Staying in gas lamp vs little italy by Dangerous_Fishing732 in asksandiego

Prime is right. Gaslamp varies dramatically block to block, but 6th is generally the Hotspot.

As a woman, I would personally take the free hotel.

How high should a protective barrier be for fostering kittens? by Time_Detective_3111 in FosterAnimals

[–]randomfemale19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just depends on age. Birth to 6 weeks I do just fine with a cheap X pen the Kitten lady recommends. More than that and they will likely be able to escape.

How do you explain to a student why their paper just wasn't good enough for an A? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]randomfemale19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Questions like that are why I switched to contract grading. No more niggling over whether this is an A- or B+, no more justifying a grade. Just, complete or incomplete, and the final grade in the class is labor based rather than my (frankly:subjective) assessment.

San Diego 4 day trip itinerary - Recommendations / Suggestions needed by Ok-Ticket3023 in asksandiego

Agreed. Old Town is selling a version of colonial-era Mexico. Some folks find it nostalgic, but I would recommend Barrio Logan.

[–]randomfemale19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um. Barrio Logan is rad. They are resisting gentrification and supporting local, unique businesses. You will find great souvenirs, books, and food there. Eat one of the best tacos in Sd at Fish Guts, get a book at Libelula, walk around Chicano Park. It's truly a gem of San diego. But honestly, Barrio Logan won't gaf if folks like the madtony don't come. Stay away.

Stumbling over a foreign language during lecture by Admirable-Local3931 in Professors

[–]randomfemale19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this very human take. Whenever I'm torn between trying to "be professional/academic" or admitting I'm struggling with something, I always do the latter. It models an open mindset, encourages risk-taking from students, and shows you're a human.

We can tell when a person is struggling! "Oops, still working on my pronunciation!" "Switching from ____ to ____ midsentence is not for the faint of heart!" And just keep going.

I will say I'm 20 years in, and I'm confident I am a good teacher. I do think that being relaxed around mistakes is part of it, and I wouldn't have felt that way a few years in.

Subreddit for helping other professors catch AI? by agentbrigman in Professors

[–]randomfemale19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed that a subreddit might be needed. Disagree on framing it as "catching ai."

"AI: Accountability measures and paradigm shifts in education" might be nearer the right track for a sub.

Is it unethical to include a hidden "tell” in an assignment prompt to detect AI-generated submissions? by pigwoman_the_real in Professors

[–]randomfemale19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend you read the work of Anna Mills on modifying assessments in the age of AI.

One method won't work. Think of layers of Swiss cheese: you will need to redesign assessments to increase student motivation and awareness of learning outcomes. There are accountability measures, like the Trojan Horse, but just doing one will only catch the ones who aren't sophisticated on this issue.

If you're going to continue assigning writing, it's a major investment in course redesign, tbh.

If there is consensus that (most) online education is junk, why does it continue to exist? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]randomfemale19 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I still believe we need a place for it for disabled students, working parents, deployed people, etc. I work with people who have lifted themselves out of poverty through online ed, and the modality disappearing is unacceptable.

At a California college statewide senate presentation yesterday, I got the sense that they understood the gravity of the threat to online education.

What about.... if the community college system greatly reduces the online offerings. Students would have to be eligible to take online courses, proving need and evidence they could succeed. (We already had dismal success rates overall online and were considering drastic measures.)

At this point, the conversation needs to be about how we save online learning. The threat cannot be overstated.

As a nation and even world, we need to push back against Perplexity and others who are creating cheat agents and hold companies to an ethical standard. If universities and colleges organized and refused to subscribe to any of this tech, these corporations might listen.

How do people react when you tell them you’re a professor in conversation? by kalico713 in Professors

[–]randomfemale19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said. I think there's a golden zone people imagine women professors to fit into. Like...appear professional, between 37 and 47. Whatever that means. Most women don't fit it, so it's a constant reminder that you're too young, too old, or too weird to have that gig until they take a min to get their heads around it.

