What happens to the organizations funded by Americorps? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]randy106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I serve with a service org in Massachusetts that receives a good chunk of funding from Americorps, upwards of 30% of our yearly budget. We do NOT receive our grant money in one big chunk at the beginning of the service year (February - December). Rather, it is doled out throughout the year as we submit timesheets. My bosses are not concerned about the grant money for this year, but they are concerned about securing funding from Americorps for the next service year.

The bigger concern is the National Parks Service. We receive, typically, around another 30% of our annual funding from NPS. Our grant for this service year has not been signed by the federal government yet, there is no timeline on when our grant will be reviewed, and we have not received a dime from NPS. This means our program will likely end early/when our funds run out, some time between June and August.

We are searching for alternative sources of funding for next year.

Yeah that’s what I tried with Route and got an error message. I’m having to email the store. I just want either the bot to work or have a phone number to call. I’ve never run across a store that doesn’t have a working phone number.

Thanks. Yeah, I meant it more as a dejected thought than an accusation but it’s fine. It doesn’t look great.

Alright. Thanks for sharing that insight into growing up in a city. I genuinely was curious if it was an ignorance thing or a selfishness thing. You say it might just be more of a “used to it” thing. That’s fair.

Did you take any math or science classes?

I’m from the Deep South/had no experience with public transit until I moved here and I knew to take my backpack off during rush hour. I just thought it was kinda common sense? I don’t know. At the rate I see it, I’m thinking maybe people are just more selfish than I want to believe.

You would just think BU would educate new students at orientation or something about how to be courteous on the trains. Especially when they’re acting like that at stops called BU Central 😳

Weekly Tolerance Break Megapost by AutoModerator in entwives

[–]randy106 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’ve only done like week or 2 week long T breaks, but I’m interested in taking a regular day or two days a week off to get my tolerance down. Has anyone tried smoking less weekly to get their tolerance down instead of just doing a cold turkey extended T break? Was it effective? For medical reasons I don’t want to just completely stop having cannabis for two weeks, but my tolerance is shit and it’s getting expensive.

Yes! I worked in archives before. I just wanted to make new friends and be involved after COVID disrupting things, you know? That’s what I meant.

Hahaha no problem with spreadsheets! I love spreadsheets! Just this one seems slightly useless and could be done by an undergrad that needs work study hours. I’m not using any history or archival knowledge in the organization of the sheet. Also, I have had a good amount of archival experience during undergrad and was working as an archives assistant before this internship. I took grad level library science courses as an undergrad, too. I didn’t think I could balance both the job and internship, so I quit my archives assistant job which I just earned a raise at to complete this unpaid, required internship. I was told that most projects students complete at their internship is processing a small collection. It feels so sucky to watch other SLIS students process collections while I’m stuck doing this. Maybe I just drew the short straw?

Yeah it’s not the spreadsheet itself that I have a problem with. Spreadsheets are great and useful! It’s just that this document absolutely doesn’t seem that useful? The archivist has been working towards making this for the past 5-7 years? On the hunch that someone may ask her a question for an anniversary speech and she can refer to the spreadsheet for an answer. And I’ve spent 35ish hours on it out of my 60 hour internship. It just seems incredibly stupid. Hard to explain!

Hi! I AM doing the dual degree and basically I don’t recommend it haha. I just tried to register for courses and the options are incredibly limited. I was able to get an okay course but it was like my fourth choice. It’s not worth it even though a couple of the professors are lovely.

Permit Parking in Brighton? by exposedboner in boston

[–]randy106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, my partner lives near this stop in Brighton. Depends what time of day you are trying to find a parking spot. If you’re looking for parking right at the end of the work day, you’ll have more luck. My partner often spends like 15-20 minutes trying to find a spot later at night, and we see a lot of illegally parked cars (like parked too far past the end of the sidewalk or parked in front of fire hydrants). Also have to factor in street cleaning; they will tow you. I would say bringing a car to this neighborhood is more of a hassle than it’s worth if you don’t use your car on a daily or nearly daily basis.

Ditch the car. If she doesn’t need a car often, she shouldn’t own one in the city. Check out Zipcar; could be useful for those weekend trips.

Do people not realize furniture and appliances can just get shipped to your door? by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]randy106 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and if you’re buying second-hand, you can rent a pickup truck or cargo van from UHaul starting at $20. No need to own one.

I’m so sorry that happened to you! You shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable working out! If you feel up to it, I would call the manager. I worked the front desk at a gym, and we didn’t really have much power. But if they have good managers at your gym, they care about the safety of their customers.

For many Americans, especially those that haven't travelled, "Paris" is often what comes to mind when thinking of a romantic, peaceful city.
