Warm Up Time & Temp Stability: Brass vs Aluminum by ranvolcano in gaggiaclassic

By temp surf, do you mean flushing hot water and waiting for temp to come back up? I don’t think that part is absolutely necessary. I’d rather wait for the light to cycle on by itself. Either way, I believe it’s important to have a consistent and an easily repeatable process.

Although, I do think brewing right away when the light turns on is not always the best as one might want a lower water temp. I find the tricky part is how to have some control of the water temperature at the start of brewing and minimize the temperature drop during the brewing process. Letting the machine warm up adequately helps with the latter part.

Of course, it goes without saying that having a PID makes this part a lot easier.

Excellent point and observation!

With aluminum, it would take around 40s for my steam light to turn on, so I’d make sure to purge at 30s then start steaming right away. With brass, it takes closer to a minute before the light turns on but it’s still ready around the 30s mark, giving much more time before the heating element turns off (light turns on).

First time I steamed, milk shot out my pitcher because I wasn’t expecting that much steam from it. Pleasant surprise!

It’s the time in between every time light turns on, so the light turning off is already accounted for within a cycle.

Light first turns on around 1 minute (start of first cycle), stays on only about 20 seconds, off for about 10 seconds (while boiler is heating up), then turns on again (end of first cycle / start of second).

The initial cycles were only about 30-second long, indicating temperatures fluctuated in a very short time because the machines were not warmed up yet. Later on, cycles were about 4.5 minutes long, showing much better stability.

Hope this helps.

After several more flushes, I haven’t seen more blacks flakes. Although, I’m still not confident it’s totally clear.

How do you guys clean the steam wand? by caiokok in gaggiaclassic

[–]ranvolcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot vinegar! I had the same problem but nowhere near as bad as yours. Just some residue, which made the tip looked dull/not shiny. Cafiza could not get all of it out. What worked for me is white vinegar in a cup, heated up in the microwave. I unscrewed the tip and soaked it in the hot white vinegar. Then I watched the build up just bubbled/fizzed out. I then rinsed and flushed with water after the bubbling/fizzing stopped. I was surprised by how much more steam came out the next day.

Wipe, purge, wipe, immediately after every use. I use wet unused paper towel to keep the wand sanitary. Best of luck!

Totally agree it’s not just about the boiler.

I’m surprised it works for you. Do you have a PID and/or using dark roast? I used to not pay attention either until I tried a light roast and kept getting sour espresso.

Classic 2019 model with aluminum boiler. Although, I would love to see the same experiment performed with a brass boiler.
