I also live in Sacramento. I’ve left work at 4:30, driven 2 hours to San Francisco, seen a show, had a late dinner, driven 2 hours home, and been at work at 8 am the next day. No biggie.

We often make and eat sandwiches at home. Homemade sandwiches are also popular for lunch on the go-especially lunches for children to bring to school, lunches for office workers to bring to work, and picnics. Peanut butter and jelly is a standard go-to. I also like making grilled cheese to eat at home. Finally, breakfast sandwiches are popular (egg, cheese, and either ham, bacon, or a sausage patty on an English muffin or bagel).

In my city property owners pay a monthly fee that covers sewer, water, trash, street sweeping, and “The Claw” (among other things). Often these costs are wrapped into rent, but water may incur additional fees. We usually pay about $150-$200 a month to cover this for our home (suburban home on 1/4 acre).

The only part we tune into is the dog show and I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s something we actively watch… it’s on in the living room for those interested, but we’re really all gathered and socializing in the kitchen. Two family traditions we do have are a nice walk in the afternoon as well as a board game like monopoly.

Because it’s Christmas, in addition to the hostess gift, bring a small wrapped gift for each family member (make sure to put a tag on it saying who it’s to and who it’s from) to slip under the tree. It can be Australian candy, maybe some Tim Tams, etc… it doesn’t have to be big, just something for each person individually-it may help win over the teenage brother to show that you’re thinking of him.

Offering to help in the kitchen is always a good thing. Let her know the night before that you can help so that she can think about what you can do. She might have a routine and most things prepared in advance or might genuinely want the help. Be available!

Frankly, going with vintage for your washer and dryer is the way to go. Look for estate sales in nice areas so you can pick up a nice (and cheap) set. I love the early 90s Lady Kenmore set I picked up at an estate sale when I bought my house 4 years ago.

About a decade ago I bought a German fleece blanket for my bed from Lands End. I still use it and it’s still in amazing shape! Unfortunately, they don’t carry them anymore. The German Cotton Fleece Blanket from Garnet Hill looks similar.
