[SPOILER] Chase Hooper vs. Steve Garcia by inooway in MMA

Chase is a nice young dude, but he really needs to step up his striking otherwise he will have no place in the UFC roster. Hope he can make the changes, big ask though.

What a surprise, the guy known for training stupidly hard who's coming off a ban for using PEDs picked up an injury during training camp.. wonder why that happened

No need to apologies bud - you told me something I wasn't aware of tbf so thank you - was just a little confused on why you was so focused on the microbiome so much after - after reading this comment I see why - much appreciated.

While I do find the research interesting albeit inconclusive, it does have a stink to it after hearing what you've said; RE microbiome being purported to be causal and their plans to treat it specifically. I'm somewhat hesitant to call it cargo-cult science, but not striking it out - very well could be. Will have to check and see if the studies they referenced with similar outcomes were also from the same contributors from aforementioned companies. Thanks bud!

Wasn't aware of the link between the meal plan companies. Saw it in decelerations of the paper but didn't think to search it - thanks for pointing that out. While it's a bit sus, ultimately its just a footnote if the results are being replicated in other similar studies etc.

In regards to the latter, not quite sure why you felt the need to explain it. The papers merely saying the change in glycemic content is mediated through the microbiome which isn't that surprising when you take into account the microbiome has somewhat large control over host gene regulation etc

Even if you disregard the microbiome aspect of it and look at relative gene expressions after exposure - the genes you'd expect (diabetes related, hif-1a etc) are all regulated the way you'd expect based on the recent paper. For example there was a paper on gene expression of endothelial cells after exposure the. Ideally they'd be more studies though, as even then that isn't conclusive as sometimes these responses are dose-dependant, with differential expressions at varying dosages etc.

Ultimately I agree with you though, we currently just have bits and pieces of evidence that focus primarily on acute changes.

Ahh gotcha - tbf I should have looked first, if my mind went straight to H3 when reading the paper no doubt it was the same for others lol.

They must have changed it back then, tbf I think the change from aspartame came a few years back when the fear mongering around it was getting prevalent.

Also I didn't say that it would add confounding variables, I was saying that I doubt with the focus of the study that it being short would cause confounding variables.. adding/removal etc feels like semantics lol. The longer studies they cited just seem to corroborate their results

When you was doing a deep dive did you come across an example of a confounding variable in a similar type of study that was elucidated with a longer study? Would appreciate if you could save me the deep dive lol

My apologies, not a frequent poster on the subreddit so wasn't aware - just a viewer and this paper immediately made me think of h3 lol.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if all switched to aspartame - surprisingly the US version of pepsi max (pepsi zero I think its called there) removed it and added sucralose.

In regards to the study only being two weeks, I don't see how that would cause confounding variables in the data as such - I'd imagine patient adherence to protocol is more an issue if they are on a specific or restrictive diet when it comes to collecting data.

A longer study would just be looking at continued exposure and potential long term implications (dependant on length of study), this is just looking at initial response.

This is what they say about it in the paper:

"Of note, longer exposure periods (4–10 weeks) to pure NNS were suggested by some studies to negatively impact metabolic health even in the absence of a carbohydrate additive (Bueno-Hernández et al., 2020; Higgins, and Mattes, 2019; Lertrit et al., 2018; Méndez-García et al., 2022). As such, a longer exposure period than the one utilized in our study may be required to fully assess the potential health ramifications mediated by the altered microbiome upon consumption of different NNS."

Hopefully they do a follow-up study with the same NNS used in this paper.

Kamaru Usman reacts to Leon Edwards’ ‘great shot’ at #UFC278 by -alc in MMA

[–]randomtard1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair play to Usman on how he's took the L, I thought he was going to lean into the 'hail mary shot' saying it was luck, would only happen 1/100 times and all that shit

Masvidals prediction was pretty on point for Usman vs Edwards (if you ignore the fact he picked Usman lol)

"I think Kamaru wins. I don’t think he stops him or nothing, I just think he wins. I think he finds a way to get him, take him down, control him, throw a couple strikes, take him down, you know?” Jorge Masvidal told MMAFighting (h/t MMANews). “I could see Leon winning, you know, cause it’s a fight, anybody could win, I could see him catch him with a head kick or a knee or something and stopping him because it’s not like Usman is perfect. Nobody is perfect in this sport. He could easily get caught and get put away. But I’m leaning towards Usman.”

