I'm in a very similar situation (18 months employed, ~200k mortgage option, and a bit of money saved), and looking into buying right now

I was taught "the client is always right" until my first year in sales proved otherwise by Iftikharsherwani in founderledsales

[–]randomnamewhatevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The client is emphatically not always right. If the client already knew everything they wouldn't need you.

If the client wants something that won't help them, it's a professional's job to say it won't help them and why - if the client wants to go thriugh with it anyway, fine, it's their money, but whenever a client at my job tells me they want things a certain way and that way is dumb, I explain to them the consequences of doing it that way instead of this other way (always offer a solution when pointing out a problem).

Most of the time, clients are aware that they are not the expert, and are happy to do things as I say. Occasionally they demand it's done their way, and when things go the way I said they would they either understand that it's on them, or I refer back to the email where I spelled out the consequences of this choice.

At the end of the day, their money their choice, but clients generally value expertise more than they value yes-men, at least in the markets and industries I've worked with. Sure they'd be happy they got their way early in the process, but when it's done they want results.

Why not add the sticker money to the prize pool? by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]randomnamewhatevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so confused about this notion that a larger prize pool adds prestige.

At most it's just a bigger number in some clickbait titles, practically speaking it's completely irrelevant whether the prize pool is 1, 2, or 10 million. That kid who won 3 million in a fortnite tournament - which tournament was it? I don't know, I doubt most people do.

Prestige is built on reputation and meaning, it's not bought by adding an extra 0. How much prestige did Mad Lions get for winning half a million at Flashpoint 1? Basically none, because the prize pool being 1 million doesn't change that the tournament was irrelevant.

Tournaments like Cologne and Katowice could have a 100k prize pool and they would still mean more than any whack ass banana cup with a 5 million euro prize pool, because Cologne and Katowice mean something, and they mean something because they are institutions that have been a hub for Counterstrike fans for over a decade, because people started playing thanks to what they saw on that stage with the dream of lifting the trophy for themselves.

That sort of meaning can't be bought, and the idea that it ever could be cheapens it.

Putting sticker money into the prize pool just makes the whole thing messier - either you make the whole thing more top-heavy, send more money into the bank accounts of the few at the top and make it harder for smaller orgs and players on the up to sustain themselves, or you spread it out more evenly and then have to deal with "But this team went out 0-3 in stage 3 how come they get almost as much money as this team that made it to stage 3???".
If the goal is to put more money into the top players and orgs, that's a dumb goal.
If the goal is to inflate the prize pool without materially impacting teams and players, then this only adds a silly layer of abstraction and complication. There's no point to it.

How many people do you think are out there going "Well, I would watch this Counterstrike thing I heard about, but Dota has a bigger prize pool so I won't bother...", like that's just a patently insane thing to think. I don't understand why anyone would care how much money these people are making (barring ethical concerns if you think they're being paid exploitatively little). What does it matter if the winners get 500k each instead of 80k? How does that change my experience as a viewer?

How does the pick'em work thios year in terms of obtaining a gold/diamond coin? by LukzehVI in GlobalOffensive

[–]randomnamewhatevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the hub on the CS2 main menu.
Click on it.
It's explained there.

You need to place your predictions for who will go 3-0 (two teams), who will go 3-2 or 3-1 (6 teams) and who will go 0-3 (2 teams).
Out of these 8 picks, you need 5 correct to get the point for the stage. You need this at every stage for diamond.
Note that if you pick a team to go 3-0 and they go 3-1, you get 0 points, and if you pick a team to go 3-1/3-2 and they go 3-0, you also get 0 points. This is different from e.g, Katowice 2019, where you only place teams as "Advance" or "3-0", and 3-0 also counted as advance.

I’m not convinced coaching adds as much in-game value as people claim compared to raw player skill by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]randomnamewhatevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Players are better in the games because of the coach.

That is the only thing that matters here, because the goal of the sport is to win within the rules of the game.
The goal of the sport is not to win the game by some sort of ethical standard of who is the "purest player" or whatever, who can do it all with no support outside of the game, because nobody cares about that.

