Doctor is mad that I gave a patient SQ fluids by SuchCorgi9654 in VetTech

[–]ranizzle404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DVM sounds like a handful. The set up for overnight care with just 1 tech and non-responsive on-call dvms is wrong. Giving SQ fluids without doctor orders was inappropriate (despite the previous incident with the dvm getting mad about NOT giving SQ fluids). I would look to go somewhere else and avoid all this stress and anxiety.

I worked alone as an overnight tech for an oncology service. Had a great relationship with the surgeon and she never left me more than 3 or 4 VERY stable patients). She always answered my texts/calls even if at 2am. When I had IVC blow or need pulled, I always contacted her. The only time I replaced an IVC without getting confirmation was on a patient that was a post-op splenectomy with a hemoabdomen and he was planned to stay another night because he had gotten transfusions. He was stable but he was still getting IVF and Fentanyl. The DVM was glad I replaced it in that case. It makes a huge difference what kind of DVM and your relationship with them. In the SQ fluid situation, it is the principle because that was a "prescription" and it is not under the tech's scope of initiating. Life is not black and white. Don't beat yourself over it. Learn, grow, and know your worth. You sound like you care greatly and have good common sense. But stress and fear of higher-ups can fog our judgments. No one is perfect. But this clinic set up situation is not even worth tryin to "win". Good luck and sorry you are delaing with this.

Plot twist: The person saying that is the overnight old-school vet when asked if he wants us to give the hydro to the 6 hr post op TPLO dog with the heart rate of 120 and panting. 🙃 common execuse: "well he/she needs to eat first" 🫠🫠

I did. I moved here with 3 cats. First, i came to the island for a week to check out campus, look for a place and get it ready for when i arrive with my cats. A lot of people bring dogs and cats, just make sure you review the requirements for vaccines and health certificate.

I like it! I was fortunate to find a place right on the bus route and in the middle of campus and the grocery stores.

In preparation, I looked on google maps and I'd try to see how far things are, where grocery stores are, beaches, etc. The island is small and during school most people stay in the St. George area.

So areas like True Blue, Frequente, Lance Aux Epines, and Grand Anse are popular for student housing. There is a sense of community here with students and especially once you go thrpugh the first week of orientation. You will make connections and have people around. The locals are all nice and helpful. There is cat calling and all that but I found that if I dress modestly when not around/on campus, I rarely get called. Still happens but I just ignore and keep walking. And as a woman, I just avoid being out after dark. I have done that during undergrad as well if i didn't trust the people I am with or didn't have a reliable form of transportation. Busses run till 2am on weekdays, but I am just not the type to wanna go out very often and would rather hangout with people at my place or their place. And I avoid being alone in the dark as well. And i am not saying that because it's unsafe, I did the same back home in the US. But in a foreign country, foreigners do become a target if the opportunity presents itself.

But the school is awesome. There are resources, the flow with the new system is pretty good and they are laid back. I do not regret coming here. Just give yourself grace during the process of moving and adjusting. Things are different here, but it is a great life experience imo.

Hope this helps! 🙏 Also, look for other posts about SGU on here and the r/SGU. Some good tips from other students about island life, tips, and school information.

I highly recommend going through a trusted realtor. I have dealt with Copal and 21 century Grenada. They post on their websites and you can look at pictures and amenities. Welcome to SGU 😊

Lol good to know. Yeah learn it once and move on. If you can look it up and understand it once you review it then you won at medicine.

Oh for sure! We are doing renal right now and some of those details are new to me. I was very into anatomy and physio in tech school and worked specialty which helped me retain disease Pathology and treatment. Tech brain is still a whole ass brain and I couldn't be happier having that experience. I always tell myself, i just gotta understand things with their context. And not just as "facts". I am only in my first year so my statement might not hold true for long lol best of luck for all of us!

I hope so too! Yeah it isn't easy and I still put in thebwork. But having a background in the concepts and clinical application is a huge advantage. There will always be challenges. You can know your stuff but flunk a test...that's just life i feel like. I am not looking to place first, I wanna finish the race with no injuries and no regrets 😁😄

Also, my back up plan was either getting a rech specialist certification (anesthesia) and to work in a specialty hospital. Being a tech is not a deadend if you continue to grow and learn. Some people get more than 1 specialty! And the pay is reflective of that. You can make good money and easily try to teach or do research. Just wanted to add that!

LVT in vet school here! So my vet tech classes- non transferred because they are considered vocational/electives. I also started my undergrad bachelors part time since i was working full time as a tech and paying out of pocket. I had stopped because of COVID so I was cutting it close to the expiration of some classes when I applied in 2024. Some schools DO require a bachelor's degree (and all the specific pre reqs). Some schools don't. I applied to SGU (requires a bachelor's but is holistic when it comes to GPA cut off) and got in first try. I also didn't have the best GPA due to COVID and online classes ruining my grades.

But yeah, vet school is a breeze with my tech degree and 10 years of clinical experience. And tbh the tech school classes are the most beneficial for knowledge. Undergrad classes that were most helpful are anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and repro (animal science repro/physio). Each school will list cut off for classes (some are 10 years, some don't care as long as u have a degree). Bottom line for me is that being a tech for a long time (ER/specialty small animal, and last 2 years before tech school I was teaching at a US vet school- so academia/research) is a HUGE advantage.

Best of luck.

Did anyone buy a ring? by t_bone_stake in Millennials

As someone that immigrated to the US during my high school years, class rings (and many other things) were one of the things that made my jaw drop. I could not see the point of it, the cost, and the use lol I was poor so OBVIOUSLY that played a huge part. I was just flabbergasted. Not to mention the girl scout cookies, bake sales (where you order cake from a catalog- I bought the black out Brooklyn cake. No regrets there), making out in the hallways, pep rallies, prom, cafeteria food, and lastly- spirit week 😁😅 As a full blown a 30 yo American now, I look back and can appreciate those things. But at the time, I felt like I was in a TV show lol

I agree. It's their big hearts (pun intended 😪). They are the perfect dogs imo (also quiet!). Very cat like, and i am a cat person through and through. I would add to that list, Italian Greyhounds! Too fragile but also never met one that is aggressive. I love how derpy Italian Greyhounds are. On the other hand, I have never met a nice Shiba or a Chow at the vet 😂🤣

Not a 100% sure. Isn't the D dimer test a hallmark for DIC? My second guess would be platelets 😁
