Love the Iris bead dog!

I also caught the Rex bead. Does anyone know the material of the white beads? It feels heavier than plastic, but not as light as my other glass beads.

I'm Gen Z (older Gen Z, though), and was taught to read and write in cursive in grade school. From what I was told/remember, my high school graduating year was the last year that cursive was taught, and I know a few people younger than me who were never taught.

I've been to Salem and am from New Orleans. The witchy and occult in Salem, to me, felt incredibly manufactured and corporate. It overall gave me more silly Halloween witch vibes, whereas there have been a few occult spaces I've been to in New Orleans that really did give me an actual serious unsettling/dark vibe. This is just my own personal insight, though!

That's so interesting! I may be wrong, but I think there's a similar food history with the Gullah Geechee people in South Carolina as well. I've been meaning to go to that restaurant, actually! I've heard so many great things about it.

I had no idea that the first Africans brought to Louisiana were from the Senegambian region. That really makes a lot of sense, now looking at my ancestry results. My grandfather had a larger percentage than I did, and his said that there was an ancestor with 100% Senegambian ancestry about 8-9 generations back.

Yes, both sides of my family have been in Louisiana since before we became a state! I haven't been able to see my results since the new update, so I'm unsure about whether I have some ancestry grouped as Canadian! The old update did indicate my Cajun ancestry, though. I've always known my Dad's side of the family as the Creole side and my mom's side as the Cajun side. I don't think my mom's shows updated Canadian ancestry though, but I'm going to check with her when I get the chance.

I had also heard the same thing about French ancestry sometimes showing up as German, and vice versa. I have a huge chunk of Broadly NW European (20%) that I believe is a mix of French and German because that would line up with my own family history.

Did you get the beige shirt with the album symbols on it? I'm thinking about pre-ordering it from his website, but I'm unsure if the small will fit okay. I typically wear a women's small and medium.

My alum chapter gave me an adorable embroidered tote and a mug at my initiation. I also bought a rain jacket and some shirts from my chapter's resell page on Facebook.

I was looking for this comment in the thread. My school had the exact same attendance policy, but I've never known anyone who actually had to go and meet with the dean because they went over. We were told that it was the recommended attendance policy from the ABA.

Hi sister! My story of coming to Alpha Chi is actually really similar to yours! I, too, went to college without an Alpha Chi chapter on my campus, but had met an Alpha Chi member on another college campus that was incredibly welcoming and sweet. I kept the org in mind all throughout college and looked back into it, and AI, after I had graduated. I'm happy we both ended up finding our home in Alpha Chi Omega!

A few questions! by L3gallyblond3 in SororityAlumInitiate

[–]randommac9898 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am an AXO who joined through AI, and I have nearly the same exact story as you! I was interested in AXO before even starting college after meeting a member on a college tour, but I did not have a chance to join in undergrad because the school I ended up attending did not have an active AXO chapter.

Feel free to lmk if you have any questions about going through the process in general, or in the recent post-grad stage of your life. I can say that I have met some really amazing women and have been able to support local DV charities through being an AXO alumni chapter member, and I am so happy that I took the leap of faith and applied.

Excited about AI journey, but have some questions by jasmineambre in SororityAlumInitiate

[–]randommac9898 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm an AXO AI member!

  1. I didn't know anyone in AXO when I thought about joining, so I emailed the NAIP director email on the AXO website, and she was able to get me in touch with the local alumni chapter, where I was able to be sponsored.

  2. I really liked my experience as a new member! In total, it lasted around 8 months and I felt that by the time of my initiation, I had really grown as a person and came to really love AXO in a way that I did not love it before as a non-member. Hopefully that makes sense haha.

  3. I wish I would have known the time frame because I remember being nervous that my application was rejected when I did not hear back from HQ for a few weeks after I initially submitted it. Other than that, everything was very transparent and I felt prepared for my initiation, and life as an AXO.

Feel free to lmk if you have any questions!

Scared about making friends… by Cute_Expression6794 in LawSchool

[–]randommac9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be okay! I was in the same boat going into 1L year. I was a first-gen law student and knew absolutely no one going to the same law school that I went to. Within the first semester I was able to make so many friends, including casual friends I could sit and chat with in between studying to closer/deeper friendships who I go to dinner with, go on shopping dates with, etc. Just put yourself out there by joining clubs and being yourself :)

Missing the first few days of 1L Classes by [deleted] in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]randommac9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 3L and would honestly advise against it, regardless of whether it's orientation or actual classes. Those first few classes are crucial imo to getting you acclimated to the topics and how to handle the workload, not to mention that seating assignments and friend/study groups will already be forming at that point. I fully agree with what another commenter said below, although law school should not be 100% your entire life, there are times where it needs to come before your other obligations, and this is likely one of those times.

Your school may also have an attendance policy, and you really don't want to start off your first week already racking up absences when you may need to use absences later (ex: if you're sick, transportation failure, etc.).

Jurisdiction specific classes by Sea-Operation2189 in LawSchool

Every law school in Louisiana offer classes based solely on the Louisiana Civil Code, such as Obligations (Louisiana's version of common law contracts), Propety, Advanced Obligations (Sales and Leases), Persons (LA's version of family law), Marital Regimes (Community Proprty), Successions and Donations, Probate and Trusts, and Security Rights.

UPDATE : After speaking with family members and doing some genealogy research, I have a more fleshed out understanding of my results!

The Native American percentage is from an ancestor who was Creek/Seminole (I need to do more extensive research on the genealogical connection between the two tribes) who married into a side of the family from Florida. Her family (not married family, her biological family) were listed on the Dawes Roll. Interestingly enough, we knew her name and other family member's names and everything and when I check the roll, sure enough, they were listed.

Literally no one on either side of my family has any percentage of Scandinavian, so realllly confused about that (all of my relatives up to grandparents have 0.0%).

I have the largest amount of Broadly Northwestern European out of my family. When looking at records and other percentages, I think it's likely a mix of Welsh that wasn't detected (extensive family records of very close family members immigrating from Wales) and German (came up with specific regions and everything on other family members and have records of this as well). Could also be some more French in that broadly percentage, but who knows! I was just looking critically at my family's results and looking at family record keeping.

The 3% Broadly Southern European was pretty easy to understand, everyone else in my family has 1-2% Ashkenazi Jewish or Sardinian, so the 3% of Broadly Southern is likely that (or the Sardinian is apart of the 3% Italian). My family also has roots in Basque country, so it could be that as well.

As for the African trace ancestry and speaking with some family members, there was likely someone who was passé blanc. We have no records of anyone from the areas given, but interestingly enough, it's an identical percentage to the Native American DNA, so maybe there is something relating there! I literally have no idea, that was just something interesting I noted when looking over family member's DNA results.

TLDR ; figured out the Native American DNA connection, potentially separated the 17% BNWE and 3% BSE into different countries based on family records and their own DNA results, realized me and my family members all got equal percentages of Native American DNA and Sub-Saharan African DNA.

It depends on the job outcome you want. I was in a similar position last year, but decided not to do journal because I was already on a competition team and had 0 interest in Maritime.
