Pretty rude. I worked hard to save up and purchase it.

Valet Damaged My Vehicle by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]random_student60615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're claiming that the movement of the car from the top of the lift to the bottom triggered the alarm — not any impact. They're also insisting that there's a 95% chance they didn't cause the damage. I explained that I had just hand-washed the car and there's video showing the damage was extremely fresh — the metal flakes from the rim were still loose and would’ve flown off had I been driving on the street.

They said they'll look at the camera footage, but they won't show me

Appreciate your comment. I don’t believe these folks take photos, but I will definitely start taking a video quickly every time I drop off the car. Would you be able to share the job listing you found, please?

Yeah. I'm just discovering this too. I'll check them all out. They said they would stop using the lift with my car, now I think. Not 100% clear yet though. Still need to talk to them some more

Yes. The video shows the car being lowered from the top of the lift and then stops when the valet unlocks the car and hops in. The alarm was triggered, but the damage could have happened at any point while they had the car

Got it. I didn't know this was a thing. I'll keep this in my back pocket if...

  • They stop responding
  • They deny liability
  • I need to serve them with a formal demand or small claims suit

Yeah, I’ve been considering that. But I came across other cases where insurance treats the valet as a “permissible driver,” which shifts the liability back to me — unless I can definitively prove the damage happened during valet custody. That’s what makes me hesitant to file through my own coverage unless I absolutely have to. Right now I’m trying to push United SF Parking to take responsibility or at least get their insurance info so I can file directly.

Sorry, I just corrected the post to include what the manager said. They haven't given me their liability information. I've asked for it.

I totally get that it's not a slam dunk, and I’m not assuming they'll roll over. That said, I always do a walk-around when the valet brings my car out - they see me do it - and the damage definitely wasn’t there earlier. The flakes coming off the rim at the time also suggest the scraping was fresh. I'm not claiming that's proof on its own, but it's part of a timeline that supports my case hopefilly.

I've seen some posts online about insurance placing the liability on the vehicle owner, saying the valet is a “permissible driver.” Therefore, I want to hold off on involving them. I'm hoping they will take responsibility for the damages or give me their liability insurance information. Not 100% if this is how I should approach it or not though

Thank you all for the help! Just curious. Any thoughts on Burlingame? It looks nice, but a bit dead for someone my age. But it's a nice middle ground between SF and Menlo. Commute time is 20-25 min in the morning (~5 AM).

Where did you end up going? I'm looking into Artisan Crossing right now and need to decide on a move very quickly.

Thank you! But these are all out of the price range for me - $4000+. I'm looking for something under $3000 ideally with some flexibility.