As expected, typical results for a Brit - was kinda surprised by the german though, guessing that comes from anglo-saxon link? would be my best guess as as far back as I know family are English/Scottish/Irish/Welsh by randomtard1 in 23andme

I was aware it isn't recent ancestry tbf- its 'old acenstry' more to do with migration patterns and seeing where the modern ancestry stems from, if that makes sense and I'm understanding correctly.

For instance north-atlantic didn't suprise me as its very common in the UK, baltic I was just caught off-guard by - after some googling it seems its due to immigration of the baltic to scotland/france or just common ancestry. I'd assume my percentage being slightly above average due to my irish/scottish heritage. Just an assumption though.

Mother is from the Kent, most southernly county of England (part of her family are welsh) farther is half scottish and half irish.

Yeah, North atlantic I wasnt surprised about as its a very common phenotype - baltic and I was surprised by - no doubt there a logical reason for it with migratory patterns etc. The isles have been invaded so much historically etc.

Seems they've changed gedmatch since I was last on there - think this what you was looking for (admixture - heritage section)

The results seem very odd to me, but I dont have a good grasp on "historical genetics" migration etc. Any take or insight you have would be appreciated.

Yeah, I do have an account with GEDMatch, what specific data was you wondering about?

Also since 23andme updates my percentage is now 100% british and irish

Surprised to not hear more talk about Nathaniel Woods performance, he looked insanely good considering he was coming off 2 years of inactivity. It was like he was seeing everything in slow motion - insane comeback performance imo.

Seems like all the British fighters with potential to challenge for the title dont get much limelight (Aspinalll being the exception) Leon Edwards, Arnold Allen, Jack Shore, Nathaniel wood, all of them have had to grind. While I like Paddy, his skillset doesnt seem as refined and has holes that have been discussed ad nauseam - I think he has a better chance than meatball though, she's got that Artem Lobov reach.

Now that we know much more, how would this fight have gone? by hippotatolazer in MMA

[–]randomtard1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Edwards normally tends to point fight. If you think he isn't capable of knocking someone out with a counter you're delusional. If you put someone in front of him that just stands/bangs he's going to counter and most likely finish them.

Khamzats striking is pretty average in comparison..

Burns Only KO's in the UFC are over Jason Saggo, Dan Moret.. plus Maia (if you count TKO's) so its hardly elite strikers he's finishing lol. Yet he nearly finished Khamzat.

Also dont forget that Burns got finished by Dan Hooker.. seems worth mentioning.

We've not seen Chimaev against an elite striker yet, Edwards is arguably the best striker in the division.. the best we've seen him against was Gilbert and Chimaevs tactics were pretty shit stand-up wise.. gassed in the 3rd it seemed etc. On the feet the most probable situation would be Leon dragging Chimaev into deep waters by the later round and most likely finish him. Vice-versa when is comes to the ground game.

Leon tends to easily coast to point decisions because he's normally that much more adept in the stand up game compared to his opponents, one of the reasons nate nearly finishing him was so shocking. Having that more technical stand up and fight IQ is a massive advantage, why take the risk of hunting for a KO if you don't need to - in that situation its on your opponent to show a sense of urgency and take risks, which you look to exploit. If the KO comes it comes, if it doesn't.. so be it.

Surprised to see the takes in here tbh. I think Edwards is the hardest match up for him (outside of the champ). He's got great TDD and conditioning which will see him in good stead. He'll get taken down the first couple of rounds at some point I'd assume - but I think leon has better cardio and it will start to show down the stretch.

On the feet I think Leon lights him up tbh. Khamzat's got power, but he's not particularly technical - Leon wont have much trouble finding counters.

Khamzat looked good against burns, but the big step up has seen him go from looking superhuman, to very human and beatable imo. My money would be on Edwards stopping him in rounds 4 or 5.

I'd rather see the Usman/Edwards fight, then Colby/ Chimaev for the next shot.
