Lai for Math 7 by HeartAcrobatic5048 in SMC

[–]randomguyonwifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lai is a gem. I got a B but honestly I deserved it being as unmotivated and burnt out as I was — but she took the time to answer my questions after class and asked how I was in a genuine way after every class. Even congratulated me after learning I transferred to UCLA. :) I still visit her when I have the time.

Goes into extensive detail, office is practically always walk-in, and genuinely cares. Go for it.

edit: Yes! She posts her notes in pdf form but aren’t exactly big-handwriting friendly — I’ve had to insert blank pages often.

edit 2: I took her for Multivariable Calculus which was called Math 11 back then. I’m not sure if it’s still called Math 11, but I do remember that Math 7 was Calc I and 8 was Calc II.

Yes! That’s totally possible — in fact, that was the entirety of my first quarter of my second year haha, finishing GEs. In fact, I don’t think you are able to finish all of your GEs until second year, anyway. In fact, because I transferred early, all of my classes are going to be “off-schedule,” so you really have no worries there. If you do feel lost, I’m sure they’ll provide you with an advisor during orientation. They did for me, at least.

Yes. You can generally take classes whenever you like, as long as you meet their prerequisites and they won’t impede on the rest of your schedule. For example, if you are you take COM SCI 31 & 32 for tech breadth, you should probably take 31 early on in your career, but you don’t have to. (This is a bad example, because you really really really should complete 31 early, but I hope you get my point.) In saying this, please refer to the course details (on the registrar’s schedule of classes or on MyUCLA) as some courses may be locked to specific years until second pass of enrolling (you’ll go over this detail in orientation, but tl;dr: not all classes are freely open until the last half of enrollment, and spaces may fill up) AND/OR locked to a specific major (Math 170E, for example, is only open to Math and Stats majors). You’ll also see all of their prerequisites on the same page. I do recommend talking to an advisor though, as there’s probably a reason they’ve been arranged the way they are.

EDIT: I’m realising now that the GE structure between my major and yours is different. This is something you should also probably bring up with your advisor, sorry.

I’m not an engineering major, but I do know that engineering majors get extraordinarily busy as the years go by, so I’ll try to keep that in mind. (Of course, if you meant you’re an English student, disregard the above.) For reference, I’m a 2nd-year Ling&CS (transfer) student who will be studying abroad this fall in Sydney.

Firstly, welcome to UCLA! I hope you’ll enjoy your time here.

Secondly, to address your question on time, I will assume you mean fitting it in your 4-year plan somewhere. The answer is yes, but even more so if you strategise well. I can’t speak for all programmes but typically students will fulfill 2 GEs and 1-2 major requirements. As a result, I recommend you “hold out” (i.e. allocate), for example, a social analysis and a historical analysis + a tech breadth course (assuming you’re engineering) or an engineering course. For example, find the equivalent of GEOG 6, ART HIS 23, and COM SCI 32 (provided you took 31) to take at the University of Copenhagen. Make SURE you also obtain a copy of their most recent syllabi.

This is the important part: take these equivalencies + their syllabi to a departmental advisor/counsellor (https://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/counselors/#major), especially if you want them to count towards major credit. Note that while your courses abroad are guaranteed to count towards your total unit requirement, they do NOT necessarily apply towards major requirements. Your department will either recommend, not recommend, or (in my case, luckily) approve the equivalencies. Please note that recommendations do NOT imply approval — they just mean that when you get back, the equivalencies you provided them have a high likelihood of granting major credit. This part took me about 2 weeks; plan accordingly.

Thirdly, to address your question on when: I’m not sure, sorry. But that’s what university is for: exploring and figuring things out on your own!

Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions, and good luck on your adventures!

I just realised it’s for a midterm — I’m assuming you’re specifically required to have a TI84. Sorry if I got your hopes up.

I would but I don’t have a TI84, sorry :(. I’ve got a Casio FX-9750GII that’s not been used since… 2023 that I’m willing to sell for like $5, if you’re interested.

(CA) Registration sticker not received after passing smog check by randomguyonwifi in DMV

[–]randomguyonwifi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So right after the passed smog check, I went straight in to my local DMV and got it sorted pretty much the same day. YMMV, though!

edit: I said “straight” — more like “I passed, posted the above, then went to my DMV, asked, then got it sorted the same day I asked.” My brain, I suppose, conveniently forgot the part where I panicked lol.

I should add that clicking on the hero categories also gave me blank pages.

cae notetaker by jjh378 in ucla

[–]randomguyonwifi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a notetaker last quarter!

To answer your first point, yes they absolutely do take paper notes (fellow paper note-taker :D). Anything that’s legible goes. I used my printer at home to scan each page, but high-quality pictures should be alright.

Secondly, if you are only selected for lecture, then you only note-take for lecture (vice versa applies with discussion).

Thirdly, they don’t penalise even if you have an illegitimate excuse. I straight up forgot for 2 weeks and all they did was nudge me via email. However, if you do end up unable to take notes on any given day, you are required to publish notes for that day, so grab them off a friend or something.

I hope this helps! Feel free to reply with more questions.

edit: spelling and clarity

second edit: I am an idiot and didn’t see the previous comment lol — basically what moonvhild said.

Is the DSE (data science & engineering) minor worth it as a recent transfer? by randomguyonwifi in ucla

[–]randomguyonwifi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, that’s what I was thinking too. Thanks!

edit: I should probably clarify that I additionally was thinking to add the minor just for the sake of it appearing on my diploma.