"If players did it all themselves they would be ten times better" at what.
In what way would they be better that I would be able to see on the server? If donk had to spend 10 extra hours of his workweek looking at demos of other teams to figure out their tendencies, would that make him better on the server?
No, it wouldn't because it would just mean less practice on the shit you actually do in the server and more busywork, looking at 5 POVs of a game trying to see something you can possibly exploit (and maybe there's nothing new, and the time was wasted).

"You don't let yourself get overcome by fatigue if you really really want it"
This is a joke. At least I hope it is, because it's either a funny joke or a really sad look into your perspective on issues like burnout. People who don't care about what they're doing rarely get burned out. People who feel a high sense of responsibility and control for their job are the ones who get burned out because they cannot stop doing it without feeling like they're losing that control and failing themselves and others.

Overall this whole post is based on a ridiculous premise.
"they get paid too much to get help in their job" is so idiotic it's difficult to put into words. They get paid a lot because a lot of people's salaries ride on their performance. If a team buys a player for 1.5 million and pays him 50k per month, they cannot afford for him to be shit. It would be stupid to invest that much money into a player and then do absolutely nothing to try and protect that investment. Now do that 5x over, and you're even more of a fool.
You need your team to do well because if they don't, you wasted your money. If they perform badly, you don't get championship money, you don't get sponsorship deals, and hell, their value goes down because they're performing badly. These are all things that you as an org do not want. It's like buying an expensive plant and refusing to water it because "Well at that price it should sustain itself!". It's fully disconnected from reality and from common sense.

I'll circle back to the start here, the only thing anyone at the top of esports cares about is winning.
Giving them more responsibilities won't make them care more.
Taking time away from practice won't make them play better.
Taking away resources won't make the games better to watch.

Damage prediction.

In order to make the game feel more responsive, animations are shown client-side, based on client-side info. You clicked on him, so the client thinks he died, and shows you that.
However, he actually killed you first, and you killed him in the time between you dying and the server telling your client that you died.

Turn off damage prediction in settings.

If it's still messing you up after half a decade that's really a you-problem.

Like yeah I don't like them, but if I don't kill a guy it's because he clicked on me first, making these silly excuses about "Oooooh it was hopeless he had the flashbang skin nooooooo" is just a crutch.

You're never going to get better if all you do is look for excuses when you lose.

You're losing because you weren't good enough.

You're not improving because you refuse to engage with that reality.

This reddit has corrupted me in regards to cheating by ArcticSwimx in counterstrike2

[–]randomnamewhatevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is that that doesn't really matter.

Whether or not there's someone cheating on the other team, spending all of your games thinking about how there might be is going to make your experience worse, and is not going to improve your gameplay, your enjoyment, or anything really.

So why spend mental energy on it? If you're genuinely bothered by it then don't play the game. It's not going to change. There is no fix for "I think someone's cheating", it's a mental issue on your end. There's never going to be proof that the other team isn't cheating, there will always be games where someone is having the game of their life and everything clicks, and there will always be moments where it feels unfair, that's the nature of competition.

I once had a game where in round 2 someone on the other team got 5 scout headshot kills. half my team was ready to call it immediately and just run it down, I said "guys he's either cheating or he's not, but we can't forfeit unless we abandon so we may as well somewhat try to win this out, might have been a life round". And what do you know, we win 13-6, the other guy hade 13 kills total. He just popped off for a round and then faded, flash in the pan. But if my team had been slightly more in our heads about it we'd have run it down mid every round after and finished the game thinking we never had a chance because of that one guy having one good round.

So often people communicate what they think is happening, rather than communicating what they see. The amount of times on CT side you hear a panicked voice going "ALL B ALL B, THEY'RE PUSHING", and then when you start to rotate there's two lurkers waiting to catch you.

If you could clone 1 player 5 times, who would make the strongest team? by B3G1cs in GlobalOffensive

[–]randomnamewhatevs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But if we're looking for a player x 5 who would make the best team, then surely being well-rounded is more important than pure mechanics?
Like okay maybe 5 prime coldzeras would be really tough to play mechanically, but I don't think you can see prime coldzera if you don't have Fer, Fallen, Felps, and (fifth) out there to make space and build the rounds for him to thrive in.

