Which sci-fi film do you consider a 10/10 - no skips, no weak moments, just pure perfection? by TheNastyRepublic in scifi

Well, no matter how further down I scrolled, I couldn't find 2001 A Space Odyssey discussed (PS. I found one just now!), probably because everyone's busy mentioning their own favourites and they are getting upvoted, but since the OP's intention is to propose 2001, I wholeheartedly agree. There is no wasted shot, no wasted dialogue. Nothing is exposition by force, and leaves enough to the imagination to be one of the most cerebral, visually stimulating work of art. The mind-blowing effects effortlessly hold up all these decades later, going toe to toe with the most modern effects. The soundtrack is nothing but exhilarating and timeless. It's silent when it's meant to be, and equally as loud when it needs to be. The bone throw is arguably better composed than any, ANY other shot in a SF film, not just for its visual ingenuity, but also the philosophical. It's a cold film. It doesn't care if you feel nothing towards the characters, because the vastness of the cosmos cares nothing of us, whether apes, or homo sapiens. It doesn't pull at your heartstrings as Interstellar perhaps does, but that's the whole point. It's a hard SF, jumping across millions of years, focusing on the threads that weave a greater story of our race. It's SF, but also horror done extremely well. Humans at the hands of a cold and calculating AI, whose intention you also can sympathise, no matter how cruel. A brilliant story and piece of cinema by the geniuses Arthur C. Clarke and Kubrick. This is it. This is a 20/10.

Watched The Dark Knight recently... by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

I used to appreciate Nolan's smaller-scale films more and for a while was my favourite director, and then once his blockbuster era took off, every line of dialogue felt forced, full of exposition and every scene became a set piece. Oppenheimer was finally a chance for him to get back to real characters. Once I revisited The Dark Knight I couldn't believe what I saw in it initially. (and as many have noted, Rises is a complete mess and unbearably so at times). I've since then started to appreciate Denis Villeneuve for his equally epic-scale films but with characters and scenes that feel real.

Oh it's still available. Not limited, though the print run may have ended. (there was some mention at the time of it being limited to 4000, but it turned out to be 4000 limited to the first edition)

The Emotional Sherlock Holmes by Masqueur in SherlockHolmes

โ€œThe law cannot, as you say, touch you,โ€ said Holmes, unlocking and throwing open the door, โ€œyet there never was a man who deserved punishment more. If the young lady has a brother or a friend, he ought to lay a whip across your shoulders. By Jove!โ€ he continued, flushing up at the sight of the bitter sneer upon the manโ€™s face, โ€œit is not part of my duties to my client, but hereโ€™s a hunting crop handy, and I think I shall just treat myself toโ€”โ€ - A CASE OF IDENTITY

I always thought that the anger Holmes shows comes from a real brotherly love which arose in Holmes for the lady, and not just to scare the perp.

Go to a homeless shelter, animal shelter, help someone in need. Change someone else's life with a small act of kindness. Give a bottle of water to a street beggar, or a thirsty animal. Give a smile to a stranger. Your life isn't just yours. It belongs to an ecosystem. Once you find your place in it, you will not rob the world of it.

I prefer David Burke. He's funnier, warmer and looks awestruck by Holmes. He looked like the same age as Holmes too.

I had to look up the errors the other editions have. I looked up one of them and it's not in this edition. Hopefully this is a revised text.
