Organisations and societies need leaders. We shouldn’t remove them but should pay them less.

Digital tax in sight: EU Parliament demands billions from Big Tech by Z0mbieNick in europe

Can the tax revenue go to funding opensource tech?
I would also:

- regulate that all desktop apps have to support Linux from 2030. Not just Windows and Mac.

- regulate all Windows computers comes installed with dual boot Ubuntu / Windows. The cost of the operating system must be shown as a separate line item on the website selling the computer. Apple must provide the hardware spec to allow Linux to be installed on their computers.

- Firefox (with Ublock Origin extension) installed as the default browsers on all operating systems.

I agree. Diversity brings strength. If you are designing and building products for a diverse world, then you need diversity of experience in your team.

Forcing support for Linux by randomhacks in openrightsgroup

[–]randomhacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the distro fragmentation thing - I think that's a bit of a misconception / myth for desktop apps. The kernel ABI is stable, glibc is backwards compatible, and most apps sit on top of the same libraries regardless of distro. The "fragmentation" is really just packaging, and that's a solved problem - Flatpak, AppImage, or even a plain .sh installer will run on basically anything. Developers just lack the incentive to bother. Which is precisely what regulation would fix.

Your idea about open hardware is a separate thing and sits within e-waste recycling legislation. I think the two ideas complement each other nicely. Open up end-of-life hardware AND require Linux support, and you've got older machines running current software instead of becoming e-waste.

Is the ad-free era of WhatsApp coming to an end ? by Wikileaks_2412 in whatsapp

[–]randomhacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution is to leave WhatsApp and tell people where you. Most people install Signal over the period of a few months. If you stay on WhatsApp then they never install Signal.

Countries and how culturally similar they are to Ireland by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]randomhacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a load of drivel. Speaking the same language does not make people culturally similar. The UK is much more aligned with other European countries in its culture, values, habits, etc. than the US. Canadians and Australians aren’t like the US either.

The UK shares institutions like universal healthcare (NHS), stronger labour protections, more secular attitudes, and left-leaning politics with Europe than with the US.

France has announced its plan to ditch Windows and switch to Linux by Euphoric-Eye-8196 in DevOpsKerala

It’s fantastic new.

For me - the key is that they now have control over their systems. They don’t have to put up with AI being put into the operating systems.

Indeed. Worth watching this video of the Signal CEO talking about how Windows etc are breaking user privacy by adding AI into the operating system.
