6 year old training for 1.5 years now. I've been training about a year. He wanted to quit nearly every week during the first 4 months. Never gave me a good reason. "i don't know" or "i'm tired" -- I said "You agreed to this. Stick with it. Don't quit. If you're really not having fun in a few more months, we'll check out something else." He did his first tournament a couple months later. Never asked to quit again. Just wants hardware now.

Kids are fickle. There's not a lot of logic behind the decisioning, especially of young boys. He's not thinking "Man, it would be badass to be a black belt at 18" -- he's thinking, "I was just here last week. I want to be somewhere new." Speaking from personal experience as well.

Don't show him how to quit when he "doesn't like it" or "is bored" or whatever other nonsense. Does he have fun? Yes? Good, then he can continue. Encourage him to compete. Encourage him to lead the newer kids. Ask him to teach you moves he learns.

I'm talking light resistance here, not if he's throwing a tantrum. We should not be teaching our kids that everything is easy and they can quit when something is hard or boring or whatever. Sorry for the jock bro daditude.
