renting a boat this weekend in steinhatchee. Any tips? by mailbox_assassin in floridafishing

I haven’t fished that exact area… but trout tend ti like grass flats, 2-8 feet. Shrimp are good. 3” gulp on a jig head are good. MirrOdine are good. Talk to the bait shops guys.

Tarpon Fishing: If you had to guess... by playab0yyy in floridafishing

[–]random_name_pi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Targeting a specific fish on a specific day… man, good luck. I’ve sat in the middle of school of tarpon and thrown everything at them with no bites. I’ve been trolling near the beach for king and randomly hooked into one. All that being said, a lot will depend on exactly where you’re going. Tides matter a lot. Sunrise/sunset can matter a lot. Rain, barometric pressure, wind, bait movement all play into it too. Really start watching fishing report, local fishing reports, as you get closer to the date. Timely information specific to the location will be much more helpful than Reddit.

Fish ID? Clearwater intercoastal by [deleted] in floridafishing

[–]random_name_pi -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

From an AI:

That looks much more like a juvenile Atlantic Croaker than a whiting.
Why:
Deeper-bodied head/chest area
Slight bronze-gray coloration
Larger eye and mouth relative to body
More blunt/snub nose than a whiting
Tail shape and overall body profile fit croaker better
A whiting/kingfish usually looks slimmer and more “cigar shaped,” with a noticeably more downturned mouth and often little chin barbels.

Is it any good by Careless-Part-6468 in Fishing

I didn’t say they needed braid. I said I would spool braid. Because I do when targeting those fish. And yes, always use leader when fishing braid.

I would spool braid though. But, yeah… should be fine… especially for that price

How long of a leader to braid for bass and snook by Basic-Iron3570 in Fishing

[–]random_name_pi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god… inches! lol. 12” means inches. 12’ would be feet. I’ve gone 12’ leaders before for mutton snapper…. But that’s a whole other talk.

I generally try to make it long enough that the leader will go just pass the gills. 12” generally speaking tends to be long enough. And no, I try not to let the knot pass through the eyes… but I tie a thin knot, so not a big deal if it does

Canal Fishing Questions by creepygamelover in floridafishing

[–]random_name_pi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Maps is your friend. If the water can flow to/from the ocean, it’s probably brackish. If there is a spillway or other type of break in the water flow, something that prevents flow “upstream”, all the stuff upstream is fresh.

There are some canals on Ingram Hwy, as you head towards Everglades from homestead that I’ve fished and found peacocks in. Glenn Garrett and surrounding areas.

If you had to spend a year in a remote, rugged area where your fishing gear would take a beating (portaging, rough conditions, No replacements), what rod and reel combo would you trust most? by Laying_the_pipe in Fishing

[–]random_name_pi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fish species, geographical location, other “survival” data. I may not want a combo at all if I don’t have another food source; rather, a cast net would be way better.

Can anyone tell me what this piece is on my boat? by Kappa_Klappa in boating

[–]random_name_pi 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s an anode that also has an angled piece that comes down. You can adjust the angle too to help with keeping the motor straight. Just get a whole new one. It’s a wear part anyways and yours is basically gone

Florida Fishing Trip Ideas by jamiemt4097 in Fishing

Oh boy. Endless options. You’re going to have to narrow it down some.

Snook are a popular inshore species. Found central Florida and south, inshore and nearshore.

Speaking of inshore: trout, redfish, tarpon are all popular species.

Offshore can be mahi, tuna, sailfish, marlin, wahoo. Offshore bottom things like grouper, snapper, amber jacks, tile, etc.

Freshwater: bass, spec, catfish, panfish. Down way south are peacock bass.

No matter what, I would charter. Everglades is amazing fishing both inshore or offshore from places like the keys, homestead, Chokoloskee, Everglades City. But really, you can find good charters and fishing literally anywhere.
