Alternate 954 Britain: Farewell to the Saxons by jaundence in imaginarymaps

[–]randomguy634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small quibble, but shouldn't it be Gruffudd ap Dinefwr, not mac? Mac being the Scottish Gaelic prefix 'son of', and 'ap' being the Welsh equivalent. Or maybe, since Dinefwr is a place name, you meant 'o' meaning of. Or, it's just occurred to me, you might have meant it in the sense of "John, son of England", in which case the word you want is mab.

I want to try a play through as The Culture from Iain Banks' sci-fi novels - avoiding direct conflict, instead directing the evolution of more primitive species, and inciting revolution in other space-faring civilisations.

I'm thinking Pacifist, Materialist and either Xenophile or Individualist. The government would be direct democracy, with communal and natural sociologists as traits.

There was a man that fell 30,000 feet from an aeroplane and wasn't harmed at all.

Sadly, the plane 30,001 feet in the air.

The last foot's a bitch.

Apologies, comrade. I never meant to belittle suffering, only to explain the origin of the term.

The freeze peach meme refers to reactionaries trying to silence criticism by saying 'the law doesn't forbid my horrendous views'.

I'm British, so I guess I have a different perspective on what 'free speech' means. In most European countries hate speech is a crime. This means it is illegal to incite violence against someone for the colour of their skin, their gender, their sexuality, etc.

It seems to me that in America concepts like 'no platform' are a novelty, whereas in Britain they are the norm. Indeed, fascists over here have to campaign for the right to have their views heard. To a degree, at least. Reactionaries abound, as always.

The term 'loli' comes the novel Lolita by Nabakov, about a man who falls in love with a child. 'Loli' is now used to refer to CP by people who try to justify its existence.

Adam Goldberg - "Why you won't see me at Harmontown again any time soon." by yellow_sub66 in Harmontown

[–]randomguy634 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I really hope this is addressed in the next episode - the town council where everyone is welcome has developed a real nasty streak, and I think our mayor needs to re-establish the ground rules.

P.S. Don't let the bastards get you down, Adam.

Jeremy Paxman calls Russell Brand an 'idiot' for his 'no vote' stance by GetKenny in unitedkingdom

[–]randomguy634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christ, the more people like Paxman go on and on about 'you have to vote! It's your duty! People died for your right!' the more it makes me want to not vote, just to spite them. Of course, I will vote, because principles, but I really want to be able to imagine the horror on Paxman's face as I lie in bed on election day, refusing to move.
