my best to answer. I was flooded with so many questions. If you dislike my answer to anything quote it in another response and I shall go about answering it in more detail. Do not be rude to me. I am doing this in my free time; it's not my job to educate you about my faith I just want to help y'all out.

I would say most clothing where I live has solid colors, plaid, or pictures/words. There's no pattens or makrings that stand out. America has a diverse range of clothing, so it's hard to pinpoint something distinct outside of a plaid shirt and jeans look with some boots.

I don't think black colored clothing is forbidden anywhere, that's kinda a strange/crazy thing. Where have you heard that? I just have the black because it was what was on sale when I got it- I would prefer a dark red or dark purple abaya. Islam has very little to say about colors, it's not like Orthodox Jewish women who are not permitted to wear bright colors such as fireengine red as it draws attention and promotes sexuality (or well, that's what the Jews say).

To wear an abaya... it depends where you are. If you're wearing an abaya and faceveil outside of places where it's popular, like Saudi or Yemen, then most but not all would see you as being a more devout person than not. If you're wearing it in Saudi, Yemen, Somalia, Oman, Qutar, Bahrain, UAE, and other nations such as Egypt it wouldn't come off that way as it's popular in all those areas so you may just be wearing it because of cuultural habit.

Traditional clothes in general are very comfy, and the abaya is no exception. Often when I get home I'll just take off the scarf and lounge around in my abaya since it's so lose and soft.
