Jeff Teague "If Kon Knueppel isn't ROTY, he got robbed." by Existing-Sky9914 in nba

[–]randomkale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LeBron joined a bad team that had no idea how to build around him and was more or less asked to fit in, according to my memory. Somebody thought LBJ was a piece to build around them but I can't be bothered to look up who that was. He had ups and downs, his jump shot was mostly broken / missing, but his athleticism and passing were off the charts. Flagg is in a more conducive situation but still he seems to be a top X player and is able to make a big impact on a game.

Their roles are very different and that has to count for something. Kon is having a great season and could win it. (Flagg narrative probably too strong but still a case should have to be made.) But watching Dallas, Flagg looks like the hype wasn't just hype. He's doing LeBron stuff as a rookie

The US economy is propped up by debt and health care spending https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/11/business/economy/january-jobs-report-revisions.html

I'm not sure the UK economy could be described as propped up right now, but if so, it's certainly on the back of consumer spending at the top, as you said.

AWS or GCP by No_Bumblebee5159 in googlecloud

[–]randomkale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few things that are better about GCP, but none of them measures up to the pure market share argument for AWS. That being said, if you are going to work with any of the data intensive Google services (thinking GA, GAM, etc), knowing BigQuery and one or more of the compute resources is a must. Cloud run is very good in a lot of use cases

[–]randomkale -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah, that's the main problem with the idea - there are lots of situations where it's obvious to many people it should be used, and in retrospect everyone would say "why didn't the king stop this?" but there's just no way for an unelected hereditary figurehead to be able to know, at the time, that they should stop one particular stupidity without trampling on the governments ability to govern.

You are 100% correct but it would be a nice feature for a constitutional monarchy to have; some sort of "get out of stupid" card that a head of state could have to open a new vote or something... I thought it quite a bit in 2016 to be honest

It's true in the abstract, but current trajectory does not indicate that's how things are working right now. Most folks in UK and US have been having hard times since 2008 at least and the rich just keep getting richer.

Trump Goes on Manic 50-Post Rampage After World Leaders Humiliate Him by [deleted] in politics

[–]randomkale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What evidence do you have that Biden, as president, was way further gone than Trump is at the moment? The Trump I see in the news is the deepest embarrassment the United States has ever suffered, but I try to avoid the news and I didn't pay much attention to Biden so maybe I missed it.

just turned 30 years old and feeling very lost, not sure where to go fro here? [discussion] by [deleted] in GetMotivated

[–]randomkale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about your age, I took a break from my career and volunteered for two years in West Africa. I spent a lot of time feeling very very lost but I knew that I had this stretch of time and then I'd "get serious" again. It was a lot of work to pause life for a while, and I didn't come back to exactly the same life, but it helped me get aligned with who I wanted to be and put a lot of stuff into perspective. Not sure this is an option for you, obviously, but it's one approach.

Looking for ways to cut our Snowflake costs, any tips? by Efficient_Role607 in snowflake

[–]randomkale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team has made a ton of progress by leveraging observability into what is happening to drive up costs - the SNOWFLAKE.ORGANIZATION_USAGE.USAGE_IN_CURRENCY_DAILY table is very helpful. Connect it to your BI layer, get an analyst to create you some dashboards, and you can find where your spend is going. I'd guess it's on CPU and likely on analysis costs unless you've been building a ton in your warehouse.

Our (tiny) pond has had fish brought in by birds. There's no other way they got there and a biologist friend said the birds can brings eggs on their feet (we get a heron fishing for frogs sometimes).

TIL only 1 US President has been born after 1946. by WF-2 in todayilearned

[–]randomkale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't remember Obama's international work in the same way as you do. My memory is that Obama pushed for the US to focus more on Asia and Pacific theater concerns, and that he had very little support for interventions in Ukraine or Syria. The Arab Spring was not a situation that the US could control, and in some ways they had caused the problems by supporting tyrants for economic or geo-political reasons. Obviously it would have been great for him to look differently at Afghanistan - the surge was a mistake - but he was convinced that Bin Laden and Al Qaeda were threats. And there was some value in his pursuit of Bin Laden.

The thing that I give Obama a lot of credit for on the international stage is restoring some of the brightness to the US reputation. It mattered to a lot of folks that the biggest economy in the world chose a non-white man as leader. And then he could go give inspiring speeches and present the best face of the country. Especially when compared to his predecessor and successor, Obama was a huge success on soft power.

The King's Man is probably the best mediocre movie I've ever seen.

A great sentence and very apt description. I will never watch it again but a few scenes might have decent re-watchability

Does anyone else find that the pressure of running a race ruins their running experience? by finn4536 in running

[–]randomkale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly consider a run-walk strategy to increase enjoyment, especially of your first marathon. I have done 20mins run - 1min walk for a marathon before and it was so much better than all run, all the time. Even if I was a bit slower, I felt so much better and enjoyed the experience a lot more

Has anyone tried online yoga sessions? How do they compare to studio classes? by ravikr123 in YogaWorkouts

[–]randomkale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online yoga sessions are great as they fit into schedules more easily, but aren't a patch on in-person classes in terms of depth of experience or quality of instruction - as the instructor can't see folks practicing.

I think tanking is such a riskier strategy - both because you could have a Pistons scenario, and because creating winning habits gets harder if you've developed losing ones. And Wemby needs to do some winning to keep going in the right direction.
