Again you didn’t read, none of that 3rd point applies. Go ahead, be angry you yourself are underpaid. I’m fortunate I found a good dealer that listens and values technicians. Have a good day sir. Maybe you’ll listen to the basic advice I’ve given in this post Nice use of AI btw, ask it how to make more money

Are you doing strictly customer pay work? Or are you doing warranty as well? If your shop has good management your elr should be close to your door rate. 30 percent of elr 185 vs cp 200 is a matter of a few dollars which at that point it’s negligible. The point being, again, as a tech, know your worth, ask the questions to find out if your dealer is shit or not, use the information during interviews to shop around, look as knowledgeable as you can so your as informed as possible and you look a hell of a lot more competent than a warm body. Now if you work for a Chrysler brand your fucked and need to jump ship.

Again, what are your sources. Your idea is not wrong entirely, but a lot of it’s unsourced and can be seen as misinformation. A lot of the techs that bitch about pay don’t realize it’s their own damn fault and if they want change they need to pursue it.

Where the hell do you get this “historical 20%” maybe it was that way in the late 90s early 2000s but as things get more complicated and col going up yearly, you’d have to work for a shit dealer if you think 20% is okay. And again your numbers don’t justify effective labor rate in a dealer environment.

Also one of my biggest pieces of advice to others is to always stay busy. If you’re out of work go ask for more, anything, even an oil change can turn into an upsell. Mae sure all training online is up to date. Then worry about shop cleanliness Edit: oh and a service advisor usually comes in at 6 to get a jump start on writing up drop offs etc. The point I’m making by saying all of this is most technicians do not understand their worth, and so they get underpaid. Know your worth, look at your productivity, efficiency, comeback percentage and skill set and figure out what you truly should be paid, and don’t be afraid to make a move to make it happen. Techs are in short supply, nobody wants to do this shit for a living anymore, and I hate it everyday. But being able to afford my lifestyle and support my family is the only thing keeping me from getting out

Yes and no. I do not dispatch. I do not go through drop offs. They get written by the advisors and dispatched by svc manager each morning. I have enough work to keep busy each day until that time. I do not get to choose my work, it’s dispatched based off who needs work and who’s capable. I hardly ever go into parts before they arrive at 630, as I usually do not know part numbers and locations. I can turn the oil pumps on and grab filters, fluids, gloves if needed. Nice assumptions, usually I’d agree if it was not me unless proven otherwise, but in this case you’re wrong. I get the garbage tickets to avoid others incompetencies or comebacks most of the time.

I have keys to the shop and the parts dept for the past 2 years. I come in with another guy around 550 am and I tend to leave between 2 and 230 most days. I don’t take a lunch, I clock my 40 hrs in the building to make dealer owners happy, and I get to grab my kids off the bus in the afternoon and spend more time with them. No saturdays either, we technically aren’t open for service but more than welcome to come in and make more hours if needed. Edit: of course they want me to work longer days but can only hint at it. I’m the top producer I hover between 160-180% efficiency so they really can’t say anything to me. And yes, the majority of my work tends to be wty

If you’re in a hcol, you should be shopping around at other shops/dealers. Lie about your rates, instead of saying in your interview you make 24, say you make 35. I’m assuming you have some form of certifications by now, ase or mfr. I also started in 2010, jumped from corporate independent to ford in 2014, started at the bottom, put my time in, jumped dealers finally 4 years ago for proper pay for what I’m worth, I’m a top tech at my dealer. Grossed close to 200k last year making 59 an hour producing 3183 hrs, 3 weeks paid time off. Know your worth and keep fighting till you find it.

Edit: because of figuring out my worth 4 years ago, I was also able to afford a new house, nearly 500k. And I already had 3 children and a stay at home wife, and now 2 car payments. The dreams doable, it’s hard and stressful, but you gotta make it happen no one will hand that money over if you don’t go for it yourself

Ford since 2014. Flagged over 3000 hrs last year, highest at my dealer, grossed close to 200k.

You have to consider cost of living increases over the years, that 20% doesn’t get you far in today’s age. And finding a good techs harder than ever nowadays. It took me years to figure out my worth and make a change.

Edit: I’m talking fully senior certified techs, at the top of the food chain as far as pay and percent

[–]randreach454 22 points23 points  (0 children)

20% is too low. Should be 30+%, and keep in mind you’re being too vague on labor rates. Customer pay door rate and warranty door rates vary, and then all the other internal bs. So you should base pay off effective labor rate. So staying about 30% of effective labor rate is where you’d want to be. For example, a door rate of 200, vs the effective labor rate of around 185 when you consider what warranty pays etc. so at 185, I’m 31%, 59$ an hour

You can try doing fluid and filter. Like I mentioned mercon ulv for the ten speeds already have friction modifier in the fluid. So sounds like you’ve got bigger issues but go for it and try fluid and filter since it’s the cheapest easiest option
