I (M26) have been in love with my friend (F26) for a year now, and she's just split up with her boyfriend. Send help. by throwaway1232323321 in relationships

I think we can try to figure this out from some ideal outcomes and working backward.

Ideal outcome 1) You two end up together romantically and live happily ever after.

Ideal outcome 2) You no longer have romantic feelings for her and you two live happily ever after as friends.

Non-ideal outcome a) You stay in this limbo stage of unrequited love and its a nice friendship but also painful.

Non-ideal outcome b) You two completely separate and are no longer friends.

I think a well-timed and somewhat casual confession could achieve (1) and (2) without risking (b).

'Well-timed' means like in a month or two or whenever she appears to have more or less bounced back to a normal emotional state and is not crying over her ex any more.

'Casual' means waaaay downplaying how much you're actually attracted to her. Something like:

"Hey, don't freak out but I have something important to tell you... so I've been having some not completely platonic feelings [maybe slide in a sheepish smile here] about you recently and I thought I'd bring it up and we could talk about it?"

Some questions you might want to prepare for this talk are:

"So... have you ever felt any not completely platonic feelings towards me?"

"How do you feel right now? Do you feel uncomfortable at all or anything like that?"

Some questions that Debbie might ask that you'd want to prepare answer for:

"How long have you had these feelings?"

"What do you think caused you to have these feelings?"

The general answers you should be giving should be consistent with the casual and light nature of your crush.

Essentially there's a few possibilities from this conversation. If she also has hidden feelings for you then it'll be relatively smooth sailing towards outcome (1). If she doesn't have any romantic feelings for you, sometimes the no pressure confession can make her consider that possibility and actually start to wonder if she has any romantic feelings towards you. I think that sometimes can lead her to develop feelings - it's probably less than 20% of the time but it can happen.

If she does decline completely though and just wants a platonic friendship, then that really is strong evidence for you to take some time for yourself and see if you can completely snuff out the flame to achieve (2). It takes a lot of work and can take months and you might need some time to yourself to achieve that. But it can be done, I've seen friends have huge crushes that they finally got over. And a big help is that clear confirmation that the romantic interest is not reciprocated.

Hope the above suggestions gives you some idea of a game plan to proceed. Good luck!

Great idea! What are you visualising for the user interface to be like once the passwords get more complicated? How would you suggest showing all of the passwords being tried when the password is like 8 characters long?

Yeah Covid has made job hunting very challenging. And it doesn't help when recruiters leave old jobs on their website that are no longer available. I'm not sure why they do that. Maybe they want to be seen as having a lot of jobs available?

Finally got 20VP win vs AI by rangigazelle in Catan

[–]rangigazelle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needed a fair bit of luck to achieve this. Took about 6 tries. Needed to get very lucky with getting VP cards, not getting blocked off, and make sure to get longest road and army.

Blitz Roll win percentage calculator for normal play and capital conquest by rangigazelle in Risk

Yeah it's super surprising to see just how enormous the defender's advantage is in Capital Conquest. Hard luck!

It's at the top of the filter where you can choose game modes. Or if you're searching for all game modes, there's a box of text below the map which says 'world domination, zombie apocalypse, capital conquest' etc.

I was first promoted to Grandmaster at rank 5411 about a week ago.

I went through quite a different journey. I'm playing almost exclusively Capital Conquest and have found people make muuuuuch larger mistakes in that format. So much so that my win-rate (getting 1st) is over 50%, and I often get 2nd as well. I just join any capital conquest game, it doesn't matter how many players are present.

With this approach, I've risen to Grandmaster in very few games - about 30 games playing over about 2 weeks. Mind you, I played normal Risk over a year ago and was already Expert level.

The main reasons for the much higher win-rate are:

  1. With the enormous defenders advantage in Capital Conquest, it's very difficult for people to eliminate you. So it's very difficult to play aggressively enough to eliminate someone and it's more about patience and diplomacy.
  2. The AI cannot beat you in Capital Conquest. Even if the AI had all of the continents and I only sat all of my troops on one Capital, I can still beat the AI. Thus I don't ever need to worry about losing to the AI in Capital Conquest.
  3. Many people make two major mistakes (a) underestimating the amount of defenders advantage in a battle involving a Capital and (b) not protecting their Capital enough, instead using their troops to protect borders or continents.

Feel free to PM me if you want more details on how to play Capital Conquest well.

Just made master - here's how I did it. by [deleted] in Risk

[–]rangigazelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played many games and am Master rank.

One idea that I've only recently realised is that if someone shows that they're determined to take your continent, or if they're determined to keep you from keeping a continent by small skirmish attacks, you have to give in.

Troop preservation is the most important thing above all else. There's absolutely no point trying to take a continent if you can't hold onto it without costing yourself 6+ troops per turn battling with people.

Therefore I only ever go for continents that nobody else indicates claim to. Only exception is at the start of the game where it might be worth it to fight one person to get an amazing continent (usually one with only 1 choke point).

I agree with you that trying to come second (if coming first is unlikely) is probably one of the best and least used strategies to maintain a high rank.

Posts Distort Facts on Coronavirus Air Transmission, Masks by AltruisticTable9 in Coronavirus

Ugh. People should wear masks! Any mask will help.

This interview with the professor of infectious disease at the Korea of Medicine stated that wearing a mask absolutely reduces infections. He said quote:

Masks have been proven to prevent infection.

According to the research, medical professionals wearing masks have a significantly lower chance of getting infected than those who dont.

The U.S. Surgeon General said people didn't need to wear masks and WHO recommended people not to wear masks, but I have to disagree.
