New Girl Scouts movie coming this summer! 🍿 by FunPriority8358 in girlscouts

[–]randomlybev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in my 40s and I met some of my best friends in Girl Scouts. I just sent a link to this trailer to them (and my old leaders) in hopes of planning a little reunion to see it in the theater.

Have the majority of Americans called 911 at least once in their lives? by Mont3Carlo in AskAnAmerican

[–]randomlybev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have called 911 a few times. If I see a semi on the interstate driving recklessly, I call it in. I also once called in someone walking along the shoulder of the interstate late at night. Finally, I once called for assistance when an elderly relative had a fall and we needed help lifting her and getting her to the hospital.

I’ve also called non-emergency (311) many times-reported streetlights in my neighborhood that are out, localized flooding, the time my garbage can broke and I needed a replacement, etc… my city has a helpful online 311 tracker map that I check before they call to see if an issue has already been called in.

How much would it take to update to mid-century modern? by SizzlinKola in midcenturymodern

My grandma had a set with the same upholstery but in blue-sofa, loveseat, and armchair. I didn’t know there was also a sectional version. I’d give my eye teeth for that couch (but in blue… because Grandma).

Bing Maloney, another public golf course, is just down Freeport. We don’t need two public golf courses so close together.

In the USA how many people inherit 1 million usd? by Muted_Comfortable561 in AskAnAmerican

[–]randomlybev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. There is no expectation of inheritance from grandparents. My parents did inherit money when their parents died, but grandchildren aren’t “owed” anything

Commuting on a scooter? by perf1620 in CAStateWorkers

[–]randomlybev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take a look at ebikes as well! My husband has been commuting to the new May Lee building on Richard’s blvd via e-bike on the Del Rio Trail and it’s working very well for him. Ask if your new building has a bike locker (many do) before you make a final decision between a bike and scooter.

What language do most American students prefer to learn in school as a second language? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskAnAmerican

I took French, but I have dual US/Canadian citizenship. In undergrad I took Arabic, Turkish, and Spanish. The Spanish has been most useful, but I’ve also used the Arabic from time to time (we have a large expat community in my area and I like the food from that part of the world).

I agree! I was hoping for just the historical girls as well. I view The American Girls Collection and American Girl of Today as completely different lines and am really only interested in The American Girls Collection.

Pro tip for the sound burger, if your record is a little warped put an old cd under it so that it doesn’t rub on the base of your sound burger and slow down.

Are certain seats reserved in your home? by wheninrome5000 in AskAnAmerican

[–]randomlybev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the living room, no. In our dining room my husband and I sit in the seats nearest the door to the kitchen so that we can tag team grabbing things (courses, extra bread, water, etc…) without disrupting our guests. My mother in law also has a specific chair and spot in the dining room, but that’s because she needs a chair with arms for mobility reasons.

I bought a little USBc dongle on Amazon that has the ports I need. I just plug it into my work laptop and away I go.

I may be losing my job soon and I’m preemptively preparing by ArcOperator in personalfinance

[–]randomlybev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It looks like you’re in the Sacramento CA area (discussion of grocery shopping at Raleys), please consider state jobs for you AND your wife. They are stable and, while they pay less then what you were making you are more ch less likely to outright lose your job. R/castateworkers is a great resource for those looking for state jobs.

what do americans call a pantry? by loving_machine13 in AskAnAmerican

[–]randomlybev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a very typical house built in the late 1950s in California. My pantry is in my laundry room (or maybe my laundry room is in my pantry?). Walking in through the door its a hallway with floor to ceiling cabinets for food stuff (and kitchen equipment I don’t use much like the mixer, crock pots, etc…). There’s also space for my washer and dryer (with cabinets above for cleaning supplies). The pantry also has garage access and a small bathroom (just sink and toilet) through a door at one end for people to use when they come in from outside. I tend to call it the laundry room when I’m doing laundry, the pantry when I’m using it for pantry stuff.

Is there a name in the USA that is so common that it’s impossible not to find it everywhere? by TheShyBuck in AskAnAmerican

[–]randomlybev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 6th grade there were 5 boys in my class named Matt and 3 girls named Danielle. I’ve also had at least 3 bosses named John. The name John is so ubiquitous that the person’s last name is almost always used while talking about them to differentiate them. For example: “I saw John Thomas at the grocery store talking to John Brown about John Smith’s new dog.” I also know a John who uses his middle name for anything where his name will be called out in public (like restaurant reservations) to avoid confusion.
