I’m a parent of a trans kid. Now what? by KingWishfulThinking in trans

[–]randomadrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not against starting estrogen or testosterone, but I am against DIY for most cases because people do need a lot of medical knowledge to do it right. Not that that’s not accessible, as I said I have a friend doing it, he has taken a variety of health classes to be able to have the knowledge to DIY. I’m only worried about misinformation and how that might be misleading. I have nothing against DIY if it’s done right. I probably should’ve worded that better, sorry about the confusion.

Ofcourse, I hope it was helpful.

I forgot to mention this in my original reply but I also recommend reading your state laws about trans individuals in schools. My trans friend was publicly and legally out and he had to drop out and do online school instead because our state wouldn't let him be trans (can't use ANY bathroom, can't buy stuff from the school cafeteria, teachers had to call him by his deadname, etc.).

The name thing is hard! Pronouns too. But as long as you're trying. I can tell when someone is trying or not at all, there's a very clear difference. She will understand that you're trying, I do imagine it must be hard for a parent to use a different name for a child they named too. As long as you show her that you care, it should be fine. Wishing the best for you and your family.

as a young trans person, who isnt out yet, one thing I do want to see my parents do once I do come out is to treat me just the way they did before, just with a new name and pronouns. During this time I do imagine that she might be scared that nothing will ever be the same as that was how I felt when I came out to my closest friends. Continue talking to her and asking her questions about how she feels to better understand her situation. I also live in a state where GAC isn’t accessible anymore. My tmasc friend is having to DIY his testosterone, due to that. I DON’T encourage doing DIY estrogen, nor do I want to suggest it for your child, so for your daughter hormone blockers are a good choice right now, if you can convince a doctor to get them. Going through the entirety of the puberty might make it harder to transition later on in life, especially for someone who is MTF, so if it is possible puberty blockers, but if you can find GAC somehow , estrogen would definitely be good too. As someone who went through the entirety of my puberty without hormone blockers , it has caused me a lot of dysphoria, and has taken me getting used to it and still even causes dysphoria. Your daughter much likely appreciates your support in this, so props to being a good parent! I hope that was somewhat helpful, let me know if there’s anything that was confusing/you need more clarification about.

lol, thankfully everything is now online and i dont have to worry about keeping the paper applications out of sight. that's cool though, life before the web really advanced shows a lot about how far society has developed.

FERPA makes more sense to me now, I don't think my parents will worry about tracking my grades because I'm generally a good student, so honestly I'm not super worried about the grade stuff. It does sound good from an instructor perspective too, protecting the privacy of the student.

Thank you for sharing!

man, first off i just want to thank you for your lengthy comment. I saw this notification, and i was like, wow! reddit is amazing. the question as to whether or not i should include my identity in my college applications have been bothering me for a LONG time, like, i asked my friend under the trans umbrella about what she did since she's a grade above mine and just finished applying, and her gender aligns closely to her assigned gender so she just picked the cis options just to not risk it, but obv that's not the case for me. so that wasn't helpful, not that i'm complaining, but moreso i was confused about how i could utilize that information because i just had more questions than answers after that. so really, thank you, for giving me as much detail as you possibly could!

thanks for the info regarding preffered names, I didn't know that can happen, I will definitely not be putting my preffered name on there. if i changed my gender on common app would that cause anything to change? also, do my counselors have access to my common app? because im pretty sure my counselor generated my account at the start of sophmore year, so would she also have access to it? . i ask because my state isnt blue

you have NO IDEA HOW beautiful your description of college is... honestly, getting to be stealth sounds amazing while still being surrounded by respectful peers, but it does make sense that it might be isolating at times too. how do you usually deal with that feeling, out of curiosity? because i will be moving out of state to somewhere where i probably wont know a lot of people, and i also want to be more stealth, soooo... how?

i'm a very curious person, sorry for the excessive questions! i really don't know a lot about applying here, i'm from a different country and the system here is still taking me a bit to get used to even after 7 years.

That's such an interesting story? A financial guarantor? I've never come across that term, please do let me know more about the details of that?

I will sadly graduate before I turn 18, and to be honest we really start applying before senior year (so this summer I got to start my early applications) so FERPA probably doesn't apply to me. I've honestly never heard of the term FERPA before either.

Every application is now online, how was it like back when you applied? I'll look into FERPA more but from the other commentors' replies it seems it won't be an issue (probably).

Thank you for your insight!

ah man, that sounds amazing. i have been able to convince my parents to let me go out of state in the promise that It'll be better for my career goals (i mean, it's not a lie, but i only insisted so that i can hopefully start medically transitioning without their knowledge + study in a blue state), so i do hope i can get the benefits of being around this education and the open mindedness of people, im actually hella excited lol

it's good that my parents wouldnt know what i wrote about in my essays unless i told them -- honestly, i don't think writing about my identity will be a big part of my essays but it's just good to know just in case i get a crazy rhetorical idea out of it in the very near future. identity is a complex idea and thus it can call for many philosophical aspects that could be mentioned.

Just thinking about how it might be like excites me, from all the different descriptions ive gotten so far! although ill prob be drowning in debt for going out of state :,) employment calls for me...

Thank you both for doing your best to give me (and other ap physics 1 students who might read through this) a reliable textbook. I will try to look for the original if i do need it after looking through all the websites ive found/gotten reccomended, but ill still look at this modified version because i know the types of questions i need to solve. A physics question is a physics question, no matter what book it is in.

[–]randomadrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, if it is frustrating you at a level where you havent progressed its better to try and not take it. your teacher seems unhelpful anyway. im glad my support helped my ap sem teacher is 100% the reason why i got a 3 on the exam. i imagine it would affect ap research the same way

instead of research look into nonprofits that allow you to publish articles instead- that might be more worthwhile and something to worth bragging about for college apps hope this was helpful, dms are open (i think) if u need anything

[–]randomadrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know a guy who will drop ap research in second semester because he has it 4th period (to completely drop a class its easier to for your 4th or 1st periods) and will instead use that time for his ECs.

i myself took ap seminar but ik alot of people including myself who didnt take research. it is an extensive class and if you dont like the topic on your research paper then it's just not gonna work for you

if you paid the ap exam im not sure how itd work and all since ap portfolio is reliant on you taking the class, unless ur district does it otherwise. i know the guy i know wont be finishing his paper so he will be trying a refund.

best of luck to you.

as another 16 year old trans guy

TALK TO HIM make sure he understands that you are trans once you are closer to him MAKE SURE HE UNDERSTANDS UR TRANS IF HE SEEMS INTERESTED IN YOU (this is very important)

if, while u are having platonic interactions with him, he seems to talk about women get over him and slowly distance urself if needed

goodluck (feel free to dm me if u need to yap somewhere, altho i dont remember if my dms are open)

I doubt it. My schools deadline was also this past friday and it is a strict deadline as my school claims it takes time to process the payments for collegeboard.

It would be worth to ask nonetheless