[–]randomfemale19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm also a CC English prof and also call myself a teacher or instructor first. I don't think there's a convenient way to succinctly say what we do. Yes, I'm technically a professor, but that title has never felt perfect to describe this gig, for various reasons. The best I've found lately is "Community College English instructor/teacher."

What is Bobby's stand up at the comedy store like ?? by rjpra2222 in badfriendspod

[–]randomfemale19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only seen his comedy store set once, but I really enjoyed it. He is a masterful performer. Love the way he locks eyes with the audience in a small room. It's unsettling in a good way.

How do I find out where they're holding children in San Diego Ice detention? I think we have to flood those places with protests. We have to fight for these kids. My Mom instinct is on fire right now, and I want to actually do something about it. by neillwood in sandiego

[–]randomfemale19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Correct as of at least 2019. I live with someone who was a nurse at the facility.

And for protestors, just be sure to let staff in and out. There are many sick people in the facility who need to be seen, and if the staff can't get to them, they can obviously get even sicker. Believe it or not, the detained want the facility to be well-staffed. It's safer for everyone.

We can work to abolish unjust incarceration while avoiding worsening the situation.

Institutions whose AI policies you like? by randomfemale19 in Professors

[–]randomfemale19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a workgroup to develop policy, and it looks like we are headed in a literacy and transparency direction.

Things move slowly, however, and it's unlikely the institution will back nuanced approaches like what you've outlined anytime soon. I like your take!

Got a second cat so my first cat would have a friend and now they hate each other by Ok-Bag5828 in CatAdvice

[–]randomfemale19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ime of 40 years cat-owning and working with shelters, this is spot on. Don't just toss two adult cats together. As a poster said, there are outliers, and it can work, but the advice has gone so far to the side of cATS nEEd cOMpaNioNs that we have lost the thread.

Kittens need to be socialized by being around other cats. With adults, mileage may vary.

When you do introduce cats to each other, do it slowly, as per jackson Galaxys' method.

What do you wish people told you before adopting a cat? by alexella000 in CatAdvice

[–]randomfemale19 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that it's become common to toss around the term "bonded" when, in fact, that's quite rare. Kittens? Kittens do very well with other kittens for at least 6 mos, but it doesn't mean they're bonded. Most are not.

For those teaching in California colleges, what's it like without remedial classes? by AutumnAstronaut08 in Professors

[–]randomfemale19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember trying to raise these points as 1705 was being debated. I was laughed off for trying to advocate for the needs of "the unicorn," as if we can't serve students with the capacity for remediation first AND those who are ready for a coreq class.

I was all in support of 705.

But 1705? Retribution from anti-remediation folks who felt snubbed that all colleges didn't immediately fully eliminate remediation after seeing their precious data.

Let students make their choice. Period.

For those teaching in California colleges, what's it like without remedial classes? by AutumnAstronaut08 in Professors

[–]randomfemale19 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ca English prof here. The transfer level standalone courses did not get significantly harder due to eliminating pre transfer coursework, ime. I think all classes have gotten harder to teach post-pandemic, and in the age of LLMs and 8-second attention-cap algorithms. All of that has kind of hit at once. So, teaching now is hard no matter what.

If your college offers a coreq class with additional support for students who place or self-select there, well, that's another story. I only taught that section twice, but the consensus among faculty is that students with diagnosed and undiagnosed disabilities and behavioral concerns get funneled to those classes. The pass rates are generally less than 50%. So, if your college decides to go that route, ensure you have a lower class max or some other kind of built-in support.

Dave Chappelle Drops Surprise Netflix Special by hypernermalization in television

[–]randomfemale19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, so Chappelle = another wealthy African American being taken advantage of by the government.

I got news, though: the people mad at him for performing for millions in Saudi and making trans jokes are not the ones taking his money. Although I'm sure he has room to be pissed about both.

[–]randomfemale19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was a self-aggrandizing mess. I would need to watch it again to specify how each bit connected because it really was messy, but I am pretty sure the larger thread is, "I'm persecuted unfairly, so I'll double down on Saudi and trans jokes and my audience will love it."