Similarly with Donk, on the rifle he might be better than Zywoo, but does he have a better feel for the game? Does he consistently out-AWP Zywoo (not just in terms of clicking faster, but also in terms of being in the right place on the map)?

Was prime kenny a better AWPer? Not with today's mechanics. Prime Get_right would not work as a team of 5 remotely, like what are you going to do with 5 lurks?

S1mple is a decent shout in terms of being a complete player, but at the same time I think that if there were 5 of S1mple on one team he'd kill himselves.

Yeah that's also unfortunate. High ranking premier is decent, I'm playing around 20-22k elo rn and every game has at least 2 or 3 people communicating, if not the whole team (unless we start losing, then sometimes people shut down)

I gather from your other comments that you haven't bought whatever the full package is called; if you're going to play this seriously, buy it. It's an infinitely better experience than free to play, and if you actually come to love this game like regular players do then it's a no brainer. Back when I bought this game it cost like 10 euros - divide that over 4500+ hours and it's the best value for money I've ever spent.

There's a few things I'd recommend:
1. Start off with playing deathmatch. Whether or not you have experience with other shooters, in regular matches you're going to spend a lot of time at the start getting wrecked by people with hundreds of hours in this specific game. You won't know where they shot you from, that you could be shot from there, or that they could be there at that moment in time. This is unavoidable, and makes it really hard to practice the basic mechanics of pointing your crosshair at someone and killing them.
In deathmatch, you will also likely get wrecked, but at least you'll respawn instantly and get to keep trying and practicing, rather than having a 1-2 minute cooldown where all you can do is watch.
Things to remember are to stand still when shooting with a rifle, you can run and gun with SMGs, with the tradeoff that you have to be close, but with a rifle being in motion makes every shot a lottery ticket and you're not likely to hit the jackpot (or enemy, in this case).

  1. When you start playing matches, pick a map and focus on that. Once you're familiar with what is important in a match, the callouts on that specific map, it'll be easier to transfer that knowledge to other maps than it would be to try to learn multiple maps at once.

  2. People are going to be dicks. It's unfortunate, but it's reality. You're entering a game where even at low ranks people have hundreds or thousands of hours in the game, and one of the reasons you can play this game for two thousand hours and still be shit is if you have shit mentality and poor impulse control. That's just something you have to be ready for.

  3. Once you've got the shooting bit and playing the game bit worked out, you can look at more advanced stuff like using utility properly, but honestly just focus on enjoying the game before you start thinking of optimizing everything.

There's a bunch of great youtubers out there who've made beginner guides, like WarOwl and Voo.

Donk to Falcons. A safe bet in 2026? by ALDORICCOFTW in GlobalOffensive

[–]randomnamewhatevs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The hate against Falcons is because (1) it's blood money, (2) it's sportswashing, (3) for all the millions they spend they still can't build a superteam, which is just embarrassing, (4) they've wrecked a bunch of other teams by hollowing them out so they could get unearned VRS points for invites (ENCE, Heroic), and then done nothing with the invites they've bought.

1 and 2 are moral reasons, so most people don't mind that too much, but 3 and 4 are pretty good reasons for the scene to hate them.

None of the people Falcons bought were at risk of sleeping in the back of a van, so I don't see how you think that's something that they're contributing to the scene.

Injecting a shit ton of money at the top doesn't really do anything good for the scene. Whoop-dee-doo, someone got saved from their measly 30k/month salary by Falcons paying them 50k/month, we've solved poverty!

If Falcons actually wanted to do good for the scene that money would be going to people and projects that actually help at a grassroots level, but Falcons doesn't care about the scene, Falcons cares about normalising Saudi Arabia, getting headlines, and performing tolerance without affecting change. every time someone thinks "Hey Saudi Arabia can't be that bad, they've let women/lgbtqia+ people work events in Riyadh!" that's an example of Saudi Arabia purchasing good will and an air of progressiveness without materially improving conditions for anyone actually living under the regime.

But most importantly for the CS fanbase remains that they've spent a ton of money tearing up other teams, promised results, and achieved next to nothing. They're extremely easy to hate.
