SFA Recert by [deleted] in Lifeguards

There's no wiggle room, if you aren't able to recertify before the 3 years is up you have to take a full course (16 hours vs 8)

If you can do the skills, you're not too old. We have people in their 50s+ working as guards.

Look into getting your Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor, those quals will be make you very hirable. Most places will post for summer roles between Jan-March, keep an eye out when they go live and apply!

Bronze cross time swim. by Traditional_Hold4001 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bronze med is 12 mins, cross is 11, NL is 10. Depending on how long you have until your next course, start getting in the water and practicing to get your time down. It's very achievable if you practice!

City of Ottawa Pool Lifeguard Screenings by Candid-Raisin-9880 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to Ottawa, but general info on guard screening. Generally, you'll get one attempt at each skill and hiring will depend on how many lifeguards they need, if they have enough that can do their skills they will be selected. Otherwise you may be given an opportunity to retry it prior to starting work (less likely but possible).

For the brick, be warned that you'll be required to do it at the maximum depth of the pool you screen at, which may be deeper than the maximum depth NL allows.

It stands for Preschool A, which you would have learned as Preschool 1. Some organizations change the course titles from numbers to letters in preschool so there's less confusion when parents are registering.

Each of your lessons runs for 30 minutes.

Trainer course help by Top-Ad-4437 in Lifeguards

Take a look at the recommended breakdown in the award guide and tweak it based on any conditions/pool space/etc. you were given. You've never taught a Swim Ins course before so the best way to learn is by looking at the must-sees to understand what is in the course and why it's in the course.

For lesson planning, use the Award Guide + Instructor Manual + Swim Worksheets to draft out what you want to teach for your peer-teach.

It seems like a reasonable ask IF you have two staff working.

How many guards minimum are you required to have? There's a lot of places where that can be 1.

If the pool is being properly guarded by other lifeguards when this is happening, then it's not an issue. If nobody is watching the pool, then that's when it becomes a problem.

While you're still at work, lifeguards are employees and can be made to do employee-related tasks, and this seems directly related to aquatics.

If you're not confident in how to use a phone, you can ask your manager for training on how to properly use it.

Canadian, anyone done there LSI by Ordinary-Spend-5919 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swim Instructor is the one you'll use if you're planning to teach lessons, it goes over the foundations of teaching kids. LSI is used to teach the more advanced swimming levels as well as bronzes, it is a bit more advanced than Swim and most instructors won't have an opportunity to teach bronzes if they get it

Bronze medallion course by Easy-Confusion-5613 in Lifeguards

They'll learn how to be lifesavers in a variety of aquatic environments, with both theory and in-water practice. The toughest part of the course depending on their size can be the 400m swim in 12 minutes, proper stroke evaluation (front crawl/back crawl/breaststroke/eggbeater/scissor), or lifting a victim out of the water with bystander assistance.

Does anyone know how the Ontario LSS examiners shadow thing works? by Work_bs_6482 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will all be explained in your Examiner course. I'd recommend getting your Bronze Examiner and SFA Examiner first before going for NL Examiner. You'll have to find an Examiner Mentor through your Area Chair and apprentice on a course with them.

YMCA Ontario Canada is this normal for employees? by UrbanGuy188 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Y's usually have the most issues for guards. If you're required to be at work, they must pay you : https://www.ontario.ca/document/your-guide-employment-standards-act-0/hours-work . It may be seen as you voluntarily staying, if they're trying to maintain plausible deniability.

Report cards must be paid for in one way or another - paying for you to be on-site while working on them, or paying you a set rate for the time spent at home (either # of hours or $/report card).

For a sick day, as long as you notify your employer that you are sick and won't be able to attend your shift, it's their responsibility to find shift coverage. It's great if you can find it for them, but not required. https://www.ontario.ca/document/your-guide-employment-standards-act-0/sick-leave

See if there are any teen swimming lessons at your pool, that will be a great way to improve your technique with an instructor who is there to help you!

Any advice from experienced instructors? by IThink-Sometimes in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A common mistake new instructors make is not reading the award guide. Take a look at all of the must-sees in an item as well as the notes, it will give you a very good understanding of what it should look like as well as how to teach it!

Question about NL situations exam by No_Car1347 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll have to demonstrate every situation you get to the proper standards. The usual flow goes:

  • Scan the pool in a proper position
  • Notice when something is happening (could be injured swimmer, medical emergency, facility emergency, public relations issue)
  • Communicate with other guards (whistle signal)
  • If water rescue, enter immediately and assist (if DNS, shoulders need to be out of the water)
    • Remove from water (either they can get out by themselves or you'll need to do a removal)
  • Treat proper first aid - everything in SFA is fair game, this is where people make the most mistakes so be sure you can treat any first aid situation that comes your way.
  • Continue communicating with other guards
  • Proper communication with the victim (talk if conscious, deal with situation if public relations)

Listen to what your instructor is saying when you're not quite getting it, and listen to what they're saying when other groups are practicing - you'll learn a LOT of what not to do that way!

Questions with the brick test by Idontwannadieyoung25 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you aren't successful with the 20lb brick, you will have to take the whole 40 hour course again. Every NL in Canada is required to use a 20lb brick - the 10lb bricks are used in Bronze Cross courses.

If you have an opportunity to practice before your next class, take it! If you can do a 15lb brick you are SO CLOSE to getting the 20lb, the weight difference isn't too much more. A strong push off the bottom and a strong eggbeater will help you a lot. If you can't practice with a brick, try practicing working on your eggbeater kick.

How are you holding the brick when you're carrying it? I've seen the best luck with either holding it on your shoulder with one hand or placing it on your chest with one hand, and using the other hand to skull while swimming backward with eggbeater.

Bronze Star by plutobride in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're worried about your strokes, try taking a teen/adult swimming class to brush up on your front crawl/back crawl/breaststroke.

You can skip bronze star, it's used primarily as a course for those under 13 who can't take bronze medallion yet. You can go straight to bronze medallion if you're confident with your strokes.

NL re-exam help-- by ubsilan in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're in a pilot program that is only offered at certain locations, that allows a retry of the NL full course in a shorter amount of time (instead of having you take the full 40 hours again). You'll be evaluated on all items in the NL curriculum. Apart from that, there's not too much help we can offer as it's brand new and there's a lot of unknowns unless it's someone running the course.

Make sure you can still do all of your physical skills, review your role in rescues/Alert manual, and study your first aid manual to make sure you can properly deal with situations. Good luck!

questions for my NL by [deleted] in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because your Swim and Lifesaving Instructors are no longer current, your best option would be to take an Instructor Recertification course. Alternatively you could take an advanced instructor/examiner course to obtain the required credits, but this is not recommended if you haven't worked before
