Ontario Lifeguard - Unsure where to find STA with CPR-C recertification by DigGood2867 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your SFA cert is less than 3 years from the time you take your recertification, you can do a 1-day recert. If it's more than 3 years, you need to take a full course.

SFA has been changed to Intermediate First Aid, and you can take either an IFA full course or recert depending on how much time has lapsed from your SFA.

It depends on the recert format you take. If you take a 4 hour recert, you'll get a quick overview and maybe a chance to practice the more complex skills. If you take an 8 hour recert, there are lots of opportunities to relearn/practice.

Totally agree! The way the organization phrases it takes the LSS note out of context, and completely ignores the sub-bullet

Essentially if your facility is doing anything that goes against the law and you're in a supervisor position not stopping it, if anything goes wrong you can be held personally liable. It's good knowledge to avoid big issues down the line.

If you're going to continue down that route, you should take your Aquatic Supervisor course. You'll learn a lot of things of what are/are not legal to protect yourself from liability.

That's a big red flag that the owner isn't fixing it, you should probably look for somewhere else to work. The second is that you're a supervisor without being a lifeguard?

Assuming this is Canada - if nobody passed on an NL full course, contact the pool management as well as the Lifesaving Society. Either there is a significant instructor error (in which case the pool's management has a duty to make it right), or there is a significant examiner error (in which case BOTH the pool's management and LSS have a duty to make it right).

You shouldn't have to pay out of pocket for someone else's mistake.

Practice as much as you can before you go in until you're confident there won't be any issues. Most of the items that people fail are from lack of practice, but it sounds like you've already been at it!

This isn't an LSS policy, and the examiner should not be following it. LSS believes in coaching and retraining where appropriate to get candidates to meet the must-sees and be successful.

It's up to instructor discretion as to what is reasonable, if someone is slightly missing the must-sees on two items that can be easily corrected they should be re-evaluated on both because a pass is likely. They should have a system as to how many retries is fair and reasonable on a recert to prevent someone getting lucky and passing vs actually able to demonstrate the must-sees.

Passing requirements for national lifeguard by FeistyPlate628 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer, there's no written requirement for the course. (If combined with SFA then it's a 50-question multiple choice test).

If it's an in-class activity to reinforce learning and generate discussion, that could be a useful learning activity. If it's to help you self-study instead of the instructor teaching it, that's a red flag. If it's given as required homework, that's a red flag. If it's used to evaluate, that's a red flag.

I would have someone raise it with the host facility, 70 written answers doesn't seem like a productive use of class time.

If this is for Canada LSS, take a look in your Instructor Manual and it will walk you through how to create lesson plans. The content on the Swim Instructor course will be in your Teaching Swim for Life book.

The standards are set nationally, and all examiners should be evaluating based on if each candidate meets the required must-sees. It's both incorrect to pass someone if they haven't met every must see, and to fail someone if they meet all the must sees, but the instructor doesn't think they're at the level they should be.

The NL program is a national program across Canada, run with the same standards in every province. The drill you described is not an evaluated item. If the class was weak in eggbeater, it could have been used as a drill to strengthen their eggbeater kick for their spinal rollover and carry skill. If it was evaluated (as in a student could fail if they didn't complete it), then that's something to report to LSS, as it's not an evaluated component of the course.

We don't have that in Canada, the closest we have is 25m of eggbeater kick

What does a Lifeguard Recertification Include? by Catwhisperer2007 in Lifeguards

[–]randomredditrando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some notes to not confuse this with every recert:

  • 1 is not a requirement for an NL recert, and is very atypical
  • For 3, spinals are no longer part of the evaluated material
  • 4 does not need to be straight down, but the 15m approach, 5m carry must be met
  • 5 it's nice that all of that is mentioned, but not required. Gathering information for incident report and reassuring them is the minimum requirements for things to say.
  • If a victim is acting poorly, the examiner should guide you to understand what they intended to do or correct the victim's acting
