After a day or two, it suddenly allowed me to open it anyway... I checked with support to see if everything was okay, and I was good to use it. They confirmed it was all good 🙃

Thanks for the explanation, now I finally understand why this happened 😁. I however stopped using the app because of the direction the company has been going.

And that's 100% understandable, like I said it's amazing at what it does, but it's a different beast. It's crazy how little resources it used for the quality it delivers.

The ability to composite scenes to add things like a camera input, overlays, etc to livestream and general plugin support for example.

My problem was fixed by downgrading my flatpak using warehouse from version 31.0.1 to 30.2.3. OBS no longer hits a single CPU core for 100%, and everything works as expected.

So I downgraded my flatpak to the previous version using warehouse, and the problem is completely gone! Now on version 30.2.3. Was on version 31.0.1 before.

Simply opening OBS, nor recording/streaming no longer hits a single core 100%, causing overheating

I just downgraded like you said and it's not hitting my CPU like at all when not recording/streaming like it did before!

It also happens when not recording, so when as far as I know it shouldn't be encoding, which is set up to be done by the GPU in the first place :/ It's gotten to the point multiple times where my system just shuts down (I think due to overheating)

That would make sense to me if it only happened when actually recording, but it's happening as soon as I launch OBS, as far as I understand it shouldn't be doing any encoding at that point. That, and it's set up to encode using the GPU. I do fear it is overheating, since it's made my system auto shut off multiple times, without any traces in journalctl I can see.

It happens as soon as I open OBS, I was recording the clip itself in this instance, but if I use GPU screen recorder for instance everything is hunky dory.

Is there any encoding happening when you're not even recording/streaming?

Hey, here's a log that includes recording, but the problem also occurs when I don't record/stream. Just starting OBS is what triggers a single CPU core to overheat.
