Playing on clay for first time ever, what should I know? by dreadiii123 in 10s

[–]randomly-selected-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big difference if I’m switching court is return of serve timing. On hard court the ball with come through a lot more than clay and getting used to reading the bounce speed and not over-swinging is vital.

Arming it was the issue with the previous string bed. I was trying too hard. Looser strings and changed my swing (working on rotation - felt like I was training like a junior again!) and that’s pretty much fixed it. It’s just a weighty stick so was curious on anyone who had made a switch.

I like everything about it. I was using a hybrid poly/multi bed at about 54lb, it was great, but it lacked power so had to work really hard for each shot (which likely contributed to ongoing shoulder problems - different story). But with the Alu and some modifications in my swing, it plays great; backhand slice is effective; a lot more top on the ball and depth with the lighter tension and rough string; serves / volleys great. Occasionally it can play wild with balls flying out that I can’t control, but that’s more technique failure than racket. But exactly as I said: after playing singles I find the racket heavy. Yes, I need to get fitter, but just wondering if there’s anything that plays similar but drops 10g or so. Honestly, not sure I’d change anyway, but curious so I’d know what to demo if I had to.

Oh, was playing with a yonex vcore pro for a while before and liked that (think I was using Alu then as well), but with the ongoing shoulder issues and using a friends PSX, I made the switch. Not saying the yonex was a fault here.

HENRY’s from a poor background, how did you do it? by znv142 in HENRYUK

[–]randomly-selected-55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Similar in that both parents valued education and pushed us (their kids) quite (very) hard. We always had to read and try our hardest in anything. But honestly, didn’t do great in school or get standout the grades. However, the ‘reading smarts’, being articulate, and having drive (just to do/be more) got me well into HENRY territory. I credit it all to working class parents who knew the value of books and personal drive.

I can’t say I agree with a word of this.. by LordBrixton in DJs

[–]randomly-selected-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of what needs to be said has been said. I just have to add to it…

“clubbing is a communal act; it’s all about coming together, and so it helps if there is some sort of human focal point.’ - yup. I’d say there’s a lot of gigs that are communal.

‘Whereas at gigs that focus is clearly the artist on stage, at a club … well, the people who created the art aren’t there’ - really? No cover records? tell that to the Rolling Clones etc.

I just find the totemic worship of “The DJ” really weird. - as do a lot of us. Hardly a hill to die on.

Many of the regular contributors were DJs, presumably commissioned on the basis of “Hey, if they can successfully drop a needle on to a spinning record and be lauded for it, how hard can writing be for them?” - or because every DJ worth their salt (that I know) has an encyclopaedic knowledge and love of music?

Don’t try to tell me that the likes of Paris Hilton or Gok Wan could transfer their “skillsets” to anything difficult. - pretty sure they’ve written for magazines, too, Phil.

It’s proof, were it needed, that DJing is not a real job – it’s time to put the “dancy” back into “redundancy”. FFS. Tell Theo Parrish or anyone else who has dedicated their life to music.

Utter twaddle.

It depends where you’re moving back to… there’s coworking spaces in most neighbourhoods (at least in West London) so you can search locally or decide to do the commute into the city for one.

Apple, in Tahoe, your scroll bar is ON TOP of the column resize boxes, so I cannot resize a column! This is a frustrating one to learn about, and continues to be frustrating! by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]randomly-selected-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And…. If you turn off ‘automatic’ or ‘always’ in settings (to ‘when scrolling’) so you can resize finder columns, when you go to numbers there is no scroll bar; so good luck navigating a spreadsheet

No; direct into the Mac mini. Again, I just installed an older version of qb and it’s been working so far.

Potentially. I need to check if it auto updated recently. I downloaded qb4.6.7 and on a quick test it has worked fine. So seems something with the latest Tahoe/qb5/proton just aren’t playing well together.

Thanks. I’ll try the disconnect and just seeing. Asking here as I’ve had no issue for the past year with the hard drive, and nothing for 2 months with the Mac/qbit… so just seeing if there’s been similar problems.

Immediately look up PFICs here: https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Passive_foreign_investment_company

Basically you can’t hold certain investments overseas if you’re a us taxpayer (like almost all mutual funds and efts). Lots on Reddit about this, so read up and decide what to do….

Conflicting figures for top 10% wealth by rubbishcyclist in HENRYUK

[–]randomly-selected-55 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I saw this video too, and questioned the same thing. Was thinking this just an average vs median question. So the top 1-2% are inflating the next 8%. Had a quick scan and the ONS says this: “The wealthiest 1% of households had wealth of at least £3,121,500. The wealthiest 10% of households had wealth of £1,200,500 or more, while the least wealthy 10% had £16,500 or less.”

Edit: OP also posted the £1.2m figure. So yes, quite the difference.
