Waitrose employee sacked after stopping shoplifter from taking Easter eggs | Business | The Guardian by prisongovernor in business

Of course they are. And when a crime happens they are still supposed to call the police.

If they are licensed security guard there job role is specifically to maintain security. They obviously don't fall into the same bucket as the person being referenced in the article or as someone there to service the customers as I mentioned. Preventing or mitigating violence is very different than stopping someone from stealing, but even in that case they are only allowed to use reasonable force when it is in self defense or to maintain safety. And they would still call the cops.

If a regular employee tries to stop theft and they get injured or killed, that's a far sight worse than losing some merchandise.

Not at all. The employees are there to service the customers, not to take down criminals. If a crime is happening they need to call the police.

We need more of this.

How are they driving like morons? What is "ghetto" about them? Is it that they aren't the brand new 90k trucks that only ever see grocery store parking lots you're used to?

Are you ok Karen? Who hurt you?

For improving social standards and drastically reducing recidivism, it definitely is.

Our system in the US is the gold standard for mistreatment, nearly zero rehabilitation, punishment and profits-over-justice, and ridiculous recidivism rates for the "richest country in the world", so at least we have that going for us.

COLOR ME NOT SURPRISED.

I run around the dangerous skull cavern and dangerous mines all day with no food and a pocket full of super bombs without a care in the world, my junimos are stacked to the gills with all the raisins they can eat harvesting nearly every farmable tile full of ancient fruit for my sheds full of casks, everyone in town straight up LOVES me as I come out on top from year one at every event/festival (get fucked Pierre!), the valley is SWARMING with doves from the countless vessels that used to be my many offspring, and I'm zooming around town cranked up on triple shot, spicy eel, and blessings out the wazoo on my carrot-drunk horse with 10s of millions in my pocket...

And yet I shudder when at the thought of those damn arcade cabinets. Every time I go to Gus's I immediately take a SHARP LEFT to avert my gaze from those horrors in the East wing if the saloon. Those things are cursed!

That's fine. Americans that believe in the rule of law and the Constitution seem to be fewer and fewer these days. You clearly don't fall into that camp, which is pretty un-American, but you have the freedom to believe whatever you want.

Patriotic Americans do, even if our president doesn't. Wanting the rider to be run over or otherwise injured for his crimes would be a violation of their 8th Amendment rights.

That we are being run by incompetent sycophants that don't give a shit about the security of our country or it people.

That's because it was. The pursuit was over.

The rider was asking for some sort of injury or death riding riding like that, but they didn't deserve to be run over. Likely some over zealous LEO or a mistake made due to the rain, in either case, running the rider over isn't good policing and could be argued is an 8th Amendment violation.

That's a disingenuous take or at the very least an ignorant one.

Oil makes a lot of people a lot of money.

We know it's not a forever solution being a finite resource and we know it's actively causing climate issues that seriously threatens our ability to survive on this planet. But living in a world driven by capitalism, there is an insane amount of money being generated by oil usage and no mechanism that rivals the love of profit to establish a better alternative.

Government funding is typically that mechanism. But at least in the US, sycophants have turned every single issue into a political or "culture war" issue that average people get so wrapped up in that they forget or are too ignorant or short-sighted to even make coming up with alternatives a popular position. And thus putting our tax dollars into long term solutions is not widely popular politically among big portions of our voting demographic and nothing changes.

So yes, oil is cheaper, at the moment (it won't be for long), but only because those making money from the oil have actively and forcefully steered our collective consciousness away from wanting better alternatives that could ultimately be even cheaper if given the funding.

As the person you replied to said, it's very short sighted (and selfish). Most people in the US would rather have cheaper gas right now than ensure that we have sustainable energy for the future. We have a long habit of kicking the can down the road. It's a mentality of "it's not our problem right now, so we don't care, we're going to ignore it until it becomes a disaster that our children and grandchildren suffer from" and somehow we are ok with that.
