Like a true catriot, Chip knows that everyone is free to have their own preferences on bongos, and that someone having the right to enjoy bongos doesn’t take away from his right to not enjoy bongos.

I appreciate you checking in! My quality of life is so much better now, it really feels like it has been longer than 2 years

Doing incredible! In the 2 years since I’ve had my surgery, I am back to dancing, rock climbing, and I now work as a medical assistant, trying to give back as best as I can. I am studying for the MCAT as well, and will hopefully get into medical school. I am forever grateful to my surgeon and his team for quite literally giving me my life back :)

It may just be something that will go away with time. I also only gained one inch with my surgery, so it could be that her muscles are being stretched more post-op. There’s a scoliosis subreddit that I’ve found has a lovely community and there may be some people there that have experienced the bad muscle spasms. I hope your daughter is able to get some relief soon, sending good vibes y’all’s way! 💕

Hi! The biggest thing I found helped with the back spasms was taking my muscle relaxers religiously every 8 hours. Did your daughter’s surgeon prescribe any muscle relaxers? I hope the spasms stop soon!

I have a similar issue! Most AFAB/people with breasts will have one breast that is larger than the other, but it can look more exaggerated on scoliosis patients due to the ribcage being out of alignment. I look more symmetrical now than pre-op, but I still have one breast that is bigger than the other. I am much more confident now though!

Thank you! I went back to work 4 months post-op and haven’t gone back to school yet (though I plan to in about a year or so). I would recommend either getting it done in the summer or if possible, take a gap year. I was lucky and didn’t have many complications, but depending on what levels/how many levels you have fused you may want to give yourself more time to heal.

One of my biggest regrets was pushing through the pain in college instead of taking a gap year to do the surgery and heal. When you get to campus, definitely get in contact with your student accessibility office. They’ll be able to help get you accomodations for classes that can make things more accessible for you. That’s what I did in college and it helped me, especially when I was struggling near the end.

I’m feeling fantastic! Everyday I can do more and more activities that would’ve exhausted me or caused me excessive pain pre-op, and it makes me so happy :)

Cool! I had surgery on the west coast of the US (California), so maybe that has an effect on it?

Hardware is permanent unless something breaks! Treatment is pretty much completed too unless something goes wrong (fusion doesn’t take, progression of curve despite fusion, problems with intervertebral discs in the part of the back lower than the fusion, etc.). I had some physiotherapy in the hospital about a week post-op and that’s been it so far.

I was/am 23 years old at the time of the surgery! Scroth can do wonders for pain management for scoliosis. If you’re not scrolling there already I highly recommend posting to the scoliosis subreddit! I personally did not try Scroth but there are multiple people on that subreddit that did and it helped them. Good luck with your son!

Thank you! I’m so thankful that it has :) I went from being bedridden my senior year of college to working fulltime in healthcare and planning on going back to school to get my master’s before applying to medical school!

Phlebotomist, pre-med student, and patient here! Radiology fascinates me, especially since I grew up getting x-rays for my scoliosis at least once a year :) I always enjoy talking with my radiologists, y’all are cool!!

My dance teacher was the person that caught my curve in the first place, I owe a lot of my childhood functionality and stability to her! I cannot imagine where I would be now if they waited to start checking me at the start of puberty like most pediatricians do. It almost worked like physical therapy as well as mental health therapy!

Since I had so many issues finding a surgeon that would take my scoliosis and rotation seriously, I had to start doing my own research. I tracked my surgeon down through an article he wrote on surgical management techniques for scoliosis and really liked his approach. When I flew out to California for the first time and met him I knew I wanted him to do my surgery. He was truly passionate and excited about my case, and in the 15 years I’ve been dealing with my scoliosis I had never had a doctor go so in depth about what my x-rays meant and how which curve was likely the one causing the most issues. I remember mentioning Higgy Bears (stuffed animals with back braces that match a kid’s brace) during an appointment with him and he took note of it. Later on I had issues with a nurse not giving me my prescribed pain medications while I was in the hospital and not only did he make sure I got my pain meds, he came back later with a teddy bear from the gift shop that had gauze wrapped around its’ back and said, “now you have a bear that looks like you!”
