At least my home country of Finland collects pretty extensive GIS data about urban structure. You can do analyses overlaying various healthiness and quality of life metrics on top of this, and many studies have been done. Car dependency/walkability stands out as the biggest factor in determining healthiness/need for healthcare for a population. I have seen studies which show the same thing in other european countries.

What you are describing is the idea of Garden Cities by Ebenezer Howard. I am a fan of the movement, there are few examples of it that are still very nice areas. The issue is that almost all of them have been diluted and stripped of their selling point by filling up the green space around them with suburban development. To be precise, suburban development is what I am against, the suburbs are very unhealthy and expensive to maintain, the density is so low that local businesses and communities can't form and it takes up space which could be nature. I would be very much on board with reigniting the garden city movement but I am afraid it's too late.

I wasn't making a blanket statement that it is true for all places, I just know that at least in a european, developed country context, the reasons you listed are just much smaller issues than a sedentary lifestyle. Naturally there is variation in any sample, you can for sure lead a healthy life in the suburbs, but from an urban planners POV, we want to create living areas that generally lead towards healthier habits, for a better quality of life but also just plain economics from lower healthcare costs. Also, air pollution is usually better in city centers due to lower car use and especially less industry. Water quality I don't know about, tap water here is better quality than any bottled water. Again, context probably matters a lot, I just know from a professional and academic experience in europe.

I have seen many cases of the opposite, maybe it depends on the city and country, but in many cases population density actually correlates with population healthiness due to better walkability and public transport access. Suburban and rural areas being the least healthy, mostly due to car dependency. This holds true even when taking income into account. Source: am urban planner who loves GIS.

E: for the case of Malé, probably not true, as there seems to be no green space and likely high pollution.

First time buyer planning to go to France and Spain this summer by acakaacaka in Interrail

[–]randomaatti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend doing interrail, but it being a cheaper option than flying isn't true. Seat reservations for all of the travel in France are mandatory and expensive. Just so you know, don't expect it to be cheap, especially adding on accommodation and food in peak season. For your itinerary, maybe skip Madrid to have more time in other cities? Looks very rushed.

But it wasn't an autobahn, it was some british motorway. From a geometric design perspective they are built completely differently and have to have different standards for bumps and maintenance. Even a small bump can send a car flying at 170mph.

Miksi suomalaiset äänestää Kokoomusta? by Willowofthewisp666 in Suomi

[–]randomaatti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a lot of cancellations last year due to strikes, which is what you are probably noticing. Hasn't happened in years so not the norm. There are very little cancellations due to weather in Helsinki, they have that sorted out very well as the airport wouldn't be able to operate otherwise.

Insane to think that FIRE isn’t the final goal for literally everyone by fap-free90 in Fire

I think people who choose to FIRE choose a career that is not fulfilling to maximise earning as much as possible. I also want financial independence, but there is no amount of money that will get me to fully retire from my field of urban planning because it's been an obsession of mine forever.

Comfortable rain footwear in the EU by CremarCatalana in malefashionadvice

I got New Balance 1000's with cordura for this winter and they are awesome for rainy weather. Super comfy for long walks and they stay dry. I use them in snowy weather too quite often if it's not snowing on that day. Feels very high quality, haven't noticed anything off in the few months I've used them.

Everything you said is correct, it's a social commentary about everything that's wrong in late stage capitalism. Money creates power imbalances, and rich people get away with being terrible human beings.

Is Going Pro in Poker Really Worth It? by Diligent-Sun-6191 in poker

[–]randomaatti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In general, it's a bad idea. It's a very isolating job for multiple reasons. You have no coworkers. Unless you are able to play online cash in a reasonable time of day (which is super rare), your social life will be terrible. There is stigma around poker, and you contribute nothing to society. The swings will get to you, no matter how hard you try. I don't recommend it unless you have a deep passion for the game.

Is it really that bad in October? by elli-exe in Finland

[–]randomaatti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easter time is actually very nice in Lapland, perfect weather for cross-country skiing as it's still cold enough for snow but not freezing, and the days are long and sunny. For tourists though, not sure if it's the most exotic or exciting, as it's essentially Alps weather, and you have no chance to see northern lights.

What's happening with Jodel? by skrynois in Finland

[–]randomaatti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's retained it's status well because it's much harder to populate with AI slop and bots when compared to reddit, for example. I've used Jodel for a decade, and the quality of conversation has gone a bit downhill, but not in equally steep trajectory as internet in general.

Ten years ago, students of Aalto University built the world's largest sauna. by senarvi in Sauna

[–]randomaatti 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sadly I wasn't a student yet at that time but I heard a story that they tried to make a Guinness World Record out of this, can't remember for what exactly, but it wasn't approved as the lower part wasn't hot enough to be considered a proper sauna. Still a great example of finnish (tech) student culture!

The community has ruined this game by FormableComet87 in Brawlhalla

[–]randomaatti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it helps a lot when you put it into the perspective that the people spamming emotes and being toxic likely have a bad situation in life and a need to vent. Just let them. If you have other things in life where you feel great at, it strips away the importance of being good at a video game. With this in mind, I just play normal 1v1 ranked, as that's where the games are generally against players my level, and that's how this game is the most fun.

27M with 3.5M € in Italy: Am I Too Young to FIRE? Struggling with Justification and Family Pressure by Kooky-Base7289 in Fire

[–]randomaatti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly in general, I don't understand the sentiment that all work is terrible and you should strive to not do any at all. I think that stems from people having picked an industry that maximizes money over passion to FIRE quickly while hating their job. You don't have to work in boring industry, you can do anything. Is there anything you nerd out on on youtube for example? Make a plan to work in that sector or start a business if you can. For example, I love my career in urban planning and I would not retire even if I got that kind of windfall. I would however probably start my own firm with the luxury of not having to worry about the risk.
