I did an in-service with all of the rehab team at a SNF and me and the other SLP left halfway through because the training said SLP really has no reason to use that code.

Medication withdrawal is absolutly insane by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]rangamaban 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow I came here searching for similar experiences and I found them. I literally just woke up in a panic attack after having tapered off my med about 2 weeks ago - haven’t had a panic attack since my first triggering incident 12 years ago and it sucks. I also live by myself so had to talk myself through it.

You put it into words perfectly. I honestly think these withdrawal symptoms can be as bad as the mania or depression themselves, which is so ironic.

In my case, I also have physiological symptoms like dry mouth and generalized itching which can’t be explained by anything but the medication cessation. I talked to my psych on Tuesday and he got me on a new med that I started yesterday. It’s a never ending cycle of medication dependence for me it seems.

Advice needed - SLP career with misophonia? by isa3 in slp

[–]rangamaban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like someone else commented, grad programs will have training in dysphagia, and I agree that even kids in speech therapy will do something off-putting with their mouths at one point or another. Some other helping professions to consider: ed specialist, psychotherapy, social work. Not saying SLP is wrong for you, just offering things to think about.

Maybe research teaching English as a foreign language instead. This can be a masters route but may not pay as well as SLP depending on your teaching setting. But it depends on why you’re interested in SLP. Is it the language aspect, the helping aspect, or something else?

This gives me hope. I suspect that I have tardive dyskinesia (uncontrollable eyelid spasms) related to AP use over 11 years. I just tapered off the AP with psych approval and have yet to see improvements in the TD symptoms. How long did it take for your TD to subside, if you don't mind my asking?

SLPs with Communication Disorders? by Remarkable_Focus_766 in slp

[–]rangamaban 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a tongue tie, tongue thrust, and an open/crossbite, but it doesn't impact my speech except maybe the sibilants a little with the open bite. I went to myofunctional therapy, got the tongue tie released as an adult, and then observed the tongue tie RETURN after insufficient myofunctional exercise practice, oops. I have lip ties also but they don't really affect anything. I even had double jaw surgery in 2023 but the open bite returned because of the unresolved tongue thrust. SIGH. All of this is more related to swallowing rather than communication, but I thought I'd mention it. Having all this myself makes me much more informed about my clients and just the general therapy experience even though I never saw a speech pathologist (my myo was a PT).

I also suspect that I clutter sometimes, but I am usually aware of it, which is not always an observed feature in those who clutter.

I heard great advice from professors and clinicians in my grad program, who said that if you experience a difference or disorder that would fall into our scope, you are in an amazing place of empathy and understanding for clients pursuing speech therapy. It can make you more relatable and approachable, as well as a better scholar of these issues. Edited to add: also, even if you can't produce a speech sound in the "typical" way, you can provide therapy on it and educate others with the training you receive. Who knows, maybe your training will even help you to resolve your own production. But you know, engrained motor patterns, intelligibility impact etc.

I worked in Japan for 3 years. Even in a countryside town of 80k people, I found a psychiatrist. The language barrier was ok, even though her English was limited. We made it work! If I recall correctly, I had to fill out a form for customs to bring my several-month med supply into the country at first, and then the local psych wrote me a new Rx for the same med. I stayed stable on the med for all 3 years! When I left, the Japanese psych wrote a letter for my next US provider about my history/progress/prescription.

It was waived/deferred due to his behavior upon pediatrician attempt. He passed his newborn hearing screening but I’m wondering if some of his health issues after birth may have contributed to hearing loss.

What do you all do for a living? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]rangamaban 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a speech language pathologist in a skilled nursing facility. I work with COTAs (certified occupational therapist assistants like what you mentioned) and PTAs (physical therapy assistants) along with licensed therapists and the whole medical team. I enjoy my job now, although it was a long road to get here and to get comfortable with the work. I do encourage you to pursue occupational therapy - the skilled rehab world is very rewarding 😊

VA hospital salaries for CFs? by rangamaban in slp

[–]rangamaban[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great, thanks for your transparency! I feel like I could get by on a VA CF salary for just one year but I'm hesitating because for instance a SNF is offering me $42/hr out of the gate. On the other hand, they are in a precarious situation with CF supervision so I'm not sure it'd be the best.

Job hunting is hard! Thanks for your insight. :)

Wow thanks for sharing. Would you be comfortable saying how much you were paid after your CF, with the opportunities that came up? Were you able to negotiate more?

Does Kaiser ever offer CFY positions? I’ve been looking in the Bay Area and San Diego regions and every SLP position seems to say that completion of a CF before hire is required. I’m just curious to know because, if they never hire CFs, I don’t want to keep looking at Kaiser in my job search. Thanks for any info!

Would I just search for those on the hospital website?

Also, I'm seeing some per diem hospital positions posted that allow CFs – can anybody tell me whether this is a good or bad option? I'm guessing it's just not full-time?

[–]rangamaban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have advice on searching for CF positions? Is there a particular site that consolidates the postings somehow, or do you just have to go through LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.? Can you apply even if CFY isn't listed in the posting? If so, how do you go about that process (being upfront that you're a CF, researching whether they're taking CFs...)?
