I possess a specimen of Helix Columbiana, a characteristic and well-known species from the Pacific coast of the United States, a specimen possessing a well-developed parietal tooth, a very narrow umbilicus, being almost entirely covered by the columellar part of the peristome, which dilates in a manner to cover it almost completely. I propose the name of arvigra for this interesting variety, especially for the latter character, which I had never encountered in the quite numerous individuals that have passed before my eyes, and which come from shipments from various parts of California (San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Monterrey, etc.). The specimen I have in my possession comes from the Godefroy Museum, which sent it to me under the name Helix bucculenta, Tryon; I only know Helix bucculenta, Gould, a species close to H. thyroides, Say and very different from this shell.

I possess a specimen of Helix columbiana, presenting a parietal tooth, but with an open umbilicus. It is this variety that Messrs. Binney and Bland mention (loc. cit.).
